You Need These Ultimate Xbox Controllers!! Retro Fighters Hunter

In this episode, we unbox and test out what could be the ultimate controller for the Original Xbox, The Hunter wireless controller from Retro Fighters.
Almost a year ago, I had the chance to test out and provide feedback for a then-unannounced controller from Retro Fighters. Robert and company had produced controllers for Sega and Nintendo systems, even Playstation. But this was something totally different being a controller for the original Xbox. Named the Hunter, this introduces some amazing features for the system. Built-in rumble, wireless communication, and even Hall Effect sensors are all under the hood. The Hunter is also compatible, not only with the original Xbox, but also PC and the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED.
Out of the box, the Hunter includes 2 wireless dongles, one for the Xbox and one USB dongle. This is necessary due to the fact instead of using Bluetooth it uses 2.4GHz technology instead. One cool feature that Retro Fighters has added to the USB dongle for the Hunter is to actually label it as the dongle for the Hunter. This sounds dumb but as I have so many of these dongles this will make it easier for me to identify it down the road.
To charge the controller, Retro Fighters provides a USB-A to USB-C cable. Charging should take about 2 1/2 hours from completely dead and it should last about 10 hours per-charge. That's pretty impressive and I have to say that those are pretty accurate numbers.
To get things rolling, literally, I turned to a few suggestions from Jay from Square Pegs. First up was RallySport Challenge, a game Jay had recommended and I picked up a few months back. I've not had a chance to play it, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. As soon as I squeezed the trigger the rumble kicked in. Man, this was powerful! I was able to get the holeshot and ran in the top 2 for a bit, before I stoped overacheiving and ran out of luck. I quickly crashed as I overshot a corner, ran off track, and even accidently hit the reset button while looking for the camera button. However, this felt great! The steering, throttle, and brakes all felt smooth and precise.
Up next was Spider-Man for the Xbox, another game I have had for some time but not played before. The controls felt a bit wonky here, almost like a hybrid between regular and tank controls. Just playing the tutorial I can see potential, but not sure this is going to be that great of a game.
What is a great game, however, is Crimson Skies. I was blown away when I first played it and love getting behind the control stick anytime I can. The Hall Effect sensors really stood out here as the precise movements and inputs were represented perfectly on-screen. I was able to fly though tight areas that I could have been overwhelmed by, but instead navigated through perfectly. The rumble, again, was very good in this game as it was in the previous games.
Next up, I connected the USB dongle to my Nintendo Switch Dock, tapped the pairing button, and was up and playing in no-time. The first game I tested was the 30th Anniversary Super Street Figher. I started, as I always do, with the Analog stick as that's how I prefer to play Street Fighter. I was happy to discover that I was able to pull off all of the moves with Ryu with the analog stick. I normally struggle against T. Hawk, but I was able to battle him well and win the first round. The 2nd round I tried the D-Pad, which was good, but not as good for me as the Analog Stick. I did have some issues pulling off the dragon uppercut, where I had no such issues with the analog stick. To win the bout I switched back to the analog stick, and took the win.
The final test was playing Super Mario Wonder, and man, I love this game. The Hunter controller performed perfectly in this test, as was to be expected. Button presses felt great, as did the rumble yet again. Overall the Hunter performed ideally throughout all of my tests, and I couldn't have been much happier.

Should you buy one?
The Hunter is one of the finest controllers that Retro Fighters has ever produced. The overall build quality and quality is nothing short of excellent. As someone who does not care for the original Xbox controllers, the Hunter is something which will encourage me to play the Xbox even more, similar to the Striker DC and the Dreamcast. I am so glad to get my hands on the production version and cannot wait for more to be able to test it out for themselves.

Ive emailed RF and they got back to me: a firmware update in the next 2-3 weeks will allow black and white button functionality on PC. I did not get any other details as to if that's just going to mirror LB & RB or allow full remapping capabilities, but im so glad i asked them. They're working on it so just sit tight gamers.

I still have two functional Logitech wireless controllers. The 'dongle' is a base with two mem card slots on a cord. Looks tacky but plays great. If you have one, how does the Retro Fighters controller compare?

Looks like the word "HUNTER" is on the USB receiver. I have a feeling the wireless technology will be the V2 just like the StrikerDC. Unfortunately I was unable to get the wireless StrikerDC to work on the GameCube, Switch or PC, and same can be said with the other wireless RF controllers on the Dreamcast. I mainly wanted the Hunter so I can see if it will work with the Defender's receiver. If this trick does not work, I will buy two more BattlerGCs to complete my 4-player setup with all 360-style PS2 controller solutions. If the mix-and-match trick works however, I can consider buying more PS2 controller converters for my Xbox 360, Xbox One and Series X to allow the Hunters to be used with these systems.

I got a black one from Stone Age gamers! Havnt used it but off the back I feel like the dpad isn’t good. When you push down the center the whole thing goes down. A good dpad should rock. It’s gonna make some home brew disappointing to play.

What would be awesome is if the Retro Fighters dongle would work with official Series controllers. Yes I know there is a Brook Wingman but mine frequently disconnects and have tried a few different firmwares. It works perfectly in wired mode though. 8BitDo or RetroBit need to make an OG Xbox dongle.

@@RoXolidThe signal machines at the start of the race tells the racers when the race actually starts. I was referring to the signal machine's sounds. They sound almost exactly as the ones found on early Initial D arcade games. If you are unfamiliar with Initial D, it is a multimedia franchise themed after mountain-based street racing, and centers on an 18-year-old high school student who spends his life as a gas station worker, a tofu-delivery driver for his family's tofu company, and as a nighttime street racer.

12:44 This isn't a good sign. Makes me think that White and Black would be duplicates of LB and RB, but it's a possibility they're Turbo and Clear buttons in disguise. I remember on the BattlerGC and BladeGC that the Capture button is actually a Clear button in disguise, and I must press Capture when playing PS one and PS2 games to disable Turbo. Not to mention the White and Black buttons are also called the "T" and "C" buttons for a reason. T is in "white" while C is in "black" after all, but the "T" and "C" can also mean Turbo and Clear. I played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X and found out the pause menu passwords refer to White and Black as "T" and "C".

If you buy the Defender and the Brook PS2-to-Xbox One controller adapter, you can use the Hunter with the Xbox One or Series X. That, or buy a Wingman XB2 to save some time and money. Honestly, I haven't tried using a Hunter with a Defender's receiver, but if I give it a test only for it to fail due to the V2 wireless technology, then I suggest you get the Wingman XB2 instead.

Well, I like their ideas, like redesigning the N64 controller to that of an iQue gamepad or a Hori Mini N64 Pad, giving the GameCube pad a DualShock-style makeover and improving the Dreamcast controller in many aspects, but the flaw I get mainly is with the secondary shoulder buttons (triggers), as these tend to break more easily via stepping or pressing too hard. Thankfully, the wired StrikerDC and the Brawler64 barely suffer from this issue since the triggers are designed well (in my opinion). I have a feeling the Hunter will have the longest-lasting triggers as with these two RF gamepads since the Hunter's triggers are modeled after the OEM Series X's controller's triggers.

While i don't think RF controllers are terrible, i do think they're a little on the overrated/over promises side of things. They're nice option if you want an alternative for the worn out controllers on specific console. If you want them for pc/switch, there are way better options out there.
