If you've never heard of a long shotgun microphone before then you need to hear what they can do for you! You know what a short shotgun microphone is even if you've only ever heard of them as "shotgun mics" before but a long shotgun mic is a powerful tool you can use to extract audio from far away.
Around the world people have heard of Rode Microphones but few people I've spoken to even knew Rode made the NTG-8 long shotgun microphone. With reach and rejection you have to hear to believe, get ready for an awesome example of what this microphone can do for you.
Rycote is known for having a huge selection of acoustically transparent wind protection options and has such an extensive catalog that there's at least one wind protection option for every shotgun microphone in the world. Even the NTG-8 has it's own special model number of Rycote Windjammer, the WS-11.
In this video I show you exactly why you need a long long shotgun microphone but one thing you might not think about is the fact that you heard no wind hit the microphone. That's because the WS-11 was doing it's job so well, you didn't even think about it.

Have you used other long shotgun mics? I wonder how the NTG-8 compares in your opinion.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 жыл бұрын
Of course! I've used the Sennheiser MKH-816 and 70 (I've heard the 8070 but never used on a set so I'm not counting that) and the Neumann KMR-82i. I think the NTG-8 is right up with them. The 82 sounds more natural and has greater detail at a few feet of but gets thin if too far away. The 816 and 70 are similar but I like the detail and sound of the 70 a bit more even if it's borderline muddy at closer distances. The 70 has that MKH overly bass boosted sound until you get it far away then it sounds more natural although at that distance, it's losing a bit of detail. The NTG-8 is a little more bass boosted than I prefer but sounds good at 8 feet. I have a feeling that it start falling off in detail slightly earlier than the others when you get really far away but you likely wouldn't use it at those distances anyway. That's unconfirmed because I didn't A/B/C/D them. The farther it goes, the frequencies remain natural and can become a bit imbalanced in some circumstances. One example is my angled in intro in my sealing electronics video. It sounds overly bassy because of the reverb of my loud voice off my house. I'm not sure any other long shotgun would have done much better though because it was likely a tough situation for a long shotgun.

I owned this mic and sadly never used it. Standard boom mics like NTG3, MKH 416 or cardioids inside were the way to go for nearly every project. On most projects I had to be ready and fast all the time, so not really time for switching mics or trying different setups. If I had to be far away I just used lavalier mics. Would be great to hear how other sound persons are using mics like this on sets.

Just bought an NTG8 myself - what a great mic so quiet in fact it is quieter than my already great MKH416. Only think is I feel as if MKH416 is a tad brighter (even though their Frequency Response curve is near identical) - like you said earlier every mic is different.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds Жыл бұрын
Frequency responses aren't to be trusted by themselves, trust your ears. Most frequency impulse response charts are measured at a distance of 1 meter away and from there, many micros sound similar. Get them close, where you use them, and they sound different. A 416 will sound better than an NTG8 within a couple of feet for sure.

If you watched Walking Dead season 8 episode 1, when Rick and company are talking to Negan at the Sanctuary, almost all of Negan's dialogue on that platform were done about 6-9 feet away from his mouth on an MKH-70. Sure thing. I think the 816 will do well out there. It's not just about rejection (or the CMIT 5U wouldn't be as popular or sound as good), it's about how the mic sounds down the barrel balanced with the world around it. @SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 жыл бұрын
Rycote makes the Duck Rain jacket but it's only decently effective where it's hit by rain (it does make a sound) and the Windshield Rain Jacket (which is for between takes - not to be worn while recording) but my favorite is still the Cinela Pia-Kelly. Designed to work only with Cinela Piano and Pianissimo zeppelin's, it is the best on the market in my opinion especially if you use the water repellant spray. Remote Audio also makes the Rainman, a cotton tube that slips over your zepp while recording. It does a decent job but fills up with water and gets heavy. It also changes the sound a bit by only keeping open the front lobe. Not a huge deal though because of all the sound you'd be hearing from the rain though. There may be others but those are the ones I know and have used.

I've used it many times. If you get some water repellant spray and spray it down once over your zeppelin, it'll do as well as possible. Between setups you might take it off and squeeze it out. It can soak up a lot of water.

@@SoundSpeeds its quite amazing @15-30feet it still sounds great directly from above, so was quite curious how does it sound like, say walking 3,6,9 feet 1 side from middle with audio recordings (then draft a cone with db/frequency drop) just to know the cut off limits.

Since you’ve used quite a few long shotguns before, I’m just curious about your opinion on the MKH-70. I just got a great deal on one and am going to use it for wildlife recording, specifically birds. How’s the distance/rejection on this bad boy?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 9 ай бұрын
It's pretty good. Not as directional as a CS3e but for wildlife, it'll do very well. Low noise floor,b directional and because of the extended bass, far away sounds will sound more full. You'll like it.

Clever review. Nice move getting sound from asphalt parking lot reflection. If only it would work so well in standard boom configurations. I have NTG-8 and 3. Both with proper Rode/Rycote blimps. They're nearly identical, very deep. NTG-3 about 5% hotter signal. NTG-8 a bit less noise. Hard to pack that 8, but worth it when needed. Thanks for the... interesting... "angle". Clever indeed. Much much much cheaper blimp option with Proaim BMP60R Pro Long Blimp Microphone Windscreen www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1555393-REG/proaim_bmp_60r_bmp60_r_pro_long.html

@@SoundSpeeds I've never used it either. I have the proper Rycote blimp for NTG-8. Jeez it's expensive. Combined with the mic, nearly $1700 USD. I can't believe they gave you both products. Good on you man. Another cheaper option is get the standard Rode Blimp, then get the $68 extension kit and make the same thing. Upgrade the lyres to the dual 72's for another $70 for pair. Still way cheaper than the Rycote kit. And it's the same thing.
