Excellent!!! Mclaughlin is an extraordinary guitarist and one in a handful of innovator in music altogether. The guy has transcended genre, style and has therefore created a whole new vocabulary for guitar player. I place him right on top with the likes of Lenny Breau, Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Parker, Coltrane and Miles Davies.

Thank you! First I was trying to count it. Then I was trying to play along. Then I tried counting again. Then I said, "I'll bet that's not it." I found the timing on a Reddit forum. And now here's the guitar part perfectly explained so it doesn't have to drive me insane for the rest of my life and I can get back to enjoying the music. Thank you again! ❤

I've never noticed before how the first two chords of the extended chord progression of the 'Melody' are the same as the first two chords of 'Guardian Angel'. Also how similar it is both rhythmically and key to the much earlier 'Binky's Beam' from his debut album 'Extrapolation'. What great development and extrapolation. Thanks for this.
@247GuitarwithHowardHart4 жыл бұрын
It is indeed true! I think of it as a 'compositional form' he was exploring at the time... Not unlike Stravinsky, Webern or other composers. Guardian Angels may very well be the 'climax' of that style before moving on to his European period :-)

I wonder if Abercrombie got his idea for Timeless from the first part of this. Similar.
@jimdep6542 Жыл бұрын
No doubt. I heard a lot of McLaughlin's licks and phrasing from Abercrombie when he first started getting noticed by the general public. There were a lot of JM's imitators back then, as they were thought of as the coolest things since witches started hanging out in chest freezers.

On the original album it starts actually on the "and of 1" You can tell from the drums but it is absolutely the and of 1 on the original recording, not the "and of 4". Bur for some reason, when john plays it these days, he starts it on the "and of 4" like you do here.
@247GuitarwithHowardHart Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting observation... In John's own book of transcriptions, which came out in the early 80's, he has it written as starting on the and of 4 - Go figure?

There is a live video where John plays the squelch part and nothing happens. We don't hear anything. I don't know what went wrong. Very nice playing. Even if it is simple, it sounds great.

An important point about YKYK is that it's a lot simpler to keep straight if you keep in mind that it's basically in a very straightforward 4/4 signature throughout. That is, the main progression is one measure of arpeggiated 8th notes, grouped 3+3+2, followed by extended note in the next measure: |(Xxx)(Xxx)(Xx)|X.... This is then followed by two 4/4 measures (typically filled with improvisation by other instruments) and the whole cycle starts again. The exception is an insertion of [what is called here] "the melody", which consists of a 3/4 measure containing 8th notes grouped 3+3. So the sequence goes |3/3(Xxx)(Xxx)|4/4(Xxx)(Xxx)(Xx)|X... The "screeches" then come on the beats in the (4/4) measure preceding the main cycle: First time: |[rest][rest][rest][SCREECH]|(Xxx)(Xxx)(Xx)|X... Second time: |[rest][rest][SCREECH][SCREECH]|(Xxx)(Xxx)(Xx)|X... Third time: |[rest][SCREECH][SCREECH][SCREECH]|(Xxx)(Xxx)(Xx)|X... (My apologies for trying to type musical notation into a Safari/iPad editor. ;-) )
@247GuitarwithHowardHart4 жыл бұрын
It is indeed an easy one in the Mahavishnu catalog to grasp. McLaughlin transcribes it as 4/4, with one measure of 3/4 inserted at the 'chord shift', which some might view as an Em(b6) or flat 13 chord
