I started free ranging this year. Throw them alittle food morning and night most times they won't touch it. But I get 6 months of winter so ,I'll need it soon till spring. Real grain seems better than the commercial foods though, they alway pick it out when I mix it!

What else do you add as feed to raise chickens?

I've found out that feeding 100% BSFL makes my chickens grow fast and the taste is good also. same with eggs. they lay big eggs and delicious eggs too when fed 100% BSFL. but sometimes if I have low stocks of with BSFL as feeds, I mix with other ingredients mostly edible plant leaves. but most of the time, its 100% BSFL if my stocks are abundant.

@@johnologunde2781 no! Chickens need carbohydrates, and minerals and vitamins that are found in greens, and seeds and protein sources like BSF. Chickens will eat what their bodies need given the choice they will eat greens, seeds and proteins.

while its good to know BUT there's still COST especially fish meal which is getting EXPENSIVE these days. that's why I stick to BSFL because not only its comparable to fishmeal best of all is that its FREE!

yes. its still organic. think of it like this analogy. say an american eats arabic foods. does that mean he is no longer an american? of course not. even if an american eats indian foods his whole life, it doesn't change the fact that he is still an american, not indian. same thing with BSF, no matter what you feed the larvae, it doesn't change the fact that its an insect and its one of the nutritious and natural food of chickens which is organic (meaning no commercial or artificial ingredients). hope this helps :)

​@@LindaBurston A thought. It depends on the 'organic' in your question. Larva eat only 'organic/carbon/natural'...called "Organic Matter" However, if what you are asking Is if the Larve can be call "certified organic", I believe that the organic matter (feed source) would need tobe certified. ***Maybe your interest is in selling Certified Organic meat birds or C.O. eggs -- and that is a very good question!*** ...I thought the American eating indian food, did not answer your question... yes, BSF larva is still BSF larva which is a natural food sorce for chickens. My 2cents.

@@reneebulkley1333 yes, thank you. You are on the same track. If you feed a chicken something that is not organic, it wont be organic. If the BSF larvae are not organic because of the non organic food they have been fed, then your bird could not be organic. That's what I was looking for clarity on. Thanks again.

yes 100% BSF larvae! no other ingredients in feed except additional vitamins in their water. that's all really :)

@@KhamlandChronicles-kq4gm they get the carbohydrates from greens. Chickens that are allowed to free range will eat grass, leaves, seeds, bugs etc. They eat a varied diet and can actually get protein toxicity from being fed only protein sources.
