IMPORTANT THINGS I FORGOT TO MENTION: - This was kind of implied, but I definitely recommend you ask for letters of recommendation in person. Yes, you can provide materials via email, but it's best to have an in-person discussion (even if brief) with your teacher about your aspirations, etc. - Consider the Mere Exposure Effect I mention in the video! Your teacher is writing MULTIPLE letters, and while your college application is the most important thing in the world to you, it's not necessarily to them. So the more effect and personal connection you can make with your letter-writers, the more likely they'll spend more time, effort, thought on YOUR letter! - Remember to thank your teachers after they submit! I thanked them with a gift card and handwritten Christmas card before winter break started!

Thank you for this outstanding video, Amy! Can you explain a bit about teachers customizing LoRs to specific schools? I have thought of that before but figured it would be too much of a hassle for them, especially because they only submit the LoR once via the common app (unless you ask them to directly email the school)

Hiii Amy thank you so much for the video! I don’t live in the US so the education system here in Singapore is kinda different. we have secondary school from 13-16 and junior college from 17-18. I was thinking of asking for a recommendation letter from one of my secondary school teacher because I was really close to her and she mentored my research program. I’m not sure if that’s appropriate though since I’m now in a different school. May I get your advice on this? Thanks!

Hi Amy, I'm in the process of applying for Master's degree. Being a student from a developing country, I really need to get the full scholarship in order to study and live in Europe. This video really helps me in the step of asking for LOR. I have a question though, hope you can clarify. I always thought each teacher will only write 1 LOR for us, so in the end of the video where you showed the cover letter there was a part where you wrote the list of schools. So the teacher who writes the LOR will write different letters for you based on different schools? Or am I misunderstanding it? Thanks in advance ^^

This video was so useful thank you so so much, in september i’ll start my second to last year of highschool and ive been doing some research, i want to attend university in the USA but i don’t know how it would work with the letter of recommendation since i live in Europe, would i have to translate those before adding them to my application? I’m not able to find much information about foreign students in america so it’s been a little hard. I know i still have a year to make my final decision but i want to start preparing now and understanding what i need now. Thank you for everything, i started watching your videos recently and they’re very helpful🙏

For providing a resume, can I provide specific activities instead of a whole resume for certain teachers? So how did you ask them to emphasize each letter of recommendation? And also how did you do that for each school?

hey i got a question. Is it Reaaaally necessary for us to get LORs from junior and senior year teachers? In freshman year i got a national award with the guidance of my 9th grade english teacher, but she was my teacher only for 8th and 9th grade. So would it effect my application in a negative way if i got a letter from her?

You can totally get LORs from earlier teachers! Just make sure that they truly know you as you are now (we tend to grow throughout the years) and that you've kept in touch.

Even though Caltech is stem focused, I thought they ask for one STEM and one Humanities to get a more holistic view? Same for Stanford and MIT afaik. Any tips on what to ask a humanities teacher to focus on in a letter of rec for a STEM focused application?
@wamyy5 Жыл бұрын
Yes, they do - I think at the time, I had two STEM teachers, potentially making it 3 letters total for Caltech. For humanities teachers, we can take a similar approach! In both sciences and discussing bigger picture, it’s helpful to show the schools your problem-solving ability and tendency to think critically. Maybe you question things about an AP Lit book concept in class, showing you might be good at the scientific method. Either way, you can show your thinking by participating in discussions. Also, a great thing about humanities is that you tend to be able to show your values a bit more through your writing. Show the school how you’ll be a great contribution to the class community through the personal attributes you bring to the table!
