In Street Fighter, Strategy is heavily emphasized. Or any fighting game in that matter, but I brought up street fighter specifically because Daigo Umehara’s advice to beginners is to never free flow a match. Always have a strategy, Daigo usually has a strategy for multiple play styles for matchups. He’s notorious for changing his play style to counter someone else’s counter adaptations. In this video you’re talking about you knowing the matchup, but not if the opponent also knows the matchup. I think there’s layers to it, and strategy also applies to all aspects of the game. Knowing when or if to put someone in the corner or in the air to get the optimal damage output after winning neutral in a specific matchup. Learning matchups goes beyond one strategy and a few tactics, so you’ll have answers if your opponent tries to adapt back and use their own new strategies or tactics.

Haha yeah, the beauty of fighting games is that your opponent is also trying to play to their win condition so it's always hard to find the balance of playing towards yours and denying theirs.

Great video as always. I thought you were going to discuss trying to play around opponent's kill moves - I know at high levels of play people will be willing to take a hit from anything that's not the move that kills them (e.g. being willing to take hits or eating a throw from Wolf as long as you know you're playing to not get hit by bair at kill percents)

What is the first step to someone figuring out the win condition of characters so that they can begin to formulate a strategy and tactics to beat it?

I'd recommend during a replay, just pause in neutral situations and try to predict what option your opponent will go for. Even if you're wrong, take not of what they did instead. Against most low-high level players you will likely see a pattern in what they will go for. From there it's up to you to lab how to make that option harder for them or how to straight up punish it! You can also just ask around haha. Ask players of other characters what they think their best options are in netural. What moves they rely on to kill etc. When you are at high %. that kill move is likely their new win condition etc.
