While I'm not sure about that specific thing you're thinking of marshall branin, what you said reminded me of something similar to this video but in a different way. Way, way back in the early days of CollegeHumor there was this bit called Prank Wars in which Streeter and Amir would get back at each other with escalating hijinks. In one such episode they were supposed to be doing a small acting role for Amir but no matter what he did the others would put him down and say that Streeter was doing great. So, I get that when you were performing the sketch, everything you do just automatically feels so much more audacious and absurd but, honestly, Grant's performance was simply embarrassing: he just came off as so small and ineffectual; you could've replaced him with a dry block of wood and it would have had about the same emotional impact. Now, Lily was phenomenal: she absolutely radiates stage presence, single-handily saving this sketch, and establishes herself as THE young talent to watch!! Bravo!

Trapp and Grant reminded me of my crazy director’s with no actual education in acting/directing. The only reason they got hired for high school level acting was because the actual professionals wanted to be paid higher than the school was offering. Anyways, it ended up with us having a lot of shows like this. The regular kids (Lily) would do normal laid back acting, while the theater suckups were always looking for a way to “get into character” even if they had the most minuscule role ever. I remember one year we did Witness For the Prosecution as our fall play, and some kid had the role of the person who holds the Bible and asks the witness to take the oath. They only had one line and they got that role because they were a terrible actor (which was heartbreaking to them, because their dream was to make it to broadway). Anyways, they decided to improv a bunch of lines on stage and it was terrible and made no sense. Completely ruined the show and all I could remember were parents asking me and the other leads “was that *supposed* to happen?”
