This shelter is too legit! I'm so grateful to you Justin. I never thought of this before and it's so simple and easy! I'm going to show my 3 year old son how to do this.

Yessir, family is everything. I had my son out the other day helping me prep the materials for this video. He had a blast sawing up the 4 branches. Have fun with your son. See ya on the next one.

I got one of those from Pathfinder, it came with a damaged grommet. This is like 2 days after Christmas...I email the company and within a couple of days had a replacement, told me to keep the damaged one. Amazing company.

I have the Pathfinder emergency blankets in each of my cars. The Mylar blankets are a ridiculous waste. Spend one cold, wet night in one, you’ll see. The laminated Pathfinder blankets are much much better…and they are available at a reduced price if you buy anywhere other than Pathfinder store…from an old vet, retired in the foothills of east Tennessee.

yep i have a couple of those blankets. durable and they do reflect the heat back on you. but i have had one failure because of high winds. on the corners, instead of just running the cord back through the grommet, use a toggle on each corner. the toggle will distribute the pressure over a larger area. and won't pull the corners apart. just my experience.

Excellent points made. Great video. Now, if we can get Pathfinder manufacturers to make a color change from camouflage green to a light blue for civilian use. Since the blanket will most likely be used in an emergency situation, an easy to spot color would help both ground based search and rescue personnel and air rescue to locate a person experiencing an emergency! Green makes sense for military use, but for recreational users, an easy to locate color could save lives.

Thanks for the feedback. I was looking on their site and it looks like they also have it in blaze orange. Both options are nice in case you want to be more stealthy or visible.

One of, if not the, biggest mistakes people make is going into a wilderness area and underestimating the conditions. When I go on any hike I pack as though I'll get caught in a storm or other circumstance that requires I hunker down for 12-24 hours. I've spent hundreds of dollars and many hours learning to use the gear I may need, why leave it all at home?

I do exactly this 👍 Old school habits that still work. I carry this with an emergency bivy bag. Now I have never needed them, but twice over the years I have used them to come to the aid of those on the hills I have found unprepared. As part of my hiking and camping in the back of my mind that I will Always potentially come across those who will need my help.

Nice! 👍 The Pathfinder emergency blanket is a great product, especially if you reinforce the grommets/tie-out points with some Gorilla tape using Dave’s method. It’ll last for several uses before needing replaced. Another great product is the SOL heavy duty XL emergency blanket-super light weight, durable, and easy to rig. The SOL doesn’t have tight-out points, but an easy quick-fix with Gorilla tape and paracord loops.

I made one years ago using a Walmart mylar emergency blanket and a Walmart 5x7 nylon tarp and a can of spray adhesive. Carried it with me whenever I hiked into the Sierra back country to fly fish in case of an emergency.

A nice setup. I used to carry what was at the time the Grabber survival blanket before being copied by so many brands. But I ending ditching it because of the weight and the bulk. I keep forgetting taking it… Instead I am using a piece of Window Insulation Covering. It comes in different size but the one I use is a cut from a 90in (228cm) by 393in (10m) costing 26usd on Amazon. The folded size is double the size a thermal blanket for 3,5oz (100g). I can place it in the front or back pocket of my pant. I used it to protect the floor and as a tent as shown here. Not as rugged as the Grabber/pathfinder but largely enough for several days in the woods and soo light. Is does not resist punctures well (despite lots of people using it as a ground sheet for tent) but I placed one on top of my hammock and it stayed outside for 6 months enduring wind sun rain.

Honestly if I was stuck somewhere I wouldn’t be building a shelter. I would find a natural shelter, lean to, bush, or tree to prop myself and cover myself with the emergency blanket then sleep. I’m use to napping all day and in uncomfortable situations, setting up tents is overrated sometimes.

Back in the 60s I was assigned and schooled in cold weather survival. Took my training on Mt Hood in the middle of winter. I read of the "return 90% of your body heat back to you" stuff and thought it would be useful if needed. We flew into Point Barrow (flight of 2) Kaman Seasprite H2s. It was cold. I don't recall the temp now. Since we had to wait for transportation we had shutdown the wonderful heating system the aircraft had. We waited and we waited (those with military experience would understand this). Since I was at my limit of the exposure to the icebox the aircraft had become, I thought I would pull out the miracle mylar sheet to warm up a bit. NO. NOTHING. I found out that unless you had an alternate heat source to reflect the heat generated (think fire) the little sheet yielded no relief from the cold AT ALL. What Justin suggests is exactly what I have been preaching and using in my kit.

I am really trying to learn bushcraft skills and I appreciate this video and all you teach. While watching this, I noticed that there are a lot of leaves around. So I was wondering if you think it would be a good idea to gather a pile of the leaves under the shelter and lay your ground mat on top of the leaves? Would that help a lot with insulation?
@justinuriahphotoАй бұрын
Thanks, Corey, for asking. Conduction is something everyone will have to battle when it comes to laying directly on the ground. Your clothing choice should reflect the season and should be your first line of defense against the weather. That decision needs to be made before you leave home. If it's cold out I wouldn't sleep on the ground directly. I would wrap myself up in this emergency blanket and find some other source of shelter. Leaves won't offer you much value/insulation on a cold ground. If it's a warm summer's night, I've slept on a thin tarp many times mainly to mitigate moisture from the soil. Always remember that your clothing is key. Some people will carry sheep skins to put down on the ground to help with conduction. Thanks for watching! Glad to have ya in the community.
