People seem to think that Orwell was such a visionary. And he was, of course. But people forget that people haven't really changed much through the times. Power still corrupts. Politics is not about the best for society. It is about power. That is what it has always been about. Not for the aspiring, ideological politician, but always for those that has been in the game for a couple of years. Because power corrupts. The thing that has changed, however, is the speed and flow of information. Which also makes the second half of another famous quote even more relevant: Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Robert Gregory - what ‘secret’ did he share? The BIG secret that caused all the hoopla was that the USA was recording EVERYONES phone conversations... but everyone already knew that! I work for AT&T on the cellular side in the network group, way back when it was Southwestern Bell Wireless, then Cingular, we were working on routing ALL calls through their systems. It was a MAJOR project, it required and still does, involve a boatload of people and that’s just one single carrier. Every trade publication wrote about it, it was common knowledge! Did Snowden steal or take classified info, maybe, but that’s not been released. What’s been released was already public knowledge!

Edwards Snowden should be the next Cabinet Level secretary of Cyber-Security and Ethics. From 15:48 to the end blew my mind. If we can't agree on what is happening, how can we decide what to do about it. Government derives its legitimacy and relies on the consent of the governed. Consent is only meaningful if you are informed.

"The jury shouldn't be distracted by reasons" And this is where we are folks...
@hazukichanx4085 жыл бұрын
Because why should they need to concern themselves with the morality of a legal issue? After all, morals are the only reason the law exists in the first place, to prevent wanton acts that we consider reprehensible, so taking all the moral and personal context out of a trial is perfectly reasonable. Either that, ooooor maybe those pushing for a "trial" along those lines, are the people who really belong in prison...
@vipset875 жыл бұрын

@SirTwilight5 жыл бұрын
@@hazukichanx408 I'm sorry, but that is absolute horseshit. He isn't talking about the jury passing moral judgment on the law itself, it's about whether the defendent was justified in breaking the law in this particular instance. The vast majority of crimes aren't strict liability crimes, and therefore the intent and mental state of the person accused of the crime can and should be considered. If we convicted every single person of every crime they committed, regardless of their intent or mental state, nobody would be allowed to defend themselves when being attacked for fear of being thrown in prison IF they survived the attack, people with mental disabilities, suffering a schizophrenic episode, trying to escape an abuser, in a state of panic, or just accidentally committed a crime would all be unable to defend themselves in court, and the jury would have no choice but to convict them because they did, in fact, commit a crime. Whistleblowing is treated as a strict liability crime, so that telling the truth about the government doing unconstitutional things is illegal, and defending yourself in court for doing so is also illegal. When your government makes you swear an oath to support and defend the constitution, but then orders you to do unconstitutional things (murder innocent civilians, for example), it is your duty to disobey that order, and do what you can to stop others from obeying it.

@@hazukichanx408 exactly if the reasons didnt matter then if you killed someone you are a murderer no matter what not bringing in facts like maybe you were being attacked in your home and were defending your life you would basically be treated the same as a real murderer who just goes out and kills someone for no reason it's not the same thing and shouldn't and isnt treated as the same thing so why with snowden doesnt he get that right? Its because the government thinks they're above law and dont want the facts of what they are doing to he shown because Snowden would be proven righteous

And having such a brilliant, eloquent, consious, and responsible citizen, Americans chose an orange for a president. Sometimes I fear we overestimate the power of reason, apparently people make choices based on emotions.... It resonates with lines from Snowden film: people don't want freedom, they want security. ....
@avienated4 жыл бұрын
I hope you realize that The Great Orange is in charge because you basically have a one party state. In 2020 there is no fundamental difference between the democrats and the republicans, except theatrics and rhetorics. Both parties are in the pocket of the rich and do their bidding. That means no room for candidates who want the best for America and it's people.

Snowden, I think, has recently been more conscious about the role his personality and character plays in conveying his message. He always wanted the facts rather than his personal story to matter. But what happened instead was that many people focused on him as a person. He is working with that by publishing this book, and he even took training to become a better storyteller, and at this point he has years of practice. And it shows!
@djuanstanziola98825 жыл бұрын
i think because with Trevor has another chance to tell about the book, the media has let him away and just pointed at him as a whistle blower for so long and now he has more of a chance to express more.
