I'm so very sorry but I'm ready for it. Cast your pitchforks 😓😩 EDIT: 😂 So after talking to a few of you, I think I understand where some of my visceral hatred is coming from. The main character does look like Betty boop. I fucking HAAAAAAAAAATE the Boop. Her head looks like a suitcase on top of a girl's body. If I can make up superpowers one of them would be so she never existed. I only learned about her a little over a decade ago when everybody and their grandmother started wearing her on their clothes. I cannot stand that character! I'm sorry if she's an icon for some other historical thing but it just drove me in-fucking-sane. I hate her more than I hate Barney, the dinosaur with human teeth. If I'm in a really happy mood and I look at her face or even think about her, I instantly want to smash my face through a fucking window. I really would want to know or ask some therapist what the hell is going on with that. There's not a lot of things that do that to me, but for some reason her face and the uncanniness of the placement of her features, just sends me into a demonic irrational rage.

the point was to make her look different than the other vessel. its pretty clear that the chosen vessel used to embed her soul was the most unfit of the three so she was made to look the most different than her previews versions. I think this design choice works well for the story without making her look bad for the eye.

Gendy actually did kind of address the animation by stating that he wanted to create a serious story with a classic cartoony aspect because much of the world believes that a show, and I quote "too cartoony" can't be taken seriously story wise. To me, this truly shows that with animation normally known for comedic purposes can be taken seriously. Gendy said that the animation style was inspired by a mix of Astro Boy, Popeye, and Betty Boop's art style. Which fun fact, Gendy was supposed to do a Popeye movie, but in exchange we got the Emoji movie. Take a minute to soak that in. Lol.

1) For the record, Primal didn't end. It's just on hiatus while Genndy Tartakovsky is working on his adult animated Sony movie, "Fixed". When the show comes back for Season 3, it'll become an anthology show. "The Primal Theory", which was a Season 2 episode, was used as a test of that concept. 2) I actually liked the art style of this show. It has a good mix of '60s anime, '30s Fleschier cartoon, and steampunk aesthetics. I'm just not a fan of this show's pacing. Several moments either went by too slow or too fast. It was hard to take some key moments seriously! 😅

Yeah I do agree with your point... Adding to it part of why they don't feel right might be due to being awoken too quickly this time or that they're finally in the era where the Steambot was created. On the first guess since the Steambot was woken up by the villain's minions it's intentional as MC's mind is in this weird fugue state where she's not her witch self nor her current identity, the monk is way too young to control his cosmic awareness and knight elf seems nerfed. On the other hand since I think they're the era that the Steambot originated in .....this might be the magic starting to fizzle out.

I mean to b fair Astro boy/Tezuka was influenced by the fleischer style, also called the new york style, which is wat Betty Boop & Popeye r, and despite being European, Asterix falls under. Tezuka was also heavily inspired by disney's early work, especially Scrooge Mcduck. Genndy had stated somewhere that he had wanted to go in a different art direction away from sharper looks like Dexter's lab to a more 3 dimension sort of look. I quite like it. U can especially see the astroboy in the magician's billboard of himself b4 becoming Eldred. I admire Genndy for always striving to diversify animation styles

This was the first time a show ever interested me enough to want to watch it upon debut. I immediately loved the art style so much and I’m really glad that in a time where a ton of cartoons lack distinctiveness and/or creativity in the visuals, genndy can always pull through with something that looks different and refreshing. I really dig the bleak and quiet atmosphere, it pairs nicely with the chosen time period and I don’t think it comes off as awkward or unnatural like you said, rather laid back and reserved. I’d also argue it’s supposed to intentionally feel like a slower-paced buildup to make room for bigger things down the line. I found part of the thrill to be how we discover more about the background of the characters at the same time Melinda does. Sure, it’s not the most stimulating approach, but receiving the information this way makes it feel worth more, and I feel it ultimately has a greater impact than if it was done in a super climactic and fast-paced way. I’m also pretty sure that Melinda being unlikable is the whole point. She lashes out at the people trying to give her guidance, but it’s justified through the fact that her memories are lost and she has to make a difficult decision. I personally think it makes for a really interesting character, and I honestly think all of the main 4 characters have really good potential based on what we see in this first glimpse of the series, Seng especially. Edred is a bit of a wild card but we really only see him during the last few minutes so it’s understandable. Overall I’m really excited to see more of this show and it would be great to see you give it a shot. I hope you can warm up to it down the line, but if not, that’s totally fine!

