For that reason they will always have a special place in my heart. Now I have fireflies under my balcony every night and it really brings me comfort in these times.

I'm from Ontario, and we don't get a lot of fireflies here. But last June I went to Indiana to visit my best friend in person for the first time, who I had been talking to online for years. I remember that first night, being driven to their house from the train station, and just looking in awe at the dark corn fields that almost looked like a reflection of the night sky with all their twinkling lights. I had only seen a few fireflies in my life so it was hard to comprehend just how many there were. That night I caught fireflies in my hands while running barefoot in the grass with my best friend, and I felt the happiest I ever have. I was going to go back and visit this year, but for obvious reasons that isn't possible. It's been almost exactly a year since my visit, and I'm thankful for this video. I can't see any fireflies this year, but me and Addie are still making our own light, keeping each other sane over video chat in these crazy times. I hope to see the fireflies again soon.

As an illustrator, I still find joy in simple, maybe stupid things such as the fact that a gray spot, something that looks like a taint on your screen, will actually turn into light when you change the background to a darker hue. I often catch myself thinking that the brightest light is the one that shines in the darkest places, how the best of us could be the worst and vice versa, were situations different. Making our own light is a great idea and so is keeping in mind that you don't need to be full #fff to glow in the darkest places.

Hey John. A few weeks ago you made a video about how "you miss the luxury of caring about things that don't matter." It really spoke to me at the time, and after some reflecting, it dawned on me that I was in fact drowning under a sea of nothingness. All that existed was the world at large--which, being aware of the grand scheme of things isn't inherently a bad thing, but that it was dehumanizing me to a point of blank-slatedness, was. That video pulled me out of a several month slump that I didn't even know I was in. You get so used to the sinking feeling when everything you know changes, that you don't even feel yourself slipping away with it. I wanted to say thank you, because I found something to care about because of your story. I made the effort to stay grounded. And while yes, I have been out protesting and using my platform (safely), and continuing to protect myself and others during this pandemic, I've also dived head-first into loving things again. I needed to take care of myself. And sometimes one needs a little help getting there. Thank you. I hope you and your family are well.

"Their state beverage is literally tomato juice." 😂 I think I saw Saturn around an hour ago. Quick internet search at least confirms my bias so far. Also, fireflies are called Jugnoo (जुगनू) in Hindi, and although I haven't seen them in large numbers, always get excited if one accidentally enters my room or see a couple by my window. Also, bioluminescent algae light up beaches often it seems. I only saw it once in Mumbai. Would love to visit some place where waves have more of these algae, more prominent, brighter. More light amid darkness.

Listening to Dear Hank and John is so great because you directly see how the ideas in the pod influence vlogbrothers videos. In the latest episode, John was talking about cloaking innocence and vulnerability with cloaks of irony when talking about how beautiful sunsets are, and removing those cloaks too often can lead to banal platitudes and the like. Hank also mentioned ghost/lonely planets in that episode I think.

I know I'm a bit late to this video, but tonight I feel like I'd like to let Vlogbrothers and Nerdfighteria in on a secret. You see, I save most new Vlogbrothers videos for later on when I feel I need a little light in my life. Tonight was one of those times. I don't know how a video about fireflies made me cry, but it did. Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you John and Hank. Your videos never cease to amaze me, and there is something so extraordinary about the eloquence and beautiful nature of your videos. I love the feeling that watching content about fireflies or wierd fish or literalky any mundane occurence can bring so much more wisdom to this platform. A lot of the time, through watching your videos I feel much older than 16. Thanks for the wisdom, the wonder, and the incredible content. Boys, I'll see you next upload.

Idk who came out of high school as a person they liked, but I was certainly not one of them.

That's because none of us came out of high school as a complete adult individual... That's usually closer to 25 or so. ;o)

Gotta say I'm really loving the way topics from the podcast are coming up in the videos, especially since they are approached in very different ways. It adds a cool continuity

"So here's to celebrating light where we find it and making light where we don't." Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!! That is so beautiful and encouraging! It's the idea that we can create light even in places where there aren't any so that everywhere has light. It's so beautiful!!!

That's the sky! It's quite a dense canopy of trees, so that was the only bit of sky visible. -John

You know, I often don't think I need a video so simple and beautiful. But as these past couple videos showed me, I am often wrong. Thank you for taking the time to talk about beauty, when so many don't.

Some vlogbrothers videos make me feel. I am unable to name this feeling but I know it's a good one. I was just 5 years old in 2007 and was unaware of the existence of vlogbrothers and I still feel surreal thinking about how much these videos matter to me, now. I am so grateful to be a part of this beautiful nerdfighteria community.💙
