BenHigginsOfficial I’m using an iPad , it comes up with a url of mailchi.mp. Then in the middle is a large notice saying badass tips for badass people , then it tells you about exclusive tips , offers etc , at the bottom it says about no spam and details are safe. But there is no physical link or form to interact with to allow you to register your email address . I will check it on my Mac right now see if it’s the same or just on tablets. Btw I watched your speed picking , anyone can do it video a couple of days ago , and afterwards I was able to pick faster than 80 bpm 16ths which I had been stuck on and actually got to 90 doing the old 1234. Single string I think I touched 100 bpm . Naturally this got my attention and I think I will be getting your course pretty damn quick lol. I had not tried for a while as I got bad pains in my wrist practicing the paul Gilbert famous lick /exercise. But it seemed ok the other day . Cheers .... Paul

Finally alternate picking really explained. I have not many put an emphasis on inside and outside picking and its consequences. and as such basically "plan" the lick. It puts this awareness just a bit further into the brain. Thanks!

djwave28 it amazed me how intelligent Ben is. He is able to tear apart techniques and understand and explain calmly the root of it. He is like my math prof when i was at grad school who able to tear apart long equations and explain the basic of it, i really enjoyed his class and somehow maths was interesting and approachable. Ben is just like him in different field.

Master Higgy, great lesson. I will write this down on my notebook: Outside Picking - crossing after downstroke // Inside Picking - Crossing after an upstroke. @@BenHigginsOfficial I took the ideas learned from this video and I start to practice the lick of day 2 of speed acelerator workshop. I realised something really interesting on my natural string crossing motion. Actually you pointed that in the speed acelerator course but I was so blind I couldn’t see it! I will share this with you in the bullet proof technique course when we get to the picking technique sections! This is why your comments to our videos in your courses are so important! Great video. This was super helpful... There's this short riff in Bark at the Moon, where Jake E Lee alternates back and forth between the E and the A, playing two notes on each, super fast. It's always boggled my mind how to do that. I can never quite pull it off perfectly at the accurate speed.

That part about the end is so relevant. Yngwie is a perfect example. His overall technique is very very limited, but because he's very good at what he's good at, he can still play like a demon possessed and make it sound great. Even the likes of Rusty Cooley admits that he structures a lot of lines to be outside picking.

This lick works wonders! Thanks again friend The only question I have is, should I start getting used to using my pinky to lead on the higher frets? I feel like a really have to scrunch my hand because my hands are more on the big side, but I also haven’t practice doing it that way much, I usually play these lines with my first 3 fingers. I have gotten in the habit of playing power chords with my pinky though, if that means anything. What’s your opinion?
@BenHigginsOfficial6 жыл бұрын
I would say to exploit what you do naturally and make them your strengths. It's good to be able to use your pinky when you need it... but for the higher frets it's all about what works... even Yngwie reverts mainly to the first 3 fingers once past the 15th fret
@Iheartdgd6 жыл бұрын
BenHigginsOfficial thanks for your reply, I did not know that about Yngwie. Around the 15th is where I stop using my pinky as well. I think I’ll practice using it for a while and see how it feels. Thanks again

Amazing videos. I've begun trying to practice this to a metronome. The accents of the lick are on the beginning of every 3 note pattern, correct? Meaning, am I to practice this lick in triplets? Do you know what I mean? I see everyone practicing alternate picking in 16th notes which would mean the accent would be on the 1 (split into 4 beats...1-e-and-a, 2-e-and-a, etc). These seem to be set up where the accent would be on every 3rd note (1-trip-let, 2-trip-let) LOl I have no idea if I'm making sense. I just want to practice it correctly. It's too fast for me to hear what you're doing when you play to the metronome and where you're placing the accents. Thanks for you help!
@BenHigginsOfficial6 жыл бұрын
Yes, for 16th note triplets, you would put the accent on the first note of every group of 6. This will mean it's always the same pick stroke direction, whereas trying to accent after every 3rd note would mess you up. So, the way I practice 16th note triplets is to have 6 notes to every one click of the metronome.

Im stuck on master of puppets the second part... You have to inside pick and outside pick and it really messes you up to play correctly...
@BenHigginsOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Hi, which part do you mean, can you give me a timestamp in the song? All the rhythm parts are played with down strokes, which is why it's so damn hard! The only alternate picking I'm aware of is during Kirk's solo. I could be wrong...
@aaebsssb99144 жыл бұрын
No you don’t. It HAS to be downpicked all the way through all the way to the solo. That’s how it sounds so heavy everything is downpicked watch a live Metallica show like Toronto 1986 where Hetfield downpicks at inhumane speeds
@remnant247 жыл бұрын
If you add notes to your lick to accommodate your alternate picking, then it's no longer the same lick. This doesn't solve a problem, it's just admitting defeat to odd-notes-per-string picking patterns. In other words you're adapting music to technique where it should be the other way around. What you seem to be trying to avoid here: - having to use economy picking or - having to change the direction of your pickslanting when changing strings So as far as strict alternate picking is concerned, in reality it's not an issue of inside vs outside picking, it's an issue of 1-way vs 2-way pickslanting.
@PieceOfDuke7 жыл бұрын
You're a bit critical and your comment feels sound in a way, but somehow I perceived this video in a different way. This was just what I was looking for. Now I know how to craft a couple of outside and a couple of inside picking licks to practice both, to be ready for anything. It's not as much about adapting music to technique, as it is about adapting exercises to be able to play anything.
@plotblue2107 жыл бұрын
Facepalm.I was wondering why you seem to be the only sensible person in the comment section of these videos.This guy,although he plays quite well,completely avoids confronting the real challenges with picking accuracy at higher tempos, particularly while crossing strings.Troy Grady has a series on his youtube channel called cracking the code where he actually confronts the mechanical picking challenges and offers detailed solutions.Its like this Ben guy is trying to sell magic beans or something.

This video isnt about keeping a three note per string pattern its about using inside picking vs outside picking and how to use them

George Prenosil-- Not exactly. Ben did mention at the beginning of the video, the two-way pick-slanting technique that Troy Grady teaches. He's simply showing us an additional strategy-- nothing wrong with that.

george prenosil Troy Grady does not reveal much in his videos unless you pay to subscribe to his lessons , Ben is providing here , exercises and ideas for free to give you experience of inside and outside picking plus showing you ways you can craft licks for one or the other if you only like to pick one way. Plus his courses are very reasonably priced should you decide to delve further into the subject

@Wormweed8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I didnt focus much on economy picking yet. But when i play i tend to take the shortest path, so that might mean 2+ upstrokes or downstrokes in a row (similar to sweep picking) instead of pure alternating. Im trying to stick to alternate picking though

i'm new to playing solos, and i started to learn, broke it on 3 sections (2nd and 3rd are very fast). how'd you recommend to practice them: get 1st section to original speed (136 bpm), or learn them evenly (97 bpm currently on 1st section). sorry for textwall, liked and subbed!!!
@BenHigginsOfficial7 жыл бұрын
You've got the right idea by breaking them down into smaller sections to concentrate on the problem areas and drill them individually but it's also good to go through and memorise the whole thing too and play it through at slower tempos. I would memorise it a section at a time and then practise playing it all through but then I would get serious on the tricky parts by isolating them.
