Trail running and cross-country running is the only kind of running I actually enjoy. I used to live near a fitness trail that was a 1 mile loop through the woods with various exercise stations spread along the length. The trail itself had many ups and downs and there were tree roots throughout, but that's what made it so fun. It was almost a mini-game keeping my eye on the trail for tree roots. Sometimes I'd skip the exercise stations and just see how fast I could run the trail without tripping over a root 😄

Getting back into running after a lengthy surgical recovery (and some inertia/laziness) and it's so refreshing to watch a running video that isn't focused on speed and pace. This was so motivating and really makes me want to explore some local trails.

Fergus and Johnnie.. firstly apologies for the lack of comments. Your new series is simply brilliant and superbly filmed and edited. Equally, as always deeply inspiring. The trust and friendship between you two is obvious. A success in every sense. What Johnnie is doing this year is unbelievable. Good luck. Another lesson from this is nature and being outdoors. As I have said before nature and being outside in all weathers and all seasons is literally my life saver. Mental and physical health are in unison with outdoor life and activities. Thank You Both. Deeply appreciated.

So glad you made the point on pacing up the hills. I've taken to trail running recently. Yesterday did 10km in 1.5hrs in the Lomonds. I'm 122kg, but still felt bad that a full 30 mins of the climb was spent walking, and the pace seemed so slow compared to my road time.

Trail running is great for training. However, if I am doing a race I prefer road running, I race better when there's a crowd and there's a festive atmosphere especially if I'm trying to go for a PR. There is something about "playing to a crowd" that does this for me (not that the crowd is there for YOU necessarily but people cheering and holding up signs and stuff at races does give me energy). Also road running is easier logistically to train for since I don't have to try to find a trail to run and can just start my run from my front door. That said I still prefer trail running for training.

My concern in trail running, and lack of doing so, has been ankle injuries, which I've now had 2 of. 1 of which was on trail bc a small ditch i didn't see. I find that I have to run so much slower to be safe and ultimately I am still at risk. But maybe I'm not doing enough mobility and conditioning work to prevent this. I'd love to hear your thoughts and the measures you take to safely run trails - conditioning, which shoes you use for trails vs road, do you generally run them slower (besides the inclines you mention that you often walk), etc... While I live in a bigger city, we technically have quite a few trail runs here in San Francisco that i could utilize (though I am perfectly happy running in Golden Gate Park which is beautiful and has a mixture of hills on paved paths). So it's definitely something I can start doing to mix up my runs On a side note, I've been so happy finding you, you're training videos, and your hybrid training lifestyle. I had been increasing my own hybrid training for a while (for Spartan races) but wasn't seeing a lot of information online for mixed training outside of observation race people, but was finding great success on my own (even with doubts and judgement from many athletes around me who like their one sport lane or who only lift). Finding you has been incredibly validating and useful in pushing myself to the next level of the mixed athletic performance that I currently am pursuing and valuing. Plus, you come as such a genuine and healthy guy who deserves a platform.

54m here, Ive only ever been an on and off road jogger over the years, this year I had built up to ~12km with a height gain of about 140m, I live in Dublin but I am about 30min drive from the Wicklow mountains so starting on part of the Wicklow Way, did my second one last Sat around 10K , with a height gain of around 450m , jogged and walked. Its a rush frankly, great fun , some killer inclines, running downhill is great, easier than walking downhill, or running downhill on concrete, so when at the half way point Ive done 3/4 of the work plus I arrive at the finish strong compared to a normal city run where the last couple of K are always tough. I see it as a real treat and privilege to be able to do this. Targeting 15km with about 600m incline and Ill be happy. Got a pair of poles to try next time to see if I can speed up the parts where jogging isnt feasible. Hoping for some great cardio gains!

The one thing I can say that was games changing for me in terms of endurance was the treadmill. It was boring, I was hard to run for more than 20 minutes. I kept at it, adding more time and more time, going a bit faster and farther on every run. Once I did my first race, it was SO much easier to run a half and full marathon. It was so much for enjoyable that I kept forgetting I was running. I actually had things to look at 😂. I was able to drop my 2:05 half down to a 1:33 in 6-months with a lower average heart rate, too. Next goal is a sub-3 marathon 💪🏻

2 points - 1: kudos to the cameraman for making it to the top of the hill before you guys did ;-) 2: come and run on Crete - the roads are just as varied at the trails. In the blink of an eye you can go from brand new seal to some huge potholes. The pavements have all sorts of obstacles in them, like trees, holes, rubbish bins, fallen fruit (slippery when stepped on) loose flagstones, cats that refuse to move, and more distractions than you can poke a stick at. Not to mention half of your running will be on the actual road (with the cars) because the footpath is un-navigable. Then you've got the roads that go past the beaches full of tourists in their bikinis..... Some sod has put a bunch of posts and stuff right in the middle of the path, so you take your life in your hands if you take your eyes off the path. And if you want trails - i live in the centre of Chania. There are some nice easy trails just 4kms from my house in one direction. Head in another direction for about 5kms and you have a huge hill to climb (4kms steep uphill) with sheep and goats and little old churches in the middle of nowhere, and fantastic views all the way up of the city, and then once you get to the top, fantastic views of the mountains - where there are even more trails. It's a happy place to be a runner. Best of luck for the jungle. I loved it out there ;-)

From watching videos like yours I've kinda wanted to start running, but I know it'd only be trail running and on places I walk the dog. The sound of off road is just nicer underfoot and under tyre.
