If you are looking to elevate your fishing game and tactics, there is no better way than to adopt the BFS way. BFS stands for "bait finesse system". This way of fishing has been practiced by the Japanese for a long time. Now, it is finally making its way to the United States.
I talk about the recommended lines I like to use to hook into big inshore saltwater fish with ultra light (BFS) lures. Fishing line is something that is often overlooked and never thought of. Today, I'm going to show you why you need to change that way of thinking.

After using Trilene XL mono and Power pro braid for decades now but I tried Varivas a few months ago and I'm very impressed. A lot of great colors and strengths. The only negative is the learning curve. Varivas is much thinner than the U.S. market in diameter. Make sure to check the Line chart at Varivas fishing website. For instance, There #1 gauge braid may say 20LB. but it's actually equivalent to 8 LB. Power pro and their 1.5 gauge is actually equivalent to around 10LB. power pro. The same applies with their Nylon/Mono. Most of their 6LB. is equivalent to 4LB U.S. mono in diameter. Initially I made the mistake of buying 4 and 5LB mono that was just too thin. Great lines but I just wanted you to know how to learn the easy way; not the hard way like I did.

The 8 is how many strand the braid is and the 1,1.5 and so on is the PE line rating. Awesome line.

Love Varivas. I've caught a 22" striper and a 6lbs trout on the 3lbs Trout Advance on a BFS rig and handled both fish like a charm. I have tried more affordable lines and as of last week i have learned my lesson and moving forward I will only use Varivas and P-Line for all my reels.

Yep, we couldn't agree more! 🙂 VARIVAS Max Power PE x8 in lime green, and it's sibling models Avani SeaBass Max Power, and Avani Casting Max Power PE, along the new VARIVAS 4 and 8 are excellent all-purpose braided line models. VARIVAS Shock Leader "Sea Bass" model is a thinner model of shock leader, great for inshore, saltwater fishing; while our standard fluoro and mono shock leader lines are great all-purpose models for open water. When fishing heavy structure, our "VEP nylon" models of lines and leaders are top notch with 20x the abrasion resistance of standard nylon.

I would start with 1.5 or 2.0 guage and go down when you get the feel for it.

You're right about needing to know and understand the how Gou gauge, diameter, and break strength correlate when it comes to JDM lines. And how JDM line rating specs compare to USDM lines. VARIVAS JDM (Japan domestic market) line is super thin, yet carries a strong weight load compared to most fishing line sold for the U.S. market (USDM). VARIVAS lines are about 30~40% thinner than USDM lines. For example: gou/gauge #1 (20 lb) VARIVAS 8 braid and Max Power PE x8 braided lines are comparable in diameter to several popular U.S. domestic market brands of 8~12 lb braid. Important to keep in mind regarding break strength of JDM lines is (1) that line break strength to Gou rating is specific to each model of line and (2) that the break strength listed on the package of VARIVAS JDM line is the MAXIMUM break strength, unlike most USDM lines that break well over the lb. size they list.

@@varivas_america I've been trying to understand how JDM PE line is rated and was still very confused. I believe I know now how to choice what size braid will suite my needs. Never really thought about diameter vs break strength when it came to line capacity. Also the package labeling of JDM vs USDM was something I never knew about.

Thanks. Im about to make my order on digitaka for 2 new jdm reels and wanted to add some line but understanding the like is like learning Japanese. Ive narrowed down the reels... menatanium , zillion , scorpion dc.... One will go on my suppressor 7' L and one on my 6'5" Aerius ML. Any input on which 2?

Great choices in reels. I would go Metanium and zillion. Zillion for light action and Metanium for ML. Get the 1.5 guage varivas line for both.

So I am trying to get into BFS. So far I all I have is a Zephyr, and I have been able to get it casting 1/16 jigs on Yo-Zuri 8 pound hybrid mono. I will most likely get more reels soon. My question is on the Varivas Max Power X8. From the specs it seems thinner that 4 pound mono. Is it as soft? I plan to try different types through my upcoming bfs setups, but I am also an ultralight spinning guy too. From what I can tell the Max Power 8 is the thinnest all around braid.

Yes, it’s very thin. I can’t say if it’s softer than your hybrid mono. It’ll work well for your ultralight and BFS applications.

Why should he stop? Varivas is one of the few brands that provides braided lines that have approximately the declared thickness, power pro and others are twice as big than the declared diameter, so it makes sense to compare it. Because you pay more, but for a reason. Once you use vari as or other top brands is basically impossible to go back to power pro tbh
