Wood Mizer Flaming Red. That is some beautiful slabs. Do you know what causes the red? Iron, a fungus or sugary sap mixing with minerals? I haven't a clue but I heard one needs to keep the sunlight off it while drying to keep it from fading out. Don't know if that is true or not. Great job and I'm amazed. I watched "Nathan from Out of The Woods" saw up one a little while back but yours has much more flames. Can't wait to see the next video. Again, great job and.video you two👍👍
@IronOakSawmill4 жыл бұрын
Hello Barry. From what I have read, it's a fungus that causes the staining. What I cant find is how the fungus got in the trees every streak has little wholes, like a bug bored into it. Very much like ambrosia maple. I heard the same about the red fading. Maybe a finish with a UV protectant in it will help stop the fade. Something to look into. I saw Nathan saw his logs. Was hoping I could source some. Good fortune smiled on us a couple weeks ago, when these showed up. The next video should be in a week or so. I think you're gonna like it.
@barrywest37584 жыл бұрын
@@IronOakSawmill no doubt it is beautiful. As for the fungus, box elder I believe is in the Maple family, it could attract boring pests. It makes sense. I wouldn't know which one would come first. Sounds like a good study for some conservation college students to attack in a paper thesis. UV coating might do the job but from what I have read up on it fades during the drying process however, that was using a kiln. I believe you air dry. I enjoy keeping track with you both. Maybe you can take photos once a month to chronicle the flames staying power by air drying. Thanks for sharing a part of y'all's life.
@IronOakSawmill4 жыл бұрын
I've been doing some further research, and it appears that the red coloring is just something that occurs from most any type of sounding of the tree. I assume that the holes could have been made by the ambrosia bark beetle, and would cause the red staining. Branch nuns were also starting pointss of the staining, which would make sense as well. Although popular belief is a fungus, it appears that it's just what happens in the box Elder, in response to a wound of some sort.

@IronOakSawmill4 жыл бұрын
Hello Timothy, and welcome. If you are half way or more into the cut, and need to stop, and restart, I like to stick a wedge in to make sure the blade isnt getting squeezed.
