Pursuit of Meaning

2 жыл бұрын

In this video, Jordan B Peterson predicates what you should do before quitting your job.
Make a strategy, speak up your mind, see if you can solve anything, but first, you must find better options where you could go if you decide to leave...so, be prepared, be thoughtful.
"So you think, well, why should you speak up? That's easy!
Because the consequences of not speaking up, although delayed, are far worse."

The exhausting part is what's getting to me. I don't need the ego stroke nor do I have a fragile ego but at work a member of the management team that I work with is HORRIBLE! It's so draining on the days that this person is there because they are very disruptive, loud, boastful, threatening, and has expressed on several occasions they don't care. I've witnessed and experienced bullying, gaslighting, lying, threats of violence, belittling staff and then referring to it as banter... I've worked since a teen and in various environments and this person is the worst that I've worked with. A narcissist in denial but has admitted to having some traits. Either way this person is horrible at management and has created a chaotic and at times hostile work environment for me. Others that I call their flying monkies all laugh at EVERYTHING this person says and does...I don't so I'm the oddball in the office. At times this person has been repulsive even to me. I know that I won't be at the job long term...not dealing with this and people that want to change me. I go in to get my check and keep the peace that God gave me and to go home that's it. I care not to be part of the crew.

I was in the situation where my boss was abusive, dishonest and denigrating everybody in his group, destroying their reputations within the company. He was particularly abusive towards me. He was shocked when my lawyer's letter arrived, placing them in a difficult situation as it is illegal to terminate someone in Australia for getting legal representation. Six months later I provoked them into firing me to take them to court as I knew there was no future in that company. It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees. The boss was sacked afterwards, JUSTICE ! My income doubled in the first year out, then quadrupled. I made more in the next 10 years than I would have in 40 years had I not had the courage to fight back. I have now run my own businesses for 13 years, not always easy but it is freedom.

Please tell me more about using legal representation to protect your reputation at work. Your country probably has different laws to mine, but it should be universal (I'm from the Netherlands). Well done. So happy it worked out for you and it just shows your character. I was a manager in a bank in South Africa and the bosses do this subtle thing where they want you to cheat customers to make sales. So in a meeting with 80 managers I am the only one that said it was wrong and unethical. Especially in the financial industry you have to have high ethics but it's also something in your soul. So that was it. Nobody backed me. They all cheated the customers and I went home and told my husband I am resigning. I was 52 so had no backup plan but invested my pension and with some of the money started a home business. I coach people on health, diet and weightloss. It stumbled upon this and developed it along the way. Am 60 this year and am downscaling to working part-time. I have a stress free life (except in Dec when everyone wants to be thin), I am my own boss, I am not rich but I make enough money to maintain myself. I had cancer during my time at the bank and my husband believes it was extreme stress. Terrible going to work and you are threatened every day. Those bosses are all still there and I believe the place is still toxic.

I did my job so exceptionally well that me leaving made other people who were already hanging on a thread leave as well due to having to compensate for all the work I was accomplishing on my own. Now the job has 50% less workers. And they’re slowly going under and whoever is left is being overworked.

It's a sad fact of human nature that if you do a good job, there will be haters, because when you do a good job it shows up all the people who are not working hard, it shows what they are made of. It shows how fragile their position and existance within the structure is. Rather than hard, they would much rather pull you down. Manipulation and control are huge. Ever heard of the Pereto effect my spelling might be off?? (100% of the work is done by 20% of the people within any given company).

If you walk away from a conversation with someone at work feeling totally confused (this is a big one) OR feeling way "lower" than them (less smart, less cultured, less sophisticated, less worthy, less important, less powerful, less capable, etc), ASSUME they're toxic and limit contact with them. It's more about going with how you feel than what you think, if you want to build a "radar" system for this junk. I say "junk" because people who use tactics to lower the esteem of someone or intentionally confuse them are literally garbage people. I don't care how much money they have, if they can't treat people right and see them as humans, they belong in a trash colony among their own type. 🙂

