I have started running after almost 2 years. Though I was never a long distance runner, at max I ran 9 km. Now starting with 88 kg body weight and I can run the first 3 km pretty normally, the next 2 km is a bit challenging. However, I am running 5 km without significantly tiring myself. The goal is to run longer and reduce body weight just by running and skipping ropes.

I've been doing double days 4 days a week for a couple months now - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Usually bike or run 45 min-1 hour first thing after waking up and then do 1.5 hour weights on my extended lunch break (4 day work week is supreme. I come in early for a longer lunch break so I'm not rushed on weights). Lower/Upper split on weights. Longer run/bike/swim sessions on Wednesday and Saturday, recovery rides on Sunday. My body feels amazing with this schedule, and my mood has never been better.

‘Disregarding females’ has a time and a place? Care to elaborate? I’d like to know the context because that comment worries me, as a female follower of yours who feels generally threatened by the narrative towards us online and in politics these days.
@ferguscrawley956 күн бұрын
It’s purely in reference to the narrative of focusing solely on yourself and not looking for a partner/the pursuit of one as a focus/dating etc - which IMO can have a time and place if you’re starting a business/training for something demanding etc, as examples. It was purely a passing comment in the context of the ‘locking in, bro’ narrative that has developed recently around ‘The Winter Arc’ on social media, where the message is to just focus solely on your own development. There also used to be a mid 2010 phrase of ‘disregard females, acquire more gains’ which was intended to hammer home that lifting to get jacked/training hard should be for the individual rather than in the pursuit of a partner/partners. And became a bit of a point of pride for some people (wrongly, arguably 😂) that they weren’t ’distracted’ by anything other than their focus in the gym. So thank you for the prod as there wasn’t enough context given - but the broader point is I think there can be a time and a place for getting your head down and blocking out other pursuits to focus on something singular, but only strategically for short periods of time. A similar concept to ‘’monk mode’ which has also become popular online. Hope that clears things up 🫡
@Nayz136 күн бұрын
@ Thankyou Fergus, that does clear it up. To be honest, my heart sank (I actually unsubscribed) when you said it because I do consider you to be one of the intelligent fitness influencers on here and I worried you’d become part of the internet bro culture that is hell bent on hating women at the moment. So Thankyou for taking the time to explain, it’s appreciated. I absolutely understand the need to focus priorities in life. I will continue to follow you.

So, i wanna say something and could use some advice for that as well. I've done judo for 22 years (38 now and haven't trained for years because of a chronic muscleproblem on my traps or somewhere), i've done powerlifting somewhere in the last years of the judo training. Kinda loved it, but that gave me problems as well. I was always skinny, packed on some good muscle and after that a lot of fat as well. I got chronic sleep problems which i attribute to that hard training and weight gaining period: sleep apnea and sleeping problems. Haven't trained in years and i'm hitting the gym again today for the 1st time in a looong time (i also do horse riding, but this is only once a week for now, it's a good sport but need to do it a lot to get proper benefits). My idea now is to start a HIIT program with kettlebells. Just 3/4 exercises, 1 minute work, 1 minute rest, 5 sets. The reason i want to do this is because i am really UNFIT. Time is ticking! And i would like to be fighting fit, if that makes sense. Wrestlers work a lot with kettlebells and HIIT so i wanna try my take on that. I'm not a runner, never have been and will never be. So what is your take, as an athlete, on that? The workout will only be around 30-40minutes hard work and rest, with around 15 minutes of warmup. It will for sure cause problems with my neck again, but i need to push beyond that or nothing will ever happen. I'm also chronicly fatigued, so i can tell you that everything will be a damn struggle. Anything but horseriding appearantly. Your take?
@averagebro4135 күн бұрын
Damn. If u have neck problems do not do stupid stuff to make it worse. If you are chronically fatigue i would advise you to go to doctor and start slow. HIIT is too hard and stressfull and fatiguing. If you are overweight. Take walks, do strength training that has no bad effect on your neck. I would say push ups, squats and pull ups should be the first things to get good at. 5-10 pull ups, 30 push ups and 30 squats should be bare minimum to aim for.

