You Need A Sketchbook - My Seven Minute Challenge, is a call to artists and creatives of all types to draw more and loosen up.
I was never really one to have a sketchbook. Heck I rarely do drawing for myself these days. I remember doing fast charcoal figure drawings years ago in art classes during my teenage years and thought the process would be great to help me today. Little did I know it was going to be addictive.
At the time of making this video, I am just five days into my "Seven Minute Challenge" and I have thought about so many sketchbook ideas because I'm having such a great time with it. I can see myself on vacation and taking no less than 30 minutes a day to draw something based on the location, and 10 minutes at each place I visit. I'm starting to think of my sketchbook the way I would a small camera to document the world around me.
The side effect of all of this is improving my ability to draw quickly, make fast decisions about shape, value, and composition. I also think it loosens me up a bit, and may be helping me draw in a more painterly style. The Seven Minute Challenge is like my daily warmup before working on a new drawing or painting - I love it.
If you'd like to play along, you can join at any time since this challenge has no official start or stopping dates. The concept is really about how long one can go daily before missing a day.
Here's how to play along:
1. Get a new sketchbook and call it your 7 day Challenge book. That way it will act like a record of your progress without being cluttered by anything else. I use a mix media 60 page 5.5 x 8.5 inch Canson ringed book. Find it here - amzn.to/2zpFeTn
2. Find a good ballpoint ink pen. I use a Zebra F-301. Find them here - amzn.to/2O2ZYbK
3. Date your pages and number them as you go. If you miss a day, your next day back to the challenge starts with number one again. There is no failing, you just want to see how many days in a row you can keep it going. If you quit, try going longer the next time.
4. Draw for 7 minutes. If you get done early, keep drawing, if you don't get done...well, that's normal, put the pen down and wait for the next day.
5. This one is optional, but if you have a Twitter account and/or an Instagram account hashtag your drawings so we can all share. The hashtag is #7minChallenge
I hope you enjoyed this video and I'd love for you to join me in the 7 minute challenge.
