Hi, Josh's dad here. I am not expert in Japanese trout (I studied Arripis trutta, or "kahawai" or "Australian salmon" for my MSc.) BUT ... There are several native trout in Japan. In Gifu, it appears the main species are Yamame (Oncorhynchus masou masou - which I guess actually puts it closer to salmon end of the trout / salmon spectrum) and Iwana (Salvelinus leucomaenis - which would be a type of char). HOWEVER... I am not sure I've picked up all of the local nuances for Japanese trout. There are a couple of others there, and I'd like to see a really clear photo of one to make a better ID. There are also introduced rainbow (Oncorhynchus mykiss - from North America - again a more "salmony" trout) and brown (Salmo trutta - from Europe), and from what I could see in the video, I am wondering if the fish you saw were brown trout. All four species, and probably others, appear to be in Gifu. Also... you quit your job?!? What about your visa? What about the salamanders? Who will care for them now? How do you eat? How will you pay the electricity bills? WHERE ARE MY GRAND BABIES?!?!?

I never had to deal with anything that extreme, but they do treat people from different countries differently. For example I had a standard contract, but employees from countries like south America had to sign these really weird contracts taking liability for the strangest things, these weren't even legal in Japanese law, when I heard about these its actually when I knew it was time to get out of there fast

I'm going to Japan next month and was reaallyy keen on going to Gujo Hachiman, however my friends who live in Japan said that it's probably not for first-timer as it's a bit harder to reach by public transportation. Its not really hard to reach via public transport, but its about 3 hours away from Kyoto. If you were spending more time in Gifu though such as to see cormorant fishing, monet pond, Takayama or Shirakawago then its much easier to reach

@@InakaAdventure Hahaha That was a reference to a line from Andre the Giant in the film "The Princess Bride." They get into this series of rhymes and it begins to drive one of the other characters crazy. So, I just threw that in because I started rhyming at the end. Haha I have been planning a trip to Japan with a group for a few years now (it was derailed by Covid) and we are looking at a bit of a whirlwind tour. We are looking to start in Tokyo for a few days, then to Kyoto for a few days, then Osaka for a few days, then over to Himeji Castle on our way to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and from there either back over to Tokyo for the remainder or looping up to Kanazawa/Nagano and then back down to Tokyo to fly out. We are definitely going to make great use of the JR Rail Passes. Haha I have the feeling that this trip will only make us want the explore the country further (from Hokkaido to Okinawa would be a fun trip), but I am interested in seeing a wide variety of the cultural offerings of Japan.

I think from Kyoto to Gujo-Hachiman the detour would be 4 hours each way. So unless you are spending a few days in Gifu or you're traveling past the area (such as from going towards Tokyo) I think the time on the trains might not be worth it

I think I differentiate the trout by "tastier" and "not as tasty". I went to a very small ryokan in the middle of nowhere, Shikoku (the official name of the tiny town is Kamikatsu) because I'd met some beer brewers from Kamikatsu back here in Portland, OR. Dinner was little ayu with blue spots that were quite nice. Almost nothing to do up there but visit the taproom and the brewery. Oh the places I go just to drink beer.

Japan is probably the only country in the world where the idiom "use like hot and cold water (YU-MIZU NO GOTOKU)" is used as a metaphor for wasteful spending. This is because the idiom was created on the premise that water is abundant, almost free, and inexhaustible as a matter of course. Those born in arid, water-scarce regions or continents would not be able to imagine the abundant water situation that is taken for granted here in the Japanese archipelago.　 The Japanese archipelago, which began as a volcanically active region, is composed of steep mountains in the center of the country, and the large amount of rain that falls on the mountains permeates the ground surface and produces large amounts of clear water as springs on the plains at the foot of the mountains. This is truly a huge natural water filtration system created by Mother Nature. In Japan, since ancient times tens of thousands of years ago, clean water has naturally passed through this natural filtration system and flowed to the plains, where it became abundant groundwater, drinking water, and rivers that supplied plants and animals and kept the plains moist. This is an unusual structure of water purification and supply unique to a volcanic island nation. This is the reason why there is clean water in Japan and why humans have been living here since the prehistoric Neolithic Age, some 30,000 years ago. Japanese people are under the illusion that this is a natural environment that can be found anywhere, but it is the difference between the natural environment of an island nation and that of other continents. Surrounded by the sea on all four sides, geographically isolated from Eurasia continent in the Pacific Ocean this island nation has a warm and humid climate and is blessed with abundant clear water resources, a variety of plants, and fishery resources. Since ancient times, people have lived peacefully with nature. They have respected harmony, lived peacefully in groups, and overcome many severe natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and typhoons, with each other in groups based on their wisdom and have enjoyed the blessings of nature by cooperating. Japan's original country name NIPPON means "country under the sun," but the traditional name of the country when the capital was in Nara was YAMATO (WA).Yamato means "land of great harmony between people and nature. The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the Emperor's reign, but humans began to live in villages and communities in this island nation about 14,000 years ago, during “the Jomon pottery” culture. (That's 30,000 years ago, if you count the Neolithic period.) The name of the ancient Japanese nation of "YAMATO" or "WA" reflects the wishes and realities of the people to live and to survive in this natural environment of the island nation that differs from that of the Eurasia continent. The assumption is that water is free or cheap, which is everywhere in abundance. Japan's environment is humid and warm, so if left unchecked, harmful bacteria can easily multiply and things can easily corrode.　However, since they are surrounded by abundant water, they have learned and passed down from ancient times to take a bath every day and wipe and clean their houses frequently to keep them clean. This concept of "KIYOME（Keep Clean)" has prevented corrosion and pollution.

Gujo hachiman station is not a JR station, but it can be accessed by train. Ive always driven there, but by public transport you can take a Bus from Nagoya (2000 Yen 1 way, 90minutes) or train from Mino-Ota station (1380 Yen 1 way, 80 minutes) unfortunately some of the more beautiful old towns are very out of the way.
