To play Eragon more accurately a bladesinger/paladin/drake warden ranger multiclass, but good luck meeting those stat requirements. Even a gestalt build would have a hard time meeting those minimums. If a Dm ever handwaves the stats, stat role jackpot or some other thing I'd play it in a heartbeat.

We had a drake warden ranger in our Icewind Dale campaign. She was a Dragonborn named Nala and she was actually really cool and was a super powerful member of the group. And her drake was hilarious and had his own personality. There was one time we had him send a message to another town and after a few days we wondered if he had made it so she summoned him back and he was so pissed. Because he had JUST got to the town before she summoned him back but it was before he could deliver the message

The greatest strength and weakness of the Drakewarden is that you are not the same character fantasy as you from Tier to Tier. You start off as Ranger Mulan with a scrappy Dragon buddy that unlike a familiar is tough enough to get in there. They are pet sized. They are great at keeping watch and are the great annoyance of DMs that like to check if party members fell asleep and they surprise the party. Then Tier 2-3. Dragon gets a level up in size and now you are in how to train your dragon the D&D version. they are Toothless on the way that they are more a partner then a flying buddy. And though you can’t ride them in the air but you focus of having a pet that can attack with your summons, pull people into your traps, you give them a speed boost and use them to kite enemies and run down fleeing people and capture them with little to no danger to you. Heck they are a full blown second character. That you can play cards with. But then tier 4, after your buddy reads Dragonlance novels and gets a bright idea. You ride them in the sky. Now you are even more likely to archer but you can be forgiven if you pick up Mounted Combat and a lance and doing a flyby attack with a long pointy stick. You become Marine air corp for the Middle fantasy Ages you fight anywhere land sea and air with advantages to suit. (Rangers have Climb and swim speed so you literally can fight everywhere). The weakness is that the last tier is so attractive it overwhelms all the others. Fact is you can summon a Draconic Spirit at level 9 as a Wizard or Bard and fly on that if that is your goal, but the Ranger is go anywhere do what ever you need fighter. (Those that want to add to it a single level dip into Cleric - Domains of Twilight, Pease and Light make most sense or a Rogue are good ways to power up but this class wants you to stay Ranger so more then one level is making it even less likely you get the dragonrider fun).

I'm sorry but I've been a ranger stan since I started playing DnD. I'm lucky enough to have been in a long running campaign where there's a lot of wilderness exploration so that even the "crappy" PHB abilities like favored terrain come in HUGE in terms of avoiding or getting an advantage on dangerous encounters. Simple fact is that anyone who doesn't like Rangers either don't know how to use it or the DM doesn't know how to plan with that class/player in mind.

Im a Ranger stan here, Ranger has GOOD Features and GREAT Spelllist, people just use it wrong Tasha especially is a good buffed Ranger with Favored Foe being esentially a better Hunters Mark(Cost only its own resources AND you allways proc it when it lands unlike Hunters Mark where you HAVE to pray it land) All the subclass features(Except Horizon and Monster Slayer) and Non Ranger Exclusive Spells are also great Fog Cloud, Pass without Trace, Goodberry, Conjure Animals/Woodland Beings, Locate Object, Spike Growth and Plant Growth, Speak with animals The list goes on Even Skill Proficiency Ranger somehow is more Skill monkey than the Rogue

@@RenoKyrie I gotta disagree with you on Horizon Walker and Monster Slayer. Monster Slayer is OP as hell in my opinion by virtue of Hunter's sense alone. Horizon Walker is AMAZING if you know how to utilize it. Which shouldn't be hard to figure out if you informed your DM at character creation that you wanted to play this subclass. A quality DM should plan their campaign in such a way that it should give every player the opportunity to use their character to the fullest extent.

My most favorite character I ever built/played was my Drake Warden, I did multiclass with Way of the Ascendant Dragon, but that was a flavor thing. I had so much fun with him, I let my DM play my Drake out of combat, and it was tons of fun. Especially when my party members tried to befriend her and ended up getting bit. Long back story short, my character was a young kitsune (fox kin, played it as a tabxi variant that originated in the faewilds) that lost his family/village and was rescued by bahamut and was further raised by a dragon, but one day the dragon disappeared so he went on a journey to find her. Probably not the most original back story but was so much fun to play.

