Just Tuesday I purchased 6 lbs of 80/20 ground beef for $1.87 lb. It was a loss leader at Albertson’s (one of my most expensive grocery stores.). Limit was 6 lbs so that is what I bought. Came home and repackaged it for the freezer. I always buy my meat and chicken on sale and put it in the freezer.

My mom ( born in 1941) lived on a farm , no indoor plumbing, unless you count a hand pump in the kitchen sink . Flour sack dresses made on a treadle sewing machine . They grew their own food , foraged in the woods for berries to make jam. We are spoiled.

You were talking about how we snack so much today and that’s true. I’m in my 60’s and we didn’t have snack foods when I was a child. If we wanted a snack it was a piece of bread or a piece of cheese, soda crackers with peanut butter or maybe a celery stick. Once in awhile we had graham crackers which I loved to dip in milk. No chips, cookies, granola bars, etc.. When I think about it, it’s no wonder that a large portion of the population is obese.

I'm in my early 30s in Australia and that's how I was taught to snack and how I still snack although fruit is a favourite of mine now too, just one banana or a plum in the morning or afternoon or whatever is cheap at the store that week. If I ate my dinner and was still hungry, I'd have a bowl of plain lettuce 😂 Or a piece of bread with some jam on. Cookies are a dessert for when dessert night is.

That was really interesting.... thanks for doing the research on the figures back in 1947 compared to now! I'm not at all surprised that we're much better off these days in comparison! Even when we got married nearly 40 years ago it was different with much lower expectations! We bought a few essential pieces of furniture at thrift stores & the only new items for anything were wedding or engagement gifts! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

At Bible study tonight, the teacher blessed us with PB&J sandwiches. I need to make them more often. It was made with love. We talked about how Jesus loves the sinners. We also went through the history of the song "Amazing Grace", I first heard it when I was at a rehabilitation place. There was a room with a party, and they were singing the song. I snuck in and listened to it.

Hi I am in Australia our 27 year old twins are both buying a house each they have never had debt , have 50% deposits and 12 months emergency funds. They worked very hard, 6 days a week both in physical work as arborists did not go out with friends but had a goal and a plan. They did not get any help from anybody but they have lived home with us but they did pay rent to us. They are going to areas they can a ford and looking at houses that are well within their means. It can be done in 2024 if you are prepared to work and sacrifice to reach your goals.

Between the years of 1987 and 1994 I worked in my brother and sister in laws tiny little grocery store for $2 per hour after taxes. That and my child support of $300 monthly is what I supported my two small daughters on. Tough but I did it. I chose to work for my brother for 30 hours a week because I lived within yelling distance of the store. I did not have to drive far to work, and I did not have to pay a babysitter. I wanted to be with and near my daughters who were dealing with their dad and I divorcing and him moving to Chicago. They needed me and I needed them.

Another thing that my parents and grandparents never had was credit card debt. Which a lot of people have nowadays because they want their lifestyle. I do have a credit card but it gets paid off in full every month. I got married in 1977 and we rented a small one bedroom apartment for $80 a month which was considered cheap even back then. My husband was working but I was still in school. I furnished our house with hand me downs and garage sale items. A lot of people think everything has to be brand new nowadays. My house is still furnished Mainely with hand-me-downs and resale items . I don't see the need to buy brand new things. It's like I tell my kids it's not always how much you make but how you spend it.

Tawra, When you go to your Safeway/Albertsons store, when you go to the meat department, check the sell by date - if it is within 2 - 3 days of the date you are there, you can see if the meat mgr will discount it more an add'l 25 to 30% & sometimes 50% (even if it is on sale) .... If he will do so the disc sticker will be added to your package. Also ask them when their unposted senior day is - found out mine is first Wednesday of the month.