I love Genndy's work and his innovative-ness! I feel like with just the first shot of episode 1, u can tell immediately it's his work! Tbh I'm not sure the reviewer would b able to continue watching based on their strong reaction to the art style. I don't think this review was even fair as while they eventually brought up points like the voice acting, they weren't able to articulate why they felt it wasn't good without going back to the unrelated dislike of art style. To me, it seems they were unable to comprehend parts of the story as well. But I digress. Anyway, I enjoyed your comment and thoughts about the show! I didn't find Melinda unlikable at all, her brooding about the situation only makes me want to find out more about how it works! I was also surprised by how well the tezuka/fleischer style Genndy went for works with the victorian london background. Copernicus fits perfectly on both fronts! I look forward too to the next episodes!!

@@kelseykagamine04 Thanks for the nice response! And yeah I do also think Melinda is likeable, I guess I was aiming a bit more towards her not being as much of a positive person or force of righteousness during the first couple episodes as she’ll most likely go on to be later. Which again, makes the most sense for the plot and it would be a little strange if that wasn’t the case. I don’t hold anything against the reviewer though because I constantly find trouble expressing my opinions, especially on things I don’t like. I’m just glad I could personally find enjoyment in the show and that there are a lot of other people that feel the same way :)

It's one thing if you're not familiar with the art style, but you need to understand that the reason the character designs look the way they do is because this is Genndy's _signature_ style when he's not going for something serious, mature and / or dramatic like Star Wars, Samurai Jack season 5 or Primal. The works of Osamu Tezuka, Asterix and Obelix, and more prominently Max Fleischer are major inspirations of Genndy Tartakovsky's art style, this is visible through his other works as HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, SYM-BIONIC TITAN, and especially the cancelled Popeye movie (when he actually drew some storyboards himself) and the Luke Cage comics the most. Hell, that old school style sneaks its way into Primal a bit here and there. Personally, I love this style because it's what I usually love about Genndy's art in general: simplicity, exaggeration and style over realism and complexity. Even when going for the Fleischer style he still finds a way to make it look dramatic and dynamic.

He does, it's just not what fans usually expect because so the endings are more logical on the situation. Samurai Jack was always going to end with Jack going back to kill Aku in the past, meaning everything and everyone he met will cease to exist. As with Primal, how else do you think that final battle would go? They can't hurt their enemy, they can't even touch him, they have dealt with supernatural beings before and all they could do was run. Spear's sacrifice saved everyone and his legacy got to live on through his and Mira's daughter.

This "review" is pretty much a nothing burger. You keep contrasting it with primal in terms of how it made you feel, but don't draw any tangible comparatives or metrics. But that's besides that point, you fail to really establish any points other then some over stated revulsion. Art style not your cup of tea? That's fine. Story not fulfilling? Also I can get that. But as a "review" you actually need to give reasons behind it.

I personally loved it. I think the best way to explain the art style is that it seems to be inspired by classic animation from Osamu Tezuka and Max Fleischer. It’s amazing and really special that Tartakovsky is able to revive these old styles of animation and make something truly unique out of them! Definitely dig it.

You're right AND you should say it. From the perspective of someone who's familiar with its historical references and has taken animation classes, the series feels insanely incohesive so far. It looks crazy and honestly, Unicorn Warriors Eternal has one of the worst pilots I've ever seen. I blinked for a second and I was lost for the next two episodes. It was incredibly validating for me that you noticed how odd the voice acting was, and while the dialogue doesn't help, part of the problem is the over-acting in the lip-syncing. It's so distracting :')

The show is very clearly inspired by the rubber hose era art style from old animations and comics. Betty Boop, Popeye, Asterix and Obelix, and many other classic properties are made in this style. Genndy Tartatovsky had a Popeye movie in the works but it got cancelled. I'm guessing he took this as his chance to work with that art style because of the cancellation.

I feel like there's a possibility to go in a bit of a darker direction. Like i was unclear whether the robot was just "awakening" their past lives, or just overwriting their current lives by implanting their old personas onto their current personas. And if it's the latter, i feel like the show could take a darker direction.