One issue is that some 3rd level Draconic gifts are the same as being a Dragon born, which means you're losing out if you take that race, which is a pity as flavour wise it just seems perfect - your class is a part of your heritage. A Dragon born Drake Warden just seems to fit, and it opens up a lot of role-play potential. And the back story could be interesting.

The 3rd level ribbon and Dragon born species only have the language in common. The class covers this as in the book the class says if you can choose a language but it gives Dragonic as the first choice so RAW you can just pick another language. The same would be true for Kobolds and lizardfolk. So you are covered there.

Eh Draconic Gift is very much a ribbon feature. I'm sure any good DM would work with you to make it work, for example giving you advantage on persuasion or intimidation checks vs creatures that understand draconic.

Fun fact about Eragon series: When I read the second book, "Eldest", I was so enthralled by the story of main character's cousin, that I straight up skipped all chapters that were not about him. So when at the end of the book they met and I learned Eragon became an elf I was confused to say the least.

I'm just starting my 1st DnD campaign (finally) and I'm playing a Drakewarden/moon druid (taking just 2 levels in Druid as my plan right now) and I'm so excited to have fun with my Drake friend. Even at lower level the infuse attack is crazy handy... Yes I am already envisioning riding my drake into combat just to leap off, wild shape into a Brown Bear and just go to town on my target. The first 5e character I actually got to play was a Drake Warden. I took Druidic Warrior at 2nd level for Shillelagh and Guidance, and I had a fucking blast. Even managed to keep pace with the Paladin some of the time. My mext Ranger is going to he a Halfling Beast Master, also using Druidic Warrior, but her main focus is on buffing and enhancing her Beast of the Land mount. The only complication I foresee is figuring out when to take Mounted Combatant, and when to dip two levels of Fighter for the Action Surge and additional fighting style.

This i such a cool subclass. The only thing i would change is making the drake work like the "find steed"-mount, so you can share your initiative with it. That would make it easier to maneuvre around using it as a mount instead of having to move after your own turn is over.

Dude, if you want to be a dragon-rider, and not have the stigma of being a ranger, I’d recommend Laserllama’s homebrew class called the Magus. It’s essentially the wizard’s equivalent to the Paladin and Ranger, and it has a dragon-riding subclass called the Order of the Scales.

Drake Warden sounds very cool. About to switch out a Rune Knight fighter for a Swarmkeeper Ranger and its kind of nuts how many intrinsic spells he gets(w/ new Earth Genasi and Fey Touched): • Blade Ward as a bonus action x proficiency bonus(Earth Genasi) • Speak with Animals(team up with the DM and make the party sad that they've been feeding the party pet wrong) • Beast Sense • Hunter's Mark(Fey Touched) • Pass without Trace(Earth Genasi) • Misty Step(Fey Touched) And all of those spells get added to the spell list too.

I am very much playing my lvl 12 drakewarden like a dragoon with the piercing feat and using lances. Once I can ride the drake while flying with mounted combat and shield mastery, we’ll be flying around the battlefield swooping in with lance attacks. Throw in the spell primal guardian in order to get advantage on strength-based attacks, and hoo-boy

Great video, Drakewarden is a personal fav of mine that I've been waiting on a chance to play for a while now. Specifically been waiting for a game I know'll go to 11 so I can experience that breath attack just a little bit. I still think you're being a bit harsh having to bring up the 'Ranger stink' when the stigmas around other classes don't ever seeming to hold them back. Some of the base Ranger features are quite good actually, free expertise, extra movement speeds, ability to turn invisible. They have a good spell list with some great pickups, (Goodberry, Fog Cloud, Pass Without Trace, Aid, Spike Growth, Plant Growth, Summons.) Next time we get around to Ranger in the rotation here I think a good subclass to cover would be Fey Wanderer. It's a subclass that on it's own looks pretty meh but once you consider the interactions with base Ranger features actually comes out looking pretty neat.

