🎨 Fellow artist here! You make an excellent point about the unfair nature of most art contests. It would be ideal if more people did what you say about having different categories if they see that enough people are interested in participating. I myself have participated in a few of these, and I've only one a single one, and that was because there were literally just three more entries other than mine 😂 I haven't joined one in recent years, and I am well aware that my chances of winning if I do are in fact slim, especially if other artists more skilled than I am participate too, which is almost always the case. But like you and Bell-Bell said, sometimes the prompts are just fun and/or are a great way to get out of your comfort zone, sometimes even just a cool way to beat artblock when you don't have any drawing ideas. Losing can sting, of course, but fortunately, as I've grown older, I've learned to just enjoy the progress and the results for what they are, and to compare myself to others less and less each time. At the end of the day, art is a personal journey, and every single unique artstyle has something special that only the artist who made it can bring! 😁

I am a person who likes to write and draw and every time I've joined an art contest I've done it knowing that I couldn't win. Yes, I would imagine the possibility of winning and I'd try to do my best to make it a reality. But in the end, when I loose it is something that I already knew was going to happen. That way when planet Earth calls me back from my daydreaming it doesn't hurt. I've already have fun daydreaming and doing art, so I don't need a price.

I am not an artist myself but I understand that being in the art contest is hard. It actually requires you to be more competitive while everyone has their own style of drawing. It's not fair to be honest. Even the professional can nitpick on every little details they need to improve which it's okay to get feedback but not criticism. Of course, they have more room for improvement if they motivate themself. That is why in my discord server, we don't create an art contest instead, we added an art channel and we pinned their work. That way it's fair for everyone and even we comment the positive things about their work (we can even make at least a paragraph). Btw, it maybe too early but you're almost hit 20K subscribers so soon! ❤❤

I don't think the art style does it justice to begin with, but even so the design feels plain (and I really wish Magnifico's outfit was bicolored like King Stefan's from "Sleeping Beauty").

10:46 that’s so true, another important thing to realize is that you may be really good at drawing one thing, but not so good in another area. Me for example can make up creatures in my sleep and draw them, but I’m not currently so great at drawing realistic looking things and hands and feet. I’m working on drawing hands and feet and getting better

🎨 I have participated in about 3 DTIYSs and to no surprise I didn't get 1st 2nd or even 3rd place. Not even an honorable mention. It sucked, but I expected it. Now I just do DTIYSs for fun. I even made my own DTIYS. No deadline, no competition, no nothing. Just for fun. I get why you find it unfair. I also find it unfair at times. But like Bellbell mentioned, it can be fun if you're not that competitive.

Yeah, I have quite experience with art contests, and I always lose, most of the time i don’t care that much because I just enter for fun, but sometimes I really put effort and when I lose I just very disappointing, las moth I was in a challenge that was one drawing per day in which you couldn’t skip any day i found wanted to win, I gave my everything and still lose, so I don’t know if ill keep participating like that…

0:56 as someone who entered into a specific contest for years, me and my parents realized how much of a scam they can be. They’ll award someone who clearly isn’t the best, just because they may have less of an opportunity to practice art. They’ll also award people who have made something different, just for that reason, despite whether or not it’s good.

Interesting notion. I am not an artist by no means, but when I see these contests happen the winner is picked randomly so it’s not on who did the best but it’s a random person so anyone could have got the winner’s spot. I do like your idea of having it be beginners, intermediate, and advanced. It’s just like in gaming competitions. The best gamers aren’t playing with people who just started.

Oh yeah! I've seen very few contests that operate more like a raffle than a judged contest. I forgot those happen too! But more often than not, most contests I've been exposed to are judged...which isn't great with the ride range of skill levels.

I totally agree with the fact that social media art contests don't help when it comes to helping small artists... I have entered some discord emote contests, but I would say that that is different. I also (would love to) enter local art contests that fit with my style of drawings. I create the boundries for myself by looking at what type of contest it is. And that sucks because I've come across so many contests that are (mostly) about realism, but I don't draw realistic stuff... and it makes me sad to think that people (also my younger self) would enter thinking they can win, but standing little chance to do so because the one judge doesn't like their style... causing them to feeling down and draw less and less losing competition after competition and having no motivation left...
