Major Payne may be a hardened war veteran trying very hard to settle back into civilian life but one thing is certain: he has a heart and he cares about his cadets like they’re his own children. Seeing that smile on Alex’s face and him saying he wants to win that trophy showed that he realized he had a support system with Major Payne all along and that he was safe.

I was born on an Army base, I grew up around these people so I knew the game. I did my best to help the others understand they weren't trying to pick on them, they were trying to train them.

I once had this supervisor at work who would punish me for the smallest mistakes all because he was miserable about his personal life. The other supervisors are hard too, but he took it too far, and eventually got fired for it. This guy here was drunk loser and he knew it, so he tried to make his stepson feel like a bigger loser by making him suck up to him. Then the major showed up and put that pathetic fool in his place, reminding him of what he truly was.

it just goes to show that respect needs to be earned,evn for elders...the problem with respect is that the young are expected to respect athorety figures,elders and even parents out the gate...but if you treat somone like crap your just giving them more reasons not to listen to you. payne showed a genuine apreciation and cared for that boy despite his attitude...that example of protecting him is what earned that respect.

My sister has a partner, she's recently divorced her husband. She has too kids, and they both love and respect my sister's new man. Nice guy, hard worker, more on my sister's wavelength. Treats the kids well, find it a little intimidating but he tries his best not to be a father, but a guardian and above all... a great friend to them. In time, he probably will be their new dad.

I always liked this movie, especially this part. The Major finally finds out where the chip on his (now) lead cadet’s shoulder came from. The interaction with the stepfather changed both Payne & Stone’s opinions of each other afterward. Glad that scene made the edit.

You can see both of them gaining insight on the other and now the young man sees not everyone is an asshole like his step father. It is one of the best scenes and is the turning point for the cadets.

@@offworlder1 it’s a bit deep than that, a child who sees their parents fail like this get the feeling that all authority figures are at worst willfully malicious or at best incompetent, it can also make them much better leaders and authority figures themselves if it doesn’t break them. @@curtrn ... just a thought, I know. Being ex-military now, after a 30 year career, what if both situations were wrong? Not only is the step father in the wrong, but so is joining the military? The sickness in society comes from accepting that the step father has a place in it. The sickness of society comes from accepting that the military has a place in it. This film, and all of its uniforms, was funded by the American military as a recruitment tool. The bias in the film is the fact that there are only two alternatives, when there are a multiple of alternatives. There are a massive number of recruited grunts in the military from one parent families. The military thrives on this ... just my 2 cents ...

An understated element of the writing and directing here is that Major Payne, after effortless diffusing the situation without throwing a single punch, immediately starts following behind Alex's loser of a step-father. This is never stated, but I always took that as his intention was also make sure the drunk idiot was properly handled by authorities and doesn't get back the wheel of his car.

An understated thing about this is the look Major is giving the stepfather throughout. Seeing a guardian hitting the person legally under their care would make a lot of mens blood boil. Yet the look Major is giving is one of pity. He realizes how pathetic the situation and display are and is doing his best to not make it worse while not allowing any more harm to come to his student.

One of my sisters had a paper route back in the early 80s; and on her route, one her customers had a nasty dog. It was vicious and smart; it would lie in ambush and had people up and down the street scared. One day my sister came home crying, because the dog wouldn't let her near the house. Dad took her and our younger sister to the house, rolled up the paper into a tight baton and waited for the dog. It came charging at Dad and he smacked it across the face, causing it to run off yelping. The owner came out ready to lay into Dad; but the former Marine DI came out and told him if that fucking dog ever came near his daughter again, he would come back and kill it. The dog was never seen again.

Been a drill sergeant in my time, too! 40 years ago now! A good military superior has the back of his cadets and enough confidence to take a stand for them! The first weeks of basic training it may look like you hate every one of them, but in the end they find out it was a good thing how you treated them! "Surviving" this teaches you that you can do much better than you ever thought! Something parents should have taught their children in the first place!

The nicest, sweetest people play the best villains' and bad guys. As it gives the actors a chance to explore a side of them and bring out the best of the role. I mean when you have a actor play a villian role so good that you forget that it is just a show then you know that they are good at what they do. Ron Pearlman is known for a lot of his well i would say not nice roles as both in human and creature make up. In the 1980s there was a show called Beauty and the Beast and Ron played Vincent who was deformed and looked like a cat, but was real sweet and caring but would go feral when those he loved were in danger.

It lets people touch on their darker nature without anyone hurt, and get paid to do so. This was one of, if not *the* best scene in this whole movie. We got to see that for as hard as Payne had been on the Cadets, he cared too. He never had been a family man, the military was most of what he knew, he didn't know how to deal with kids. Yet, he never once harbored any ill will toward them, never wanted to see them hurt. Given what he was there for, he wanted them to be the best they could, he was just trying to go about it in the only way he knew how. In that one moment he showed the Cadets, and even Alex above all, that even though getting off on the wrong foot and butting heads several times, he was there for them.

Never fight a drunk, let them fight themselves just like Major did. I remember when I was younger, and my then step-dad would always drink. One day, he was acting especially stupid. My grandpa told him, "I'm tired of your crap." So the drunk wanted to fight him. "Let's take this outside!" He tells my grandpa. "Alright, let's go." The drunk walked outside first, and my gramps slammed the front door and locked it and said one word... "dumbass."

Love this scene but I think it would’ve worked better if after “Major Payne, Sir”, he would’ve stood there for a moment and then saluted. No further dialogue needed. Would’ve been perfect

I see your point, but there's more to the scene than the confrontation between father, son and Major Payne. I like the scene the way it is for a couple of reasons; first, Alex now has a sense of direction and sets a goal to aim for; second, the salute that shows the respect he now has for Major Payne; and third, it brings the whole group together as a team to work towards a common goal.

Give a man some civility, some sense of self, is the greatest thing you can do for them. Too much of the world tries to take it from people, that giving it back is a very powerful thing. This moment in an otherwise silly comedy, elevated this film to a new level. A very powerful lesson in life too: respect given is respect earned in return. Major Payne was never disrespectful to the man despite the man deserving no respect. Even as Major Payne stood in his way and told him to leave. Because respect is a display of character in the giver, not of the recipient. I now feel an urge to order this on BluRay.
