Training should be just as much a priority as eating and sleeping. This is why I train my body weight exercise daily, just as much as I eat and sleep.
Of course not all of my workouts are super intense but not a day goes by without some sort of mentally focused activity.

This is an amazing message. People think that "train everyday" means to go the gym and crush your PRs in grinding sets. Lately I made sure that even if I do not have time to go to the gym or energy to crush PRs, I will invest some time in doing shadow boxing, push ups, bodyweight squats and crunches in my living room. Even 20 minutes are enough if you really go at it with intention. Although not my regular program these simple bodyweight exercises are a thousand times better than nothing and helped me with recuperation,mood, concetration , sleep, energy levels and ironically to indeed crush PRs when I finally go to the gym for barbell training.

hit the nail right on the head there Ninjamonkey. Training isn't about stressing yourself to the max, or even moderately all the time. Even stretching or deep breathing is also a form of training

Hi Matt, I'm subscribed to your website's newsletter and I received an email a few weeks ago about how important it is to train to failure and muscle fatigue for muscle growth. Could you make a video expanding on this topic? I'm guessing that if I train as hard as possible, training daily wouldn't be the best idea? Unless alternating hard vs "easy" days, such as skill work, mobility, stretching? Great video here by the way and keep it up.

(RedDeltaProject) ,, haha Loved your Video...im serious seen plenty of videos, that basically say you can't train everyday due to your muscle needing rest, or injuries can occur, Etc.... really like your video cause thats exactly how I've always thought if you can train everyday why not as long as its not power lifting hitting it hard, over doing it everyday, and of course getting your 7 to 8hrs of sleep a day, and eating Healthy.....i train hard, and hit it heavy hard some days with light cardio workouts in between. Gave your Vid a Like....Thanks Man

The greatest example of training daily , with bodyweight , and heavy and intense at that -Herschel Walker. The guy is unbelievable. 1500 push ups daily , 1000 weighted squats , 1200+ pull ups - the guy is amazing. And to top it all , he is mostly a vegetarian and eats just one meal a day and fasts on others . How I so strongly wish that I could be like him. Someday , for sure.

I’m 58, I work at the post office as a mailman, lots of OT but I try and get push ups or pull-ups, variations of them in every day. For me, if I skip a day, then I may skip two. Then , I feel bad. I have a green and red marker and I mark my kitchen calendar every day; green X means I train, red means I wimped out. And it hangs in my kitchen for all to see.

Hey, Matt. This is a great video! Thanks for clarifying that idea of training daily by varying intensity and activity. And just received your "Train Your Chain" PDF, it's fantastic, thank you so much! The picture of you doing a side plank with your feet against a wall single-handedly changed my life, and, of course, the rest is absolutely brilliant. Really helpful tips for when you can't get certain phasic muscles to activate (rear delts, anybody?). A few months ago (maybe back in the summer), you made a video about elevation masks, the hype and whether or not you recommend it, and some similar videos regarding stretching modalities. It would be GREAT if you could do a similar video regarding foam rolling. Some find it very important, some think it's a waste of time. Some do it every day, pre-workout, post-workout, in the evening, in the morning, not at all... Do you do self myofascial release (i.e., foam rolling), and do you recommend it to your students? Thanks, Sensei!

Stretch once a day (minimum), do abs everyday, and do 10 minutes of cardio everyday. Strength training should follow a different set of rules depending on what you're doing. Bodybuilding: Every day, splitting body parts up. Strongman: 2-4 days of training a week. Powerlifting:... I don't know, I don't know much about powerlifting. Probably the same as Strongman. Crossfit: 3-7 times a week, dependent on what type of Crossfit training you're doing. Bodyweight: Depends. Bodyweight training can fall into any category based on how you're doing it. The heavier and more intense you go, the more rest you need. Especially if you're doing compound movements.

Great video Matt! I recently switched to shorter workouts EVERYDAY. I've been getting better results and I'm never burnt out. I was wondering if it really matters whether we do full body vs split workouts. I prefer full body but I know if I did splits, my workouts would be even shorter and more focused. Just afraid that splits might cause muscle imbalance. What do you think? Thanks.
@AllNaturalbaseball
@AllNaturalbaseball 9 жыл бұрын
I like full body workouts, but I recently switched up to an A/B workout split and I like it; I do - A: Pulling/legs, B:Pushing/Core. Then I alternate workouts throughout the week. If you do a split, you shouldn't get imbalances as long as you are giving each muscle the same attention/frequency and focusing on technique for each one. The key is the frequency, if you train a certain muscle group less per week then you would create an imbalance, so keep your split/workouts balanced.
@rickcoyote5503
@rickcoyote5503 7 жыл бұрын
That's kind of what I was doing, but just twice a week. I went to a split that covered the whole body over a 3 day period, then 1 day to rest, then just starts repeating that pattern. I do a total body mini workout 7 days a week too, first thing in the morning. Your idea about focus and intensity is what drove me to make that change, and the results have been very good. Now, this comes to you a year and a half after your comment, and I'm sure you're big as a house by now... Shine on. :)

