In this video, Instructor Zero details why simply "checking left and right" in a methodical fashion is only a range drill and not adequate in a reality contest. While some may argue that routinely scanning after each discharge builds muscle memory that breaks tunnel vision, this has not proven to be the case under stress in real life deadly force encounters. In fact, Instructor Zero argues that it is a waste of time to do this each and every time during training as it wastes valuable time and energy in a training regiment where individual skills are trained.

In firearms training, scanning your environment immediately after a shooting has gone the way of the office "how ya doin?" We do it instinctively without giving it much thought and we do it without meaning. While muscle memory has its benefits in certain aspects of training, building incorrect muscle memory can be a disservice to progress.
As an example, when you are at the range working on your extraction, it detracts from the technical learning process. When working on accuracy, it becomes a monotonous futile exercise that serves no real purpose when sh!t hits the fan.

Gives him the credibility he deserves because he acknowledges that even with a metric F-ton of training, in a hairy situation it can be very challenging to keep all of that stuff together.

Your material is presented in a very fundamental, explanation based way that says "Look this part works for this, now find a way to use it in other applications. Great point made. As an 8532, providing technical application to my Marines come clearly out of a book. However, personal and battlefield experience is where you make your money. I always understood the reason for lateral checks but didn't agree with such. Instructor Zero clearly defined and presented a more realistic alternative.

I took Tactical Response Fighting Pistol in January. We did muzzle-up 360 degree scans, but I found that I wasn't really paying attention when I was doing it. As the class went on, I tried to focus more on the 2nd line behind me. It didn't sink in until I got home and started dry practicing it, where there wasn't anyone behind me. I started mentally noting objects behind me, just to pay attention. From there, I went to a public exercise that's helped immensely. When I'm out and about now, I try and take note of what people are wearing and identifying 1 piece of cover/concealment and 1 additional exit. As taught, scans should involve 3 things: Bad guys, good guys and somewhere to go. What you scan is as important as how you scan. You can't do it with a head shake at the range. Good video!

Aka "high alert" position, it can be useful is some situations, such as working in the aft position behind a partnet, but definitely not a "silly movie thing". However, I was always taught to never allow my opponent the luxury of a moment where he doesnt feel the pressure of my muzzle on him, even if he's down. My scans are conducted accordingly, even if I have to collapse into more of a chest-ready position to do it, kind of like what he does in the video. Just my two cents...

Great info. We train to scan for 2 reasons. To break tunnel vision and to identify additional threats front back side to side and back on the threat you just shot because he might still be alive. I'm glad to see zero mention that shooters should be looking for cover even though we rarely train to do so on the range. CirusDaVirus3 I've trained with the US Army Airborne and Marines. In both cases, they scanned their surroundings the same as we did, which includes checking your six. If the guys behind you are dead, how can they watch your tail? Situational awareness means knowing your entire surroundings. Scanning and breathing is done once your engaged targets are neutralized, not just a couple rounds fired at them like paper targets. That being said, I do agree, these lone wolf internet experts have no idea what they are talking about. Even SOF operators act in teams, and often with even more appreciation for their squad mates than anyone thinks.

I practice The Wyatt Principle. F.A.S.T = Fight-Asses-Scan-Top Off. I learned that from Yeager. "Fight": I have made the decision to fight. "Assess": Do I need to fight anymore? "Scan": 360 degrees. Do I need to fight anyone else? "Top Off": have a fully loaded gun...just in case.

Everything is situational. In a training line you should avoid sweeping the other students and instructors with the muzzle of your firearm. People tend to be offended when you point your gun at them. Go figure. Hence the muzzle up method used in most group training scenarios is really about the safety of those around you and avoiding making them angry by sweeping them with your muzzle. In a real world situation, I must trust you have my back and you must trust I have yours so better for us to muzzle sweep each other than to lose the precious milliseconds getting our guns to the horizontal where they can be brought to bear on a threat. But statistically, the odds are probably greater an individual would incur an training accident than an actual gun fight. So training safely should be given the highest priority. Perhaps trainers should add an exercise where blue plastic guns are used instead of real firearms so that the method Instructor Zero is describing can be practiced safety because it definitely has many advantages in the real world than muzzle up scans. As to how the military does things... in any real world chaotic scenario from EMP power outage to to civil unrest and riots, expect all variety of skill levels of other good people to be around you will need to work with. Then factor in they are probably hungry, thirsty, sleep deprived as well as being emotionally distraught, mind numb and not thinking clearly or able to move efficiently. Even those with prior military training will not be functioning anywhere near military expectations. Now those precious milliseconds of delays turn into seconds of delay when there are only two possible outcomes: the quick, and the dead.

There is a special kind of glasses for rock climbers that have prisms in it so that you can look 90 Degrees upwards wihtout breaking your neck. azntactical and that's why so many people in your country suck at handling firearms. In weapons training in the military, you always cleared your firearm before picking it up, then for inspection so the instructor knew they were clear. Even still, there is a safe direction for pointing your weapon, and no one other than the instructor walks in front of them, and he only does if necessary. Proper demonstrations are done from both sides, so that the trainees can see both angles. There is no need to point a firearm at students.

Cynical Texas Dad: really? You do no think the weapon was checked and EVERYONE on the range agreed that it was cleared. When I attended weapons training where the instructor need to point the weapon towards the students for teaching purposes, a cleaning rod was run through the broken open M16 and the well was checked prior to proceeding. Done once with the weapon never leaving the hands of the instructor.

Good points made in the video. I practice, after drawing--checking right, left, and deep six. I believe it is still helpful to get in that habit of checking your surroundings--it helps, somewhat, to avoid tunnel vision, as when your eyes are locked on the front threat that you have neutralized. But it would be good, also, if one practices more movement towards cover--like Instructor Zero demonstrated. Very helpful video.

I always assumed that you were doing that kind of rear clearance to compensate for the limits of your field of view that can change with the gear you are wearing. Finally someone pointing it out. I hate when I see a video and the "instructor" looks left than right. As a vet, I myself am constantly looking all around figuring who could be a threat, all exits, areas of protection, etc. Funker makes really awesome videos. Keep up the awesome training sir.

I respect the fact that not all techniques work in all situations. But, to have options in the Rolodex is a good thing. Practical application doesn't always work on a square range (where most training takes place for most folks) with other participants on the line.

im no beginner and not an advanced infantry man, but learning these skills are essential for surviving.. Fight as you train and train as you fight.. Teach others how to shoot move grouve and communicate, and you can feed them for life.. thnkx for the info.
