we kill alot of birds wearing the stealth shades (covers our eye movement) and not real facemask when we are wearing our leaf suit. if you pace your movement and understand where the birds are looking, you can get away with more than you think. also, you counted to 20 incorrectly lol

Everyone around me turkey hunts. When I'm out swapping cards in cameras I kid you not I've had turkeys walking within 30 yards of me while I'm standing upright and walking around. Either I'm an elite ninja, these birds know exactly where I am and don't have the brainpower to process the threat, or they're so smart they know what a firearm or piece of archery equipment looks like and viewed me as a non-threat. Option 2 seems to be more likely than the others to me. Turkey hunting is like rabbit hunting to me. If you're not actively presenting yourself as a threat or behaving like a predator waiting to ambush they can/will see you and not bug out of there like you're a coyote lining up for a takedown. That or I'm just an exceptionally lucky person that's developed a weird worldview because of it.

I've missed exactly one turkey in my life and it was for this same reason. I shot right over the top of him. It remains, to this day, my most vivid memory of all the turkey hunts I've had, and I always double check myself on my decoys when I first set up to make sure that my head is down on my shotgun, and that I'm going to aim at the proper spot. Excellent video!

aim point may depend on the type of ammo and choke. About 8 years ago I was hunting family property in Florida. I had my Remington 11-87 with a modified choke and a 3" 00 buckshot load in the chamber and 00 buckshot in the magazine. Saw a buck across the fence (neighbor's property) so I walked back about 200 yards for some good cover near a creek bed. Long story short 2 gobblers walked out at about 30 yards from me. I put my rifle sights about an inch above the closest gobbler once he got clear of the other bird and pulled the trigger. He did a back flip. Had two hits, one in the head (fatal) and one in the neck (also fatal). My pattern at that range with those winchester 000 were the size of a volleyball. With the federal flite control 00 buckshot it was tighter, between a softball and volleyball. Point is, had that been TSS and an X-full choke I may have missed that bird.

Personally, I think TSS patterns can be too tight. I know many are impressed with their tight TSS patterns, but you better know your gun's point of aim when using them. A complete miss up close is not a deadly pattern. I like the knock out power of TSS, but some chokes really shoot tight patterns with the stuff. Regardless, you really need to know what your gun & load can do. A tight TSS load requires a very still target these days, & live critters aren't always still! For those who never miss, you haven't hunted long enough!

@@wolvesnight I appreciate the suggestion. I know what my Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike chokes will do on my 20, 12, & 10 gauge shotguns. I've used Indian Creek chokes for a long time, & I don't see myself switching to anything else. Most serious turkey hunters in my area use Indian Creek chokes, & they were popular long before TSS. If I want a more open pattern, I will put a modified choke in my gun (which I haven't tried yet). I don't see myself shooting 9 & 10 unless I was using a .410 or 28 gauge. Patternmaster are great chokes, & I use one for my Browning Gold 10 when shooting steel shot at waterfowl.

Not an arm chair quarterback comment just truly amazed. If i didn’t wear a mask and had an orange lanyard on i would have been spotted in a millisecond. But it works for you so good for you. Also do you normally run that many decoys? It’s a personal preference but i don’t think i would want to haul that many. Unfortunately i didn’t even hear any remotely close or was able to call any in this year. I have one more chance in a couple weeks so maybe i will luck out.
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 5 ай бұрын
The beard and stealth shades with a brimmed hat cover most of our face that a mask would cover. So many times no need for a mask when we have those. We had a very solid background too. Turkeys don’t react to color, they react to movement so the orange lanyard doesn’t matter IMO as long as you aren’t moving it. #of decoys we use depends. We have found a ton of success with the “love triangle” setup, which actually is a strutter with a strutt’n 360 motion base, 2-3 hens tightly packed to it, ideally with a breeder in front of the strutter and then a 3/4 strut Jake that is about 10-15 yards from the setup that looks isolated and alone. The birds see the setup, we turn the back of the tail of the strutter to face the bird to tell the incoming bird he’s dominant and then they come in and see the isolated Jake and size him up first. It’s crazy how well it works.
@derslyr42
@derslyr42 Жыл бұрын
No mask, bright orange necklace. I’m shocked those birds didn’t see your head moving so much. Full strut head tucked back and you aimed high that was a recipe for disaster for sure. Luckily that bird was fixated on one of those 30 decoys. Congrats.
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen Жыл бұрын
Ever heard of stealth shades? They cover your eyes and you can wear a mask still but with a beard and stealth shades and hat it covers your face well. Also the love triangle decoy setup is deadly. You should try it, it plays off the dominance of the birds and gives them an isolated easy target to pick on while approaching the big pack

I totally agree with your placement of the neck meeting the feathers but i would never agree with a body shot, if that was too far for you to hit the spot then your decoys were too far away for your skill level. lol - I always aim at the top of the head (in fact If I have a good mid-range 15-20 yard shot - I often try to hit the head with the bottom half of my pattern so that I don't spoil ANY of the meat). Strict head shots have no chance of wounding and losing a bird. Haven't missed a turkey so far. My advice would be to aim at the head and don't miss. - spend less money on decoys and use that for a nice choke and a couple extra shells to confidently pattern your gun.

Oh and don't shoot at a strutting bird - make a "put" sound if he won't break strut (or do a quick 3 note yelp on a mouth call) - that will pull him out of strut most of the time and he will stretch his neck. - This reminds me of that turkey story I heard where a dude hunts with a new turkey hunter and the new guy doesn't shoot a turkey that was 8 yards away behind a stump- he asks - "why didn't you shoot?!" - the new guys says, "all I could see was his head".

@WeekendWoodsmen

You are talking bird shot that is the size of a golf ball when it is close range. So if you have a golf ball pattern aimed at a golf ball sized target and that moves the amount of a golf ball you are missing. I don’t understand how people watch this video where I am literally aimed at the head of the turkey like you are suggesting and miss because the head moves and say “aim at the head”. If you don’t want to take the video evidence and adjust before it happens to you then, good luck, I hope you continue your streak. You hunt enough and keep aiming at the head at close range, you will eventually miss

@@chriscampbell895 also if you hunt turkey, duck and goose, then I went with a 28” barrel Beretta A300 outlander. Great versatility. There are always trade offs when you are using an “all purpose” gun, such as the longer barrel is a bit cumbersome at times in the turkey woods, so if you are just turkey hunting with it, then that’s when I would go with the shorter barrel. Sorry... but as someone who's shot shotguns competitively for about dozen years... there's zero chance of you missing that shot simply because the turkey ducked its head, even with a full choke (which I can't understand why you'd use such a tight choke at close range... but whatever, if you did). Even at 10 yards, the shot will have spread by several inches. You just straight up shot over his head... likely because you didn't plant your face into the stock or you lifted your head as you were pulling the trigger (which is frequently why shooter miss high in target shooting).

They are animals your never know when their head is going to move, and per previous comments with that tight of a pattern you do not hit breast meat. Aim point for bow as reference, which is where the beard connects, that gives you a good indication of where vitals are and breast is 2-3 inches below that, so you are 4-6 inches above breast with that aim point with a 2-4 inch pattern. @@04granada you aim at the head at 30+ because the pattern is much wider and you don’t want to blast it in the chest with BB starting to drop at that range.