The comment on if we’re not training to win medals etc hit home - I can be a bit hard on myself, and have a tendency to do a bit too much and in so doing become quite injury prone - which I find incredibly hard mentally! I’d love to see more about your rehab journey as it’s easy from the outside to think people in fitness are immune to injuries - but the whole mental process around it, especially if training for a specific event and worrying if you can still make it etc is hard and i think seeing how others deal with that has a lot of value

Just wanted to say Thank you Fergus! PS When are these Omnia hats becoming available?

I combine powerlifting and kickboxing, and it’s been an incredible journey. I've been strength training for quite some time, but only recently started competing in powerlifting. That decision turned out to be one of the best I've ever made - it reignited my passion for the sport and significantly boosted my progress. Having a clear goal gave me a renewed sense of purpose and drive. Kickboxing, on the other hand, is something I currently have no intention of competing in (at least for now), but I deeply enjoy the community aspect of it. It complements my strength training perfectly, providing everything that lifting doesn’t: endurance, speed, mobility, balance, coordination, and mastering technique. Together, these two disciplines challenge me in different ways and help me grow both physically and mentally.

been looking at hybrid training recently and i've lifted heavy for a good few years myself but always cycled as well and done a few duathlon sprints and i'm not very good at distance running but would like to combine all really and spread the love to all disciplines rather than just two wheels
@jeroenconinx61219 күн бұрын
I used to be a quite good powerlifter and having switched from that to triathlon, I deeply regret that I didn't combine any endurance training with my strength training earlier. While deadlifting absolutely destroys my running capabilities, I feel like I could've definitely combined my strength work with some cycling or swimming with little effects to my strength gains. This would've made me a more complete, healthy athlete and a better man in return.

Having gotten into powerlifting a few years into my journey, I can relate to all of these things, and when I got stuck there, focusing on more weight on the bar, it was a real struggle. I am much more content nowadays, doing a bit of both powerlifting and endurance, and really love the hybrid approach. I can also say the “ego” part of powerlifting (or any “box” people put themselves in) I feel like gets so many eventually, people stuck and sometimes injured too.
@alexirving217310 күн бұрын
I've never put myself into a "box" for training as it's always been to support my ability to race motocross (but that I guess is my box). I normally have a on and off season training which I try to balance cardio (run, cycle and swim) with weight training. currently I'm working on some power lifting goals and plan on competing in a power lifting meet this time next year as I've really started to enjoy moving heavy, weight which I'd never done before a few months ago

Loved the video! Been dealing with this a lot recently - being in-between elective ankle surgeries has impacted my identity when I've not been able to run or do kickboxing. Also feel I naturally go through bouts of going all in on barbell training vs weighted calisthenics / skills, instead of doing both and accepting the only important metric is fun with my training rather than being optimal for an arbitrary goal.

The cycle of returning to activities you haven't done in a while is fun. Sometimes what's old is new. And as you age, you're not the same athlete you once were, which makes achieving PBs even sweeter and the 'wins' feel that much better.

Really good video and it actually explains a lot how I felt transitioning from competitive thai boxing to triathlon, thai boxing stopped giving me that buzz and became a habit and a chore to drive to the gym every day and lose a lot of time commuting, however I struggled to lose the "identity" created in my own head and let go and try other things and simply enjoy. It's nice and refreshing that you had a similar experience transitioning from one sport to another and it's sort of normal to have these thoughts and fall into that trap, Great video

I think this is somehow needed, at least for some people, in the beginning, when you're just getting strong. Without focusing just on lifting, the progress can be extremely slow and frustrating. It's another story when you're strong already.

@ferguscrawley95 I'd also like to hear more on this tbh. I'm same age as you and currently in start up phase of my second business in similar field (nutritionist and exercise physiologist). My first is a boxing coaching company but I let my fitness slip so badly over the last 3 years that now, after starting to get it back, I'm really trying to balance the workload without doing what I did before and just go headdeep into the business. Even just knowing how many hours you spend working/training would be nice