I agree with a majority of this! My only question would be, and it may be nearly the same.. but what was the rent to income requirement? The properties in my town are a minimum of 3x the rent and some are 4x. Now I’m sure there are the odds and ends apartments they could find some wiggle room on. So really that $1200 apartment you can’t make less than $23 an hour. That being said, yes! Shop smart, work hard, stop the eating out.. life’s hard but it’s a heck of a lot harder when you make bad choices!

Just a heads up for seafood lovers: Lent starts on Feb 14 this year, so stores will have big sales on fish/ shrimp and eggs. Even if you don't observe Lent or abstain from meat on Fridays, this will be the time to stock up on those foods that are usually very expensive. This weekend, my local store has varieties of fish for $2.49/lb. That's cheaper than I can get any beef or chicken breasts.

All the details that I thought I know by motivated and emotionally moved do not work in reality. I had to practice literally according to what Jill said, especially from early shows, helped me to pay off the mortgage. Ever since I listen to you guys more and try to put them into practice.

I was born in 1960 and left home in1981. I remember my Mama making two big sheet pans of cat head biscuits every morning. Sometimes she would have to make more by supper time. She also made the best corn bread. Another type of bread she made was what I call corn pones which she fried up like pan cakes in a skillet. My Daddy would make up a dough and fry it up in a skillet like Mom did the corn pones if Mom was not able to be home for some reason. Us kids had the best fun throwing small pieces of his bread on the ceiling, if it stuck, we knew it was not done, if it fell back down it was done and we would eat it. There were 8 of kids in the family but two were married by the time I remember. I grew up with 4 brothers, one sister and one niece that my mother raised and by the time we were grown she felt just like my blood sister, not my niece.

I think part of the problem is the 80's and 90's babies were raised in a generation of excess. No one I knew had one car, or no cable etc. We literally know nothing different and it's just gotten progressively more and more excessive. I cloth diapered, make my own seasonings/mixes, don't use paper towels etc and my parents think I'm crazy.

Oh man. Date night 🙄 My husband and I catch so much flack because we don't do date nights. People, especially Christians, have been brainwashed into thinking that date night is essential for a healthy marriage. Such a lie!

Jill, expanding on the recipe for potato soup - used to be simple baked chicken - now all the recipes say to add a can of cream of mushroom soup, a block of cream cheese and some heavy cream and sour cream, and don't forget that pound or so of shredded cheddar. I am so astonished. Not just for chicken, but also for pork chops. Not only are people much more unhealthy, and fat, but how do you "portion" that extra stuff. I like shake 'n bake for pork chops only, but I also do oven fried chicken all the time. Because that's what I like.

There's a difference between bar keeper's liquid version and powder. The powder actually works, it is an abrasive, wear gloves and use carefully. No I don't use it to disinfect. It is only like $2 /can.

Tawra what do you do when your spouse is such a picky eater? He only likes bologna sandwiches, chips, bananas, cokes and Vienna sausages, hot dogs and eats cereal for a snack at night. This everyday! I can make a pot of vegetable hamburger or ground turkey soup and cornbread and eat a week. I Always have to go back to the store to buy more of his stuff. It gets expensive.

100% agree!! We are in such a privileged society and people don't like to hear that, because it removes any responsibility from them. I'm not saying people don't struggle or fall on hard times but for a vast majority of us we are living like royality. We have food banks, charities, shelters, benefits and communities supporting their people. We have far more than they had in the 40s. We have generous government assitance and housing (here in the UK) and I get so cross at people who tell me "They don't get enough" yet they have smart phones, cars, holidays, tattoos, peircings , designer or named brand clothing & shoes, takeaways, nights out etc etc the list goes on! (again not saying people dont truly struggle) We really need to get a grip! I've been with my husband 24 years and we started out with nothing. Wr had 2 children and earning £11,000 a year. We had to scrimp and scrape (literally counted pennies) 15 years later we have 9 children, only living in a small 800sqft and we make the best of our situation. We have an income that puts food on the table and we live within our means. We might not have the fancy car or holidays but we have what we need and don't complain 😊 (the debt free journey continues)