It takes a lot more for me to hate someone, especially if they are someone I don't know personally. Besides it would be a bit hypocritical of me, since artstyle is what keeps me from watching shows, that others have called some of the greatest ever, like beast wars and reboot. It simply means you have a different criteria for your uncanny valley than others or that you have not grown up with the comics and cartoons, that inspired this shows artstyle, thereby getting used to it. Then again I never made a 11+ minute video (have to be long enough to get monetised, right), spewing nothing but hatred and insults, at something other people seem to love, apparently with no other reason than to get views. I would find that kind of thing distasteful and rude if not outright crass. Now for my own thoughts on the shows artstyles Personally I see the different art styles used as a representation of different worlds, hence why the different ages, seen in the flashbacks, use different artstyles and why the different characters change artstyle during their reawakening into their former selves. The world is changing in ways that they might even be completely different universes. This is best seen with Emma/Melinda who is stuck between her two selves and her character is therefore not drawn quite with either style, since she does not belong to either world. The old-timey artstyle is a representation of the world they live in. A time full of wonder, hope and cheer. A world where the worst is a bit of cartoon violence, where you get a bit dirty, but are otherwise fine. A world where the closing of an orphanage and subsequent abandonment of its charges, does nothing more than create a group of quirky rascals, who seem no worse to wear than having a couple of holes in their clothes. At least until the ancient evil returns. Notice how the undead elephant is drawn in a different artstyle than the background and the general population? Like that kind of thing doesn't really belong in this simple, cheerie, colourful world?
@GinoGabriel-t5c
@GinoGabriel-t5c Жыл бұрын
This is the first time I disagree with you. The art style is not as horrendous as you say and the animation is excellent. I don't know how you could say the drawing is bad when the drawing of your own logo is not even good. When criticizing the art style, asides from the character design, did you not even take into consideration the color scheme and the background? Sure the character designs aren't as good as Primal's (but to me it's still good), and say what you want about the design of the human characters, but the design of the robot is a chef's kiss for me. The backgrounds of this show are amazing! The perspective is on point and the color scheme is well done and blends well with the characters. But anyway, art is subjective, and you are entitled to your taste. As for me, I think this show is good so far and I'm going to see it through. Genndy is a versatile artist and if you look at his filmography, he never repeats the same art style whenever he creates a new show. I trust in the man's artistic vision and I'm willing to see where this show goes.

Did I get all that or did I leave anything out- OH! And there is a weird sexy fox girl apparently.

I had heard about this show a bit ago and although I don't usually have CN access at home, I was able to catch this the other day on Adult Swim while on a trip. I usually enjoy Genndy's animation work, cartoony style, and gorgeous storytelling through expressions & movement... so I had a feeling I would like what I saw. I missed out on mostly all of Primal & the final season of Samurai Jack, but I liked the couple of episodes of each that I was able to catch. (WARNING: Slight U:WE spoilers below, probably) I think its first episode was a great set-up for the basic plot & the whole reincarnation thing, but with the cartoony, almost rubber-hose-esque style & design of some things, it felt really weird & almost a bit safe for an Adult Swim show. I think I expected something more brutal, even at the start... but I did think the first episode left a good impression on me! And I hate to admit it, but yeah I agree with you. Even I nearly tapped out on the second episode too. I get that it was focusing on Emma/Melinda and the whole struggle between this new identity she now has & what she once thought she would have after getting married, but... GOOD LORD, it dragged with the flashback stuff for much too long before remembering that "oh yeah, we're an ensemble cast" so it could add yet another new character... to join the other one that was added only moments before. Honestly, if it had only had one character per episode awaken to their past life, that would've probably worked better. Overall, did I dislike it? No. Did I like it? Eh... somewhat? I did like the idea of these souls being reincarnated down the years, regardless of the time period. Also, the main setting of this turn-of-the-century British city with a bit of steampunk mixed in... is pretty cool. It looks a bit odd with the Genndy style of designs & animation, but at least the animation DOES look good to me. The character variety was pretty neat (I like the spherical robot), but I really wish a new character could have been released with each episode, instead of us having 2 of our leads awaken at the start & near the end of episode TWO. Will I want to keep watching? Actually... yes. I hope that things keep getting darker & start taking more risks while these reincarnated warriors start to get their spit together. I want to learn more about everyone & this mysterious, villainous threat. I really want it to improve so that those 20+ years he spent plotting, planning & working to make this a reality actually turn into something that is a subversion to what it seems like (a cartoony hero show with reincarnation & a never-ending battle of good vs. evil).

I can see where you are coming from. Admittedly, the character designs of the original warriors from the very beginning of episode 1 look infinitely better than those of the "current time" reincarnations, but I wouldn't say they are as off-putting as you describe. I might just be too far gone on the Gennedy copium due to lifetime exposure, but to me the show is quite nice and perfectly enjoyable. Not one of his best, definitely not in the top 5, but so far it seems quite enjoyable and much better than most other things out there. The one point I will vehemently disagree with you on though is that the live action lazy cash grab peter pan is better than it in any aspect. Bar that we can agree to disagree and I wish you a good day.

