My husband often tells me that he can't understand why I eat something that I know will make me sick... Yeah, you can't understand because you are HEALTHY! And also many many times I hear from my family "You are sick again?!" with a tone and a look that insinuates that it's my fault, that I probably ate something I shouldn't have, which most of the time is not really true. I happen to be sick for no reason because I have a CHRONIC illness !

I have a couple of rescue kits. One has my rescue meds & the other is filled with things that make me feel better or things to distract me (fidget, puzzle, game, book, etc). I also have duplicate blankets & pillows in the bedroom & in the living room in my chair. That way I don’t have to carry them from one spot to the other.

Maggie I look at something and say no don’t eat it, no don’t drink it! The next thing I’m saying is why did I eat it? Why did I drink that? It’s because we’re tired of denying ourselves so we pay the price.

Oh, maggie, been there, done that, at times sadly I still do it. A long time ago I finally got so disgusted with the advice and platitudes that I basically told the close by world, no one can give me any advice unless they go through it first. It has saved me from many troubles. My illnesses have provided me with a life that pretty much sucks, but no one will ever say “if you would only”…. My warm bed, my food processor, my stash of water and powder electrolytes, my dog, and a very quiet area is what is needed. We are not our illnesses, we a humans who happen to have a chronic illness.

Spot on with today's makeup... although... you don't need makeup. I've been following you since August 6th when i woke up in the hospital with a colostomy bag. You helped me through some rough times. I'm now 72 and had my ostomy reversed on 12/26/22. Still enjoy your videos. Your attitude still helps me maintain a positive outlook. Thanks for all you do and have done for us Crohn's/IBD patients. Zak is a lucky guy.

I woke up with a colostomy too, in mid-April last year. But I only just got mine reversed. I'm two weeks into recovery but I'm here bc eating is still a problem: almost worse, so I hope things will return to normal. I'm incredibly constipated. I gotta move more; probably shouldn't be doing this. Oh well. It beats celebrity gossip. Did your recovery go well? Congratulations on doing all that at age 72. (I'm not far behind you, actually. Just in denial!)
@bobsteffen2011 Жыл бұрын
@Cockeyed Optimista ; Yes, my reversal recovery has gone well and faster than I anticipated. All systems are working normally, except maybe my stool is still looser than I would like. I lost 22 pounds after my colostomy surgery, but I've gained 16 pounds back.... darn. Crohn's disease was my tormentor for years. 4 surgeries later, I'm short about 14 inches of colon and 6 inches of small intestine. Only discomfort I notice is the Stoma closed scar is still tender to touch. It's healing, so hang in there. P.S., I don't miss the bag. 😊

I never really thought about it,but I also have mandatory items here just in case. I always have chicken,beef broth or bone broth on hand and eggs.Sometimes I make egg drop soup by throwing an egg in hot broth.I also have frozen home made soup on hand. ... Pheneragain and several bottles of potassium and magnesium and two electric throw blankets and a heating pad. are added to the mix and the usual pain meds...I very seldom eat things I know better than to eat,but sometimes something safe might whack me out of the blue,so I'm prepared. I see more than a GP Doc,but I also go to my GP first..I've also got the Pheneragain shot in the butt,so to save the hassle,I have a lifetime supply of it as needed and no arguments from the Doc on that.🙂

Great topic Maggie! I just taught a class to my cancer patients about The state of awareness or "enlightenment". To be aware, to recognize all of our patterns of thoughts and actions and to continue to do better, this is the enlightened person. We are not perfect, nor will we ever be perfect, but to continue to watch, learn, and grow is our responsibility. To do better, to fail, and to start over, again and again. You are doing it, gracefully and humbly. If you're ever free and have the interest I talk about these issues on Old Vine Zen. Many thanks to you and your inspiration!!!

Although I get a lot of understanding and compassion from the people around me, I think the part that is sometimes difficult to really understand for healthy people is that it is a CHRONIC illness. Which means it is almost always there and cannot easily be solved. And thats okay, because it is a difficult concept to grap even if you go through it. And we can't just be always strict with ourselves.

@@hannahedwards1626 Yeah, that's true. I can hardly even do "a taste", like when people just have "a thin slice" or "just a bite" of something. But if I Know it's going to hurt me (for whatever reason), I'm getting better at it. It's hard to be around temptation, too: I might not even be thinking about something, but then if I see a lot of it, I want it.

Maggie I have learned more from you than anybody. I have never had a doctor for my Ostomy. I went to a wound care doctor at the hospital a few times when my whole belly was infected and we had to figure out what pouches would not or would break me out.

When I had my ostomy I had a lot of problems with leakage and the wafer not wanting to stay on my skin. What made matters worse was I developed a hernia. After enough time passed and I was able to have the reversal surgery. I just wondered why I didn’t have an Ostomy Nurse checking on me or teaching me tips and such. For those of you who are new patients who have an Ostomy please be sure to have a Dr or Nurse Practitioner check on you. I don’t want you to be like I was with an ill fitting Ostomy xoxo

(no pun intended 😜) I try to refrain like you do, but I'm willing to hear them and assume they'll listen to me. In the middle of months of testing, I changed primary care provider because the doc I bonded with left the group. I'm seeing the new primary in early May. Therefore, I'm dealing with 4 different specialist who I often find don't know what the others have done. Fortunately, I travel with all the reports in case they can't be accessed by the doc.

It would be so amazing to talk to you. I am also a nurse and have a temporary loop ileostomy due to years of colitis, constipation, polyps, belly pain, medications, etc. The plan is a collector and anastomosis but I feel hopeless in this journey. I have had the temporary loop ileostomy for 3 and a half months and am still in the hate stage. I have lost 25 pounds, no food is appealing and I cannot keep an appliance on longer than 2 days, but more often I have a leak within 24 hours. My output will not thicken up no matter what, I have been in the hospital 3 times; My skin is very sensitive and EVERY seal, ring, paste, sheet, etc I have tried has dissolved and I have output on my skin very rapidly. I am so tired of having burning, itching, discomfort around my stoma. Tonight we put a brava protective seal on my skin and a trio siltac seal on top of that and then sat my wafer on top and I am praying with all my being that the silicone seal keeps the output from seeping in between my stoma and the wafer. Any advice appreciated!

Hey Maggie a question as a fellow ostomily user (ileo and uro): Sometimes because I always try to stay positieve, people say things like "oh well I think I want to have a ileostoma now because less pain in my stomach seems great! But they seem te forget the surgery, the stress, the insecurities all day every day like is my stoma leaking.. Do you know what I mean? How do you deal with that?
@bunnylacy2097 Жыл бұрын
Oh god that’s so annoying. I’d just tell them like hey, I know I stay positive often but trust me, it’s not better than having some stomach discomfort. If you’d rather have an intense surgery, have a stoma that leaks and have to learn how to prep a bag in a way that won’t leak but it will sometimes anyway in public and so on than have the pain in your stomach then you should go see a doctor about that because it’s not all sunshine and butterflies. I have a lot of health issues and when people say things like that in relation to my issues I just break down that idea real quick. They need to know it’s not easier necessarily it’s just a different set of issues and a different way of living and many times it’s harder.
