Tech vs Magic - you're so correct! They way I think of it is that in a magical world where only some group can use magick, non-magick users would be akin to people with disabilities. And Tech would be akin to prostheses.

Dude, I mean Dainiel. I was listen to the radio just the other day, and this woman was taking about about Octopuses (Octopies?) She said, there is no animal on Earth that are more different than us, and they aliens on Earth. Cosider this, most people who work with them, like them, when exposed to them. She told this story where this one where a woman was frighten of Octopuses, and they repelled her. After a few weeks, the repulsion vanished, and she liked them just fine. She said, "When you work with octopuses, you just have this feeling, that there is something there, a consciousness looking back at you, and it's not horrible.

I mean the question about whether magic or technology is more powerful in terms of conflict is kind of silly since it can be however the worldbuilder wants it. Magic is not something that exists in this world, and so is a totally free variable that one can alter and change into as many permutations as one wants. Technology is also a variable, albeit a more restricted one, since one can place a technological level at whatever place you want in history.

I do agree that authors often do focus too much on women’s physical appearance, but in my reading experience I’ve found it happening with men in a roughly equal amount. Men are also initially introduced with focus on their height, muscle, jawline, ect. However when the characters physical attributes are unremarkable I find it not mentioned much for both men and women. Just my experience so far. Loved the video though, great job.

I've never quite understood the concept of a "redemption arc" in fiction. (Or real life, even!) What is the standard for the wrongdoer to be considered "redeemed"? Who sets that standard? After all, there are things in life that cannot be "fixed" or undone. The core of "redeemed" means bought back / paid for. Does the wrongdoer decide what is sufficient payment for what they've done? And payment to whom? The person, family, or society they have wronged?

Non-human races, I think, are great, but there's a caveat on that to me Elves, dwarves, orcs, etc - they've been done. In Tolkien - sure, he's Grandpa Tolkien. But with others after him, it irks me when they're reused. Making your own evolution of them, but taking time to make them distinct? I'm down for that! Invent a new one? Even better! But a copy with maybe a small twist, much less so Unless we're talking about dragons. They have something in them that almost always makes them inherently cool
@jessi4894
@jessi4894 4 жыл бұрын
Out of all the fantasy races, I have realized that I really can't stand fantasy elves. Fantasy elves are just like people, except with pointy ears, and sometimes strange eye shape, pupil shape or colours. Elves are more beautiful than people, do everything better than any human ever could, and with less harm to nature and the environment than people ever could. They are sexier (bonus points for silvery hair like moonlight) more conscientious, wiser, better hunters, never miss with the bow, have better eyesight and/or can see in the dark, have better parenting and child rearing methods and strategies... So if elves are so great, why are there even humans? It's gotten to the point where the mere presence of elves outside of LotR is enough to make me drop a series

also there is a fair argument that the reason magic is secret in harry potter is becouse if there were a conflict between the magic and nonmagic world the magic world the muggles would win. (and that makes Voldermort dangerous because his superior speacies views will end with all wizards dead and not all muggles subservient)

Recently saw your video on the different subgenres of fantasy and noticed that you haven't gone into alternate history much. I can recommend Harry Turtledove. He's got a great series about aliens invading during WWII, and it covers from multiple viewpoints all the political and physical interactions between all the players. You know some more realistic and serious take on an intelligent race with its own cultural and biological natures that means to conquer and rule with superior-to-the-time tech... but not really wanting to drop nukes and ruin the planet for the colonization fleet coming in sometime behind them... He's also got some similar stuff, like what if Robert E Lee was at the Alamo, or if the South had won the war. Though I haven't read into those, I was more interested in his magical version of WWII. Dragons stand in for planes, behemoths for tanks, leviathans for submarines, crystal balls for radio communication, ley lines as natural energy sources and ships/trains that allows fast travel but only along those lines, and other stuff like that. Still a gritty view of war from perspectives on all sides and in all sorts of positions and occupations as he does in his alien invasion series.

Merriam-Webster says both octopuses and octopi are correct, but I think that's only because a lot of people who were trying to sound smart used octopi, which is still considered incorrect by the Snob of Snobs Oxford Dictionary. I think M-W is more liberal than Oxford - anything is, really - so they might just allow it because of popular use. There are still a lot of people who will fight you to the death that octopi is wrong, but just ignore them. If you want a reason for people to start saying octopi, it's because of latin suffix -us, usually pluralised -i, but since octopus is derived from greek, it's octopuses - not octopi. I've heard people pronounce bearnaise as bearnée, CaUsE iT's fRenCh.

I would have to somewhat disagree with you on the tech vs magic in regards to Harry Potter... while I think that in most cases, tech (gun) would win out over magic, the specific case you make (gun/bullet vs wand/spell) won't always be one-sided... there are wizards/witches in HP who can do spells without vocalization, and even if you were to be able to get a shot off with your gun, a wizard would likely be able to use a shield charm or other magic to deflect it... look at the ways wizards can deflect spells and arrows... specifically like when Dumbledore uses a shield to break down the glass shards that Voldemort shoots at him & Harry... a smart/savvy wizard would have many tricks and charms up their proverbial sleeves... but also, a muggle/no-mag would have many ways of possibly dealing with a mage before the mage realizes there is a threat or too fast to dodge/neutralize Just like anything... magic and tech both have their pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, benefits and costs... also much has to do with the wielder of the thing, old/experienced and skilled wins out over young and strong... and then there is luck too
Self Publishing is PAIN! (but here’s how to)