If that isn't bad enough I have to deal with having to remake things multiple times because my coworkers handed out the wrong things. Alot of times I feel like they do it on purpose either for some sick entertainment purposes or as their feeble minded attempt to make it seem like I'm fucking up. I still hear people talking about me behind my back which used to really bother me but recently I realized that it doesn't really matter, as I couldn't care less anymore what people who I barely know think about me. I don't associate with any of them outside of the workplace so they don't really know me. As for the orders having to be remade multiple times that's stopped for the most part. It happens occasionally but I put that down to people being human and accidents happening as opposed to a few months ago when it would happen about 5 times every 5 minutes ( which definitely was coworkers fucking with me but those coworkers are either gone or have just given that game up) I still think about leaving literally every day but I stick it out simply because I'm relatively sure the BS will just follow me to the next job just like it followed me to this one. Maybe someday the group that's made it their mission to fuck with me on every conceivable level will give up, maybe they realize I've done nothing to them that warrants their constant psychological attacks but that would require a few people to grow a conscious and that'll probably never happen as I get the feeling they're paid to engage in their shinanigans.

I just left my hospital as an RN who has been there for over 4 years. In that time, I have received my CHPN and been involved in three committees. The work I am most proud of is joining the Comfort Care Committee and working with pharmacy, providers, SW, and the nursing department to elevate our end of life care to current evidence based best practices. I am passionate about this because my father passed away 6 years ago from brain cancer and Hopsice was such a help to us it was beyond measure. I put together educational presentations regarding EOL for nursing staff as the turnover has been high. Anyhow, the CNO and HR are friends and they have made it clear that their loyalties lie for the dollar and for each other only- as a charge nurse for the past year and a half, I have been unsupported and gaslighted for making professional decisions regarding staffing for safe and humane care for our patients and nurses and support staff in both the ER and the floor. We are a small hospital. Neither of these individuals has acknowledged once the work I have done. In fact all I have heard is “how much time did you spend on that presentation?”. I feel inside my body a peace from the decision I have made to leave this toxic work environment a month ago. My last shift is in a day. Leaving the stability and relationships I have made in other departments is difficult; but, it is time to take my passion for science and compassionate care to a different environment.

I had to leave work about 1.5 hours ago and found myself here, looking for confirmation that it is not me that is the problem. My coworker has had it out for me since he started and the micromanager who has been in new role (first time being a manager) for one month has made my work environment so toxic. Belittling me to no end. I am a grown woman 25 yrs with the bank and I ended up with anxiety and crying today. I had to leave for my own health. I have kept quiet for so long now. This is the same bank where the manager at that time told the temporary worker to cover while I was unexpectedly ill, that I would not be back because I had cancer ( oh really? I am survived it) it is never ending and I am feeling bullied and defeated.

I suspect because of fear of failure, seeing that nothing works as expected. I am contemplating resigning without another job lined up, as almost my entire team already did. Managers scream at employees, blame them for their own failure. It's a really bad situation. I can probably survive 6-12 months without a job. I need the courage to do it.

Bottom line is it bacame like HS. You had to speak a certain way act a certain way. Keep people motivated to work . Find out what employees are not doing their work etc. what was frustrating is higher management would be to scared to fire people etc. I couldn't be there, I was used to men that got to work and did what we had to do everyday. Lost my job at Amazon when I spoke up at a company meeting where they were on stage telling us why they'd be paying the new workers more than us and why we had to accept it. When I spoke out against them, the entire crowd cheered and applauded my question. They didn't say a thing. They quickly found a reason to get rid of me. They called it 'choosing to end our worker-company relationship' I said 'So I'm fired? Just say I'm fired.' They were like 'We're choosing not to say it like that.' People are legit fcked up in the head these days. Also recently had a coworker who's been snapping on me, and it got to the point where it's affecting my ability to do my job. Told the boss that I can't be second guessing myself at doing my job and she said she would be talking to the person who's doing it. The girl's a piece of trailer trash who thinks we're friends or something weird like that and that she has the right to talk to me like that. I have no idea what it is and I'm not even going to pretend like I know. Called her on it the first time she yelled at me I calmly said 'Who are you talking to?' she quickly folded and apologized. It's so hard to find a decent job with decent coworkers these days. Might go back to working for people like friends of mine that own their own businesses.

I have suffered insomnia for months because of this unfair treatment. The other day, I was walking outside the venue with friends , my former boss walked towards me with his family. As soon as he noticed me, he turned away and disappeared like a coward. Bullies don't voluntarily stop bullying because they know they can escape the consequences of it. I started a new job this month and am enjoying it with good people. There is a saying , when one door shuts, another opens. For your own sake, sometimes you have to close the door yourself.
