@hoilst9 жыл бұрын
+SolarDragon007 I mean this is the perfect tone for Casino Royale, and I don't think there's a Bond film with a more perfect theme song (let's be honest - most of them were downright awkward). This is Daniel Craig, in a Saville Row suit, no tie, with his own blood on a Jermyn St. shirt, head down, breathing heavy but controlled, as he leaves the body of the guard whose windpipe he just crush slumped in the gutter outside the six-star hotel. Craig, chin down, eyes forward, striding purposefully through a sea of billionaires and their glittery trophy wives in the hotel lobby, ignoring their shocked stares and gasps, as he walks straight up to his target, and, in one smooth, fluid motion, with no wasted movement, pulls his Walther at the same as he grabs the target's head, slams it once into the bar, then spins and faces down the hotel security, unblinking...

I respect the direction of the older films and their themes, but I completely agree with this statement. I think this theme and this movie as a whole is what I would consider to be a 99% perfect James Bond experience. Of course my view is somewhat skewed due to Daniel Craig being the Bond I've grown up with (although I never showed any interest in the films until I had seen Skyfall, so Casino Royale has no nostalgic significance to me at all).

Lyrics: If you take a life do you know what you'll give? Odds are you won't like what it is When the storm arrives would you be seen with me By the merciless eyes of deceit? I've seen angels fall from blinding heights But you yourself are nothing so divine Just next in line Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you Are you willing to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins You know my name If you come inside things will not be the same When you return to the night And if you think you've won you never saw me change The game that we've all been playing I've seen diamonds cut through harder men Than you yourself but if you must pretend You may meet your end Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you Are you willing to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins Try to hide your hand Forget how to feel (forget how to feel) Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel (spin of the wheel) Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you Are you willing to die? There are actually three versions. The "rock" mix which was the single, the "pop" version which is on the "Best of bond" compilation and this one, the film version. The pop version doesn't have hi-hats on the first verse, this one does, and on this one, the horn section is louder. I'd like to find the film version in wav/lossless, but a rip is better than nothing. Anyway, the film version of the song is the most epic-sounding, and is the most "Bond" for me ! cheers

Along with Skyfall the two best Bond's songs I've ever heard
@josephparrotta11593 жыл бұрын
I feel like this entire song is written from the perspective of M talking to Bond. The main give away is the name - it's a plot point in the movie (Bond knows what "M" stands for, but can't tell anyone). Hence, "You Know My Name". All the lyrics fall into place after that.
@YankeeBlues213 жыл бұрын
100%. The first time you hear it, before you’ve seen the film, in part because it’s male vocals and sings about, essentially toughening up for this line of work, you’re led to believe its Bond’s POV toward someone like Vesper or some other character. When you’ve seen the film (especially several times), it’s clear it’s from the POV of M to the rookie 007. But there ARE lines that work both ways for M to Craig’s Bond, and as an anthem for the character as a whole that fans knew going into the Craig reboot, particularly the chorus “arm yourself because no one else here will save you, the odds will betray you, and I will replace you[....]are you willing/ready to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins. You know my name”. M to the newly promoted Bond...or an experienced (Connery/Lazenby/Moore/Dalton/Brosnan) Bond to every ally and love interest we’ve seen him go through over dozens of movies? It’s not just a banger of a song, it’s got layers.
@_greenrunner_3 жыл бұрын
The verses are from M’s perspective, the chorus is from James’s perspective. M’s verses lays out the dangers of the job, how it took down tougher men and his life is forfit etc. James’s chorus is him giving a simple reply, the coldest blood run through my veins. “You know my name” is directed at us, because we already know what Bond is about. Hence the reason why they keep singing it when he is in frame at the end

If you take a life, do you know what you'll give Odds are, you won't like what it is When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me By the merciless eyes I've deceived I've seen angels fall from blinding heights But you yourself are nothing so divine Just next in line Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize; it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you Are you willing to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins You know my name If you come inside, things will not be the same When you return to the night If you think you've won You never saw me change The game that we have been playing I've seen this diamond cut through harder men Than you yourself But if you must pretend You may meet your end Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize; it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you Are you willing to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins (Bridge) Try to hide your hand Forget how to feel (Forget how to feel) Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel (A spin of the wheel) Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize; it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you Are you ready to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins You know my name (You know my name) You know my name (You know my name) You know my name! You know my name! You know my name!

For people saying this version was never released - it was, on the 2008 edition of the Best of Bond... James Bond compilation. Might be on the 2012 release too, but I haven't checked which version was used on that.
@beckhambrad9 жыл бұрын
***** I owned the 2008 version and the 2012 version, and while the lyrics are from the same cut, the orchestration is different. THIS version, which is not on either, i think is the best one.

***** I agree with what Bradley Polak said. I recently purchased the 2008 edition of "The Best of Bond" and the version on that CD is *definitely* not this version.. it still sounds like the rock version to me.

+dawg daze Isn't this version from the theatrical release? I think that's where I first heard it.
@knight_owl70209 жыл бұрын
+UltimateWheelman This version is the theatrical version, but the 2008 CD, "The Best of Bond" is the rock version, when someone said it was the theatrical version.

If rock music fits well in a Bond theme, imagine Queen doing a Bond theme in the late '70s or early '80s

There are two types of people, the ones that think this music is better than Skyfall, and the ones that think Skyfall is better than this one, and then there's me, who enjoy both songs and openings.

I wasn't fully appreciating the greatness of Casino Royale and this theme song when I first saw the movie, I was more into Jason Bourne movie series and CR feels like a weak copy of Jason Bourne. But things changed when I watched the movie again recently. I think it's the best Danny Craig Bond movie and arguably the best Bond movie to date and this song just adds to the movie's greatness.

Best Bond film ever. It also had one of the 3 best theme songs along with Goldeneye by Tina Turner and License to Kill by Gladys Knight.

I tried singing this & it's damned Ffff-ing hard. Cornell showed his superior talent doing this song. I would put him in the same category as Jim Morrison...but I don't even think Morrison could've done this one as well. (& yes, I'm a Doors nut).
@GuitarMikeRocks5 жыл бұрын
And even if one can hit the notes in this song, doing it with the vocal tone Cornell hits on this is insane. Give Jim Morrison some credit though, he was a deeper baritone. He could probably hit lower notes than Chris Cornell ;)
