This is sooo good. Thank you Carlin. I have struggled with understanding note value and placement on the kit. I have wondered why some of my crashes just sounded off or in the wrong place. I can see clearly now. "Nothing is hard, just unfamiliar!" - Carlin Maccular

This is crazy. You know, I didn’t even realize I’ve been doing this for quite some time. I picked up this principle in high school Jazz. I was trying to play big and my conductor told me that the big cymbals weee washing everything out; he told me to substitute tom or hi-hat hits in for some of those to space out and clean up the phrasing. 🔥🔥🔥 ESPECIALLY when recording. Too much cymbals will wash out the fills. Thanks for putting a name to this for me bro!!!

That’s it man. That’s the thought behind this lesson. If you’re playing something like Rock music, it’s a different story. This may not matter as much in that genre but yeah man you got it!

The transitions and loose phrasing with a serious side of pocket!!! I love how you stay on your snare through every fill…accenting the 2&4….on the 16th note fills…the e&a accents are fire!!! Appreciate you sharing this!!!

Love your ending , brother, where you emphasized playing the notes and going long or short..I might add, going soft or loud, too! I hear too many drummers that just play LOUD! So there are no dynamics to their sound, which is sad as in many worship songs, volume dynamics can make or break a song, and too many gospel drummers just want to play rock loud to be heard...Keep up the great worship drumming, Bro! :-)

1:19 Could you show us how to do this improvisation? I think it's very difficult to place inside between the bars. I appreciate!
@carlinmuccular Жыл бұрын
It requires a strong sense of timing. As long as you know where “beat one” is in a measure, you’ll always be ok. This is a more advance training that I’ll probably share in my drumming school once it opens in May.

This is a interesting concept. I feel it could maybe cause some overthinking or confusion by advancing drummers, I think these are good tips for adding some flavor but shouldn't be used as a guideline for how you play overall. Any note length can be played on any part of the instrument by the timing you hit the next note, also with learning how to control things like dynamics and how much force you are using.
@carlinmuccular Жыл бұрын
Yes. I actually mentioned that in the video. This is not to be used as a “strict rule” but as a guideline. Depending on what style of music you play, this can vary in importance. I personally play a lot of Gospel music with staccato lines and phrases as in this drumless track I’m playing. This concept matters in the gospel genre greatly. Maybe not so much in rock or something else.

Just wondering why almost all your phrasing is linear?? No disrespect but almost all gospel drummers sound the same to me because your painting with one or 2 colors out of the whole pallet...
@carlinmuccular Жыл бұрын
No disrespect taken man, it’s all good! That’s kinda like asking why do jazz players keep their left foot going? It’s a part of the genre. To directly answer your question though, linear drumming is simply what the Gospel genre requires. I’m actually on a few Grammy nominated and Billboard #1 records so I’ve tested this out a just little bit 😉. Essentially all drummers sound alike in a given genre, Traditonal Jazz, 80’s rock, Country etc. There is a certain pocket and drum fill that fits every genre. Same with gospel music. 👍🏽
