If black walnut is steamed, the purple color is removed and you get a darker color in the heart wood. Color in a wood can be due to mineral staining ( normally found in small areas) or the products synthesized by the tree. The color of the heartwood of a tree depends upon the metabolites/by products made by a tree which are transferred to the heart wood. Different secondary metabolites like tannin, flavanoids, terpenes phenols and other byproducts give the heart wood its distinct color. The color depends on the products the tree makes and places into the heartwood.
@IronOakSawmill
@IronOakSawmill 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, and welcome to the mill. Most wood workers I know prefer air dried walnut. It retains its natural color much more than steamed walnut. Steaming evens out the color, including allowing it to bleed into the white heart wood, turning it brown as well. I've held both kiln dried, and air dried walnut side by side, and prefer the air dried walnut. Nature does I fluency the coloring in the wood. Thats one of the reasons Pennsylvania walnut is preferred by so many. Especially in our area.

I just widened my new LT35 yesterday to accept a 171" blade off a LT40 wide. Did the first test cuts today and it cut 33" wide really nice... It can cut 34.5 wide now. If you want to gain about 2" on your mill just cut the alum arm off that slides back and forth with the movable roller. If you look where its welded onto the round rod that slides back and forth, its what stops the movable roller from opening up farther. Cut it off right there, grind the spot smooth and it will gain you almost 2 inches...

A similar tree in this area, and is often mixed with magnolia, is yellow, or tulip poplar. From what I have read, the wood is nearly identical in color, and grain, and is amazing bug resistant. Its also rot resistant, if not in contact with the ground. There are plenty of those, in VERY large sizes, around here. We have around 20 logs ready to mill.

@@IronOakSawmill I really wish we lived closer. I would love to trade some Pecan for that English Walnut. You're correct about it cutting and acting like Hickory. We've found that it really moves if we cut it thinner than 2" slabs. Most of the time, we slab it, then let it dry for about 6-8 months then run it through a resaw. @IronOakSawmill
@IronOakSawmill 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Joe, and welcome. It would depend on how thick you cut them. In general when stored outside, stacked and stickered, and losely covered to allow good airflow, but keep it dry, about 1 year per inch of thickness. If stored inside, stacked and stickered, in a dry place,, with some dehumidifiers running, you can shorten that time. Its best to buy a moisture meter, and check them from time to time.

I have a large black walnut in quebec , canada... how to I sell it..?
@IronOakSawmill
@IronOakSawmill 3 жыл бұрын
You can contact a tree service and pay them to take it down. Have them take away the branches, and leave the large parts of the trunk. At that point, you can advertise the log for sale. I don't know a sawmill operator who would pay for the tree, and pay to take it down, and pay to have it cleaned up, then pay to have it hauled to their mill. The same for a timber buyer. Logging companies don't want to come out for a single tree. Especially a "yard tree". It is very expensive to bring the needed equipment to remove, clean up, and haul the tree away. Have a tree service take it down, then sell the log. You will recover part of the cost at that point. Advertise around alot, before having it taken down. See what folks would be willing to pay for the log, once it's down. That will give you an idea of where you stand. I hope this helps. These are my experiences with situations like this.