I love the Drakewarden, but part of me wonders if it could be stronger. Because for most of the campaign, you're just waiting for that level 15 point. Like, when I think about playing a Drakewarden, my first question is always: are we going to reach level 15? I kind of wish it was stronger at lower levels to make it just a little more interesting up until that point. But the Drakewarden and the Fey Wanderer are the only ranger subclasses I have actually been excited to play, and wanted to use in a proper campaign.

Agreed if all you wanted was to ride a dragon get Summon Draconic Spirit and you can get that as low as level 9. But the Drakewarden can use summon spells and the ever changing dragon to have a very flexible play style as you grow. It start off as a mid to front liner running interference. Then as it grows you can use it to kite the enemy as they attack or do things like run a summon with the drake or have the drake fly and pull enemies over spiked growth. And then at 15 level you can ride it and literally be death from above as you shoot down at the enemy. It could be and should be a slight bit better but it was the first actual flying pet possibly after the Paladin superior steed so they were way conservative.

Effectively a *level 15 capstone,* yes please. That gives _5 levels_ to play with multiclassing! Either 5 full levels to get some nice benefits, or a 3 level dip into something to still get the subclass features plus two front-loaded single dips.

I'm actually a Deathwarden, a homebrew subclass very closely based on Drakewarden, to the point that it's _almost_ just a reflavour. Because it was originally intended to be a reflavour, but changing the creature type of the drake is mechanically relevant so some changes had to be made. Look, I wanted my little kobold Ranger to be undeath-themed and the mechanics of Drakewarden appealed to me. Oh yeah, the "drake" is an "undead abomination", an amalgamation of souls that crawled out of the pits of the nine hells and/or the abyss and melded together. They have multiple forms based on their elemental essence, but the most common choice is a creepy skull beetle thing with a necrotic essence. It's really cute and loves head scritchies.

Like for sure it has actual usefull features UNLIKE Horizon and Monster Slayer But i dont know if its on the same tier as Swarmkeeper with its Crowd Control(And Ranger allready have good Crowd Control with Spike Growth, Fog Cloud, and Plant Growth or Conjure Animals/Woodland Beings), Fey Wanderer making the Ranger even MORE a Skill Monkey now getting Charisma Bonuses despite being Wisdom Class(And you support the Party against and when using shutdowns), or the Gloom Stalker the GREATEST Stealth Archer Assassin by far

I like the Drakewarden but if you really want to be a dragon-riding warrior... just play a Bladesinger Wizard. You've still got magic, you can use a sword or a bow and fight from the dragon's back. How? By casting the Summon Draconic Spirit spell. It's always Large with a flying speed so you can ride it, it can share a resistance with you, and it can attack up to 4 times plus a breath attack. That breath attack doesn't scale at all for some reason, but even as a 5th level summon, it's lowest damage per turn is 22. With a 9th level spell slot, the lowest damage it can output is 58. Sure, the 10d6 breath attack is badass, but a Draconic Spirit does nearly as much damage at minimum every turn that the Drake's best attack does at maximum once per long rest. And it doesn't have to be a Bladesinger. The spell is also found on the Druid and Sorcerer list for your Wildfire Druids and Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers, plus the Bard can pick it up with magical secrets. Sadly yes, you get most of your damage from the Rend instead of the Breath Attack, but the numbers don't lie. A full caster with a draconic spirit does more damage than a Drake Companion. A level 20 Drakewarden Drake Companion's lowest damage is 9 with a bite, and 10 with a breath attack, and it can't do either multiple times per turn. If you really want a dragon, just pick up the spell. I really wish the Drake Companion was the better option, but it's not.

My drakewarden's drake flavour was wholesale shamelessly stolen from Monster Hunter but it doesn't matter because nobody in that group plays it so I just look like a creative genius. My little buddy is currently a baby tetsucabra and will very soon be a regular tetsucabra.
