One of my favorite parts about this subclass is that it actively encourages you to be the greediest wizard you can be. Between your quill's ability to copy spells in mere minutes, your desire for multiple damage types per level for you to alter your spells with, and the need for several "throwaway" spells you can sacrifice for your big "oh shit" ability, you are downright rewarded for stuffing your spellbook with as many spells as you can get your nerdy little hands on, regardless of how useful or even good those spells would usually be. Sure, every wizard dreams of getting every spell in the game, but no other subclass incentivizes you to do so quite like the Scribes Wizard. Granted, this does touch on the Scribe's biggest weakness, in that it's power level is almost entirely dm-dependant. You need to be playing with a dm that is actually willing to give you access to the spells and gold required to pad your spell list the way you like. That being said, if you find one that's willing to play ball with you, this subclass really lets you go wild

I had a concept for a Scribe wizard once using the Charlatan background. He specialized in forging documents. I mean, you have a magic quill with infinite ink and writes in any color you want (including in some Royals favorite Blue color, or a Regals Red). Not to mention, if you are able to copy a spell that normally takes hours, but you do it in minutes, imagine how fast you can copy/forge documents. Rogue: *Brings stack of stolen documents to the forger* "Forger! I need these documents copied with myself and my crew as the sole heirs, and I need them ready by tomorrow night!" Forger: "Hm, 20 pages, all in specialized colored ink." Rogue: "Well, can you do it or not?" Forger: "Oh, I can, but it'll cost you." Rogue: "Name your price." Forger: "100 gold" *rogue tossing coin pouch on the table* "Per page." Rogue: *heaves a chest of gold onto the table* "There! Remember, I need this done by..." Forger: "All done" Rogue: "Well... that was fast." Forger: "Pleasure doing business." *Snaps fingers as rogue and forged documents are shunted out of the shop."

Scribe Wizards are the most fun, even if they're just changing damage types. But when you're a Spell Attacker, you can change things into mostly Bludgeoning-type, and Piercing and Slashing for a Wizard who took Crusher, Piercer, & Slashing. Slap on three levels into Sorcerer of your choice and Metamagic Adept and bam! Seeking Spells like homing Missiles.

If the world of DnD _was real_ and not a game that is *carefully balanced* to make it "fair," then Scribes Wizard would be the best and safest class. DM's generally won't steal or destroy your spellbook because it's such a disaster, and it completely nerfs the players' Wizard character. *But life is not like that.* Every other Wizard subclass must be paranoid every time they sleep and are terrified of theft. There would be specialists rogues that target spellbooks, either to resell to Wizards who don't have those spells or for commission to take down a rival. Don't like a particular Wizard - Hire "that guy" to really take down their power level, even a Bladesinger would be in trouble if their spellbook disappeared or was destroyed out of combat. And of course, there's always targeting an enemy Wizards spellbook in combat.... As a Wizard need to drop everything and run? Well, your spellbook effectively has hidden cloud storage backup. Now, being captured and having all your possessions taken isn't such a disaster to your magical career. This is especially useful with the Clone spell. For other Wizards unless you want to go to the _expense_ and time of creating a complete copy of your spellbook and leaving it next to your Clone jar (and what about new spells learnt since then?), coming back from the dead might still be very detrimental to your health. Imagine you had problems with a (non scribes) Wizard? It's the most obvious but effective move that doesn't include murder... Until they're now weak enough to be killed. *Wizard horror story:* Your spellbook is gone.
@theuncalledfor8 ай бұрын
Fabricate solves the time issue of copying a spellbook. The gold cost remains, however. Note that wizards do not need calligraphy proficiency to transcribe spells, and in fact gain no benefit from it, so the rule about high-craftsmanship items does not apply. You are "proficient" in transcribing spells just by being a wizard.

Because it's so quick and easy to copy new spells into your spellbook, having a whole bunch of _pointless spells_ in your book to temporarily "burn" for *One With the Word* with at most 18 levels of spells that you don't care about being unavailable for up to a week. All those spells you never use, they're now an insurance policy. So any spell you don't have has a potential use, and considering you can copy a 9 level spell in 18 minutes, taking a short rest gives you the opportunity to copy 30 levels worth of spells from another Wizards book. Go for the entire Wizard spell table......
@Cassapphic8 ай бұрын
You do still have to pay gold to do this so its not entirely free, even if by this level gold should not be in short supply.

I had a fire genasi Scribes wizard once, and while unfortunately the campaign fell apart before I could play him for long, his main gimmick was that he would mostly cast fire spells, but with different damage types as the situation required. This is probably one of my favorite subclasses just because of the sheer versatility, but like you said, it's very DM-dependent. If I have a wizard in the party, I'll always give out spell scrolls, let them swap spells with friendly wizards, take the spellbook of defeated enemy wizards, etc...

This is my favorite subclass with wizards being my favorite class. With your uber shield, the more spells you learn the more powerful it is. Since you choose what spells get used to block the damage, you are uighly incentivized to copy even normally useless scrolls. Or spells your character wouldn't ever use, like animate dead for example. This subclass fits wizards SO well it naturally makes you better at being a wizard.
@theuncalledfor8 ай бұрын
Why wouldn't you use Animate Dead? I mean sure, it would, depending on the setting, shift your alignment to evil, but there are no mechanical consequences for that. And it's not like those people are using their bodies any more.
