In Western countries you can get unemployment benefits, often consifederable sums. The problem some would argue is that Western Europeans have too many unions and their labor is valued too high. After all if I start a business I do it in order to make money for myself, not to have you employed because you are a local, that is why the shipyards of Italy are full of Indians and the farms of Scotland full of Romanians. If you do not want immigrants coming to a country you might just ask tomorrow for lower wages and more working hours. This also happens to a certain extent here in Thailand, with laotians, burmese and cambodian workers. Immigration is not determined by the imaginary desire of this, or that government to replace its citizens, it s about increasing profits at the expense of wages.

I like the way Thais look after their own.
@informative_wanderlust28 күн бұрын
They don't, they are like most capitalist societies, they look after a tiny elite, while everyone else either suffers or gets by. The pension in Thailand is pitiful, which is why you see so many people in their 80s still working. This whole notion that Thais are benevolent and morally clean is utter nonsense. Anyone with half a grain of realism and has lived in Thailand for at least a year knows this.

No Westerner would want to work as a security guard, 7-11 girl (or boy), motorbike taxi driver, or street food vendor in Thailand. Or a Grab/Shopee/Food Panda/LINE delivery person. 12,000 THB a month. This is their, never colonized, country.

In the US companies are incentivized to hire brand new immigrants (from Africa, Brazil, Asia, etc.) over the descendants of the 1650 - 1850 American immigrants. What an idiotic phase America is in now.

What do you think would happen to the Thais if the government let foreigners take their jobs? It would be a disaster. Thailand is a caring society, most large companies hire more workers than that are required, like a shop has more workers than customers. Maybe they get tax breaks etc.. they pay low salaries but hire a lot to keep unemployment low and food in people's mouths. Most Thai's earn just enough to live with the basics, they know jobs are plentiful, so they are stress free and live in the now rather than thinking about the future.
@mtsutphin346828 күн бұрын
They hire a lot because only half of them will typically show up to work.

Spot on about the line & grab men. I know a female taxi driver in bangsaen. She cannot operate out of bkk or pattaya. She personally told me the taxi mafia would seek her out and prevent her from working again. So as for a farang ever becoming a motor bike taxi driver they'd be sussed within minutes.
@CHEERS_FEEL28 күн бұрын
Using the word xenophobic is incorrect here. The appropriate term is protectionist, especially because we're viewing jobs through the lens of citizenry, as oppose to race. Personally, I commend the Thais for keeping Thailand for Thai people. It's also reasonable to allow a small trickle of foreigners who CAN fill that specialized skill gaps that cannot be filled by the local population. I think it's absurd that people would want to work in Thailand earning Thai Baht over any Western currency; especially menial jobs.
@Nordic_Sky28 күн бұрын
Good catch. Protectionist is the right word.
