I personally believe that anyone who refuses to give a straight and concise answer to a direct and easy question should be immediately labeled incompetent in their field, and the only stipulation to this is, if the person answering said question asks for the ability to give an explanation as an additive after their answer is given to then not waste the time of those who have the floor. Somebody wants to look and try to figure out what needs to be prioritized and tested only after allowing more of it to come in. It's so much more useful when people are forthright and simply answer the simple questions rather than try to immediately start down some rehearsed script that has nothing to do with the question at hand.

He spoke about information close to the subject but never gave the information that was requested. Why did you rescind the order to stop buying electrical components from China? His non-answer to that question was the most disturbing of all. When I worked for Boeing (now retired) every task and project we had included a schedule with dates and milestones of when each task was to be finished. Of course, we sometimes missed dates and had to recover. But the government has no incentive to complete tasks or studies on time or within budget. They get rewarded when they don't with more money.

I think Josh Hawley was obviously asking the right questions. As a staunch conservative, I want answers too. But the answer, as the person in the hot seat answered, is a lot more complex and could not be answered simplistically in percentage terms. These are extremely complex pieces of equipment, with various components within, having varying amounts of risk to the grid. Primarily the electronics and the firmware that drives the equipment……the “brain” so to say. So what they’re doing is a sub-component level, risk-based analysis…..the right approach. Unfortunately, that could not be shoe-horned into a nice sounding sound-byte for the simple-minded to get, and this official unfortunately got roasted for that.