Don’t fight it. He’s RIGHT! Biologically humans have NOT changed much since their Hunting & Gathering days. And YES Hunting & Gathering was physically demanding daily, hence it was daily “training”. Ignoring our primal biology makes US obese. Hunting at the supermarket via a car and gathering at a desk all day has decreased our physical prowess. To combat these comforts, we were designed to exercise daily to survive.

I think this video is more about staying in the mindset of a training environment and maintaining goals, than getting into the gym every day. A rest day should be programmed into the schedule intelligently, and designed to help the body recover. Aerobic recovery work or mobility training is every bit as important as those heavy days that your CNS just cannot handle all the time.

Do full body daily training, a 5 minute warm-up and a 35-40 minute workout 1 warm-up set and 1 set only. Do half of the reps per each of the 6 exercises. For example, say you can do 20 push-ups, then do only 10. When an exercise becomes too easy, add reps or a progression too it. The weekly training volume adds up. What are your thoughts about this?

Another point that really make sense in terms of evolutionary standpoint is that primal humans move constantly everyday instead of 3-4x/week 1 hr workouts like modern fitness advocates. Of course exercises all the time hourly is not practical for most modern people, hence the closest next best thing is some form of movement daily.

There are many ways you do it. one of the most popular is just with split routines. I use a 3-day split that I do 2x a week so that ends up working for each muscle group twice a week but I'm training 6 days. Then the seventh day is just a play day or doing something light.

Momentum is super important. Just modify the training to accommodate your energy level.

How much time should I train? Because in the past few weaks I do close to 2 hours trainings 3 times a week, and now I can't do them that much... But if I train 1 hour very intensive I feel I didn't do anything... So what should I do? Is it a good training if after that I don't feel my muscles that much exhausted?

Time isn't quite as important as what you do during that time. Personally, my strength workouts aren't much longer than 15-20 minutes. Fatiguing the muscle is an art and science. It takes practice to get good at doing it quickly. When you're used to working out for longer periods of time your mind naturally paces you so you can last that long. When you try and workout for a shorter time, you still pace yourself so you don't achieve as much fatigue. I'll look into it and make a video in the near future on this topic as it's pretty important. Stay tuned!

So isn't it smart to train differently. As in don't do cardio or legs everyday, maybe alternate? Or do you think it is OK to take like one day off per week and fully recover?
@RedDeltaProject
@RedDeltaProject 4 жыл бұрын
You can certainly do both, I like doing some leg strength exercises before going out for a bike ride, and sure, sometimes it's good to just take a day, but training can litterally just be some light stretching or practicing standing on one leg while you put on your socks

@@RedDeltaProject Good idea on the socks. Balance becomes more important as we age. As bones become more brittle one fall can be all it takes,,,

I just switched to every day training and came back to this video to bump my chest :) I got sick and tired of all these stupid rest day schemes and splits and what not. I TRAIN EVERY DAY NOW. FULL BODY. Frequency can beat everything. Start with just one set per exercise. After some time if you feel that you can handle even more ON A DAILY BASIS, then add more sets. But train every day. Yeah ! :)

Glad you're having fun with this idea. Also, don't forget to get a little playful with the training as well. A lot of times, training can be more detrimental when we do the same thing all the time like robots. Experiment with fun variations of your common moves and other flow activities like crawling to bring some fresh stimulation in your daily routine.

How many hours a day do you suggest for training and workouts??
@RedDeltaProject
@RedDeltaProject 6 жыл бұрын
Workouts should take as long as they need to take. no more. No less. it's more important to have a plan of what you want to accomplish and the time it takes is the time it takes. It's a much more practical approach than trying to work out for a given amount of time. The exception, of course, is if your workout goal is time specific (like how far can you run in 15 minutes) in that case it will take that allotted amount of time.

Sure thing. You can split up training or vary the intensity and fatigue to still allow for recovery even if you're working on a move or two each day.

Matt, are muscle gains with about 5 hours of sleep a day possible?
@MarkScott1
@MarkScott1 7 жыл бұрын
You need 7 - 8 hours realistically for optimum results. Sure going to struggle even performing very well at 5 hours let alone getting a decent recovery time in there.

Mark Scott i disagree. I built muscles with 5 or less hours of sleep daily. And beside strength training i was swimming every day.