I want to like this show. I really do. And I don't hate it. But it feels confused about what it wants to do. The stylized art is fine, I get if it's not for everyone, but the plot... It's supposed to be about a trio of supernatural heroes reincarnated into the future to save humanity. What we got is a story focusing on the main girl struggling with the original personality of her reincarnated body. That could be fine, but Melinda is NOT AN INTERESTING CHARACTER. Her personality is basically "get away from me, you don't understand me". Copernicus is great, the elf dude is cool, the psychic is slightly annoying, but interesting enough, but Melinda is just awful. It really feels like it cares more about her than anything regarding its original plot focus. Still, I'm going to finish it. I have hope that it will ultimately deliver a quality story by the end.

The reason why the characters look this way is because Genndy Tartakovsky used to work for Hanna-Barbera back in the day in the 90s when it was still a thing, the cartoon company that created the Looney Tunes, the Flintstones, the Jetsons, Scooby Doo and Yogi Bear and he actually got guidance from one of the original animators of Popeye back in the 1930s and due to the fact that he created Dexter‘s laboratory I think his style is more children’s wacky comedy cartoons that are fast paced and get to the point and there is nothing wrong with him doing those types of experiments on those types of cartoons at all but yeah, I agree with you Genndy should probably just stick to making fast-paced wacky children’s cartoons and there’s something else that you need know he was going to make an animated Popeye movie about 10 years ago, but it got canceled in favor of the goddamn emoji movie

I love Genndy Tartakovski, but I think my biggest issue here is that I didn’t know how I was supposed to feel from one scene to the next… Like with the wedding scene in the first episode: the lighting, pacing, dialogue and music are all pulling in the same direction to have it feel like a serious moment ripped apart by fate taking over when the bride is ‘changed’… then you have the reaction shot of the groom with this weird, whacky ren and stimpy style sad face…. And I just laughed. It was so at-odds with everything else in the scene, and I kept finding that time and time again that it just pulled me out of it. Primal and Samurai Jack were experimental but all the elements kept pulling in the same tonal direction from one scene to the next. I couldn’t get immersed in this one.

Well I respect your opinion, I guess the retro style is not your thing, but, you really didn't get that the girl character is based on Betty Boop? and just because the author wants a different tone than Primal doesn't mean it is bad, you just expected the same product and you didn't get the same product.

I'm kinda surprised, I found the story very engaging and loved the old tiny cartoon style the show had 😅 as an animation nerd, I was geeking out anytime I saw a background character and when the smoothness of the animation show through. It's fine though, everyone has their own opinion

Finally, a take on this show that I agree with. Most of the designs made me physically uncomfortable. I'd read this as a comic book but idk if I can sit down and watch this this. There are some things that I really like about the show like the steam punk setting, the monster designs, the colors and details of the world, but man. I can't stand looking at the main characters and that's unfortunate.

the art seems kinda like an interesting marriage between old disney and japanese art. everything is exaggerated and there were some weird designs, but it also kinda reminded me of some moments from Samurai Jack. i think most people can get accustomed, especially with a history of watching various art styles. I was actually disappointed cuz i thought the whole season was out, but there was no Next Episode button. Idk why you got this visceral reaction, but oh well.

Your thoughts on Miss Boop made me think of a comparison. Did you ever watch As Told By Ginger? When that show premired, I remember a lot of fans being upset with the character designs. Unlike previous shows that KC had made, these characters has giant round heads with their lips where their chins should be. It was an art style I enjoyed (possibly because I'm a Fleischer fan), but the hate was definitely there from some of the viewers in the early days. There was a weird uncanny valley-ness that they weren't used to. It's considered a classic now, so I assume most fans adapted to it, but their reactions were understandable since it wasn't something they had been properly exposed to. I can't blame you for disliking the look of said character design. I absolutely love it, but then again, I've been absorbing it for years, because I love old cartoons.

@@Alteori well like anything it takes time to get use to the world and story and characters, but I found the animation smooth, the character designs are kind of like Tartakovsky's but it wasnt entirely his but someone elses, there's a Pacific Rim like show that Tartakovsky did with another that's art style is more akin to the art style in this show. Overall I learn that you can't judge a show entirely until you watch a whole season Alteori, its like what you did with Star Trek Lower Decks which I think you should give another try.

@@WarpChaos Justin Roiland was cleared of all assault charges in regards to that individual, but not the Dm's that he did directly to the underage individuals. Charged for a crime or not, those multiple direct messages that he did to those underage individuals means he is not coming back. (Speaking as a person who counsels others for mental health, even if Roiland is a survivor of abuse, that is a stupid way to talk to individuals whether he was grooming or not, and I'll leave it there.)

I know you hate her design, but I adore Melinda/Emma’s design. I find it so cute!! I’m a sucker for the dark brooding female character so I really can’t not like her 😭 I like the designs too, except for Edred. His design is very…unoriginal. Nothing really unique about him. But yeah Melinda has my heart 🥳

To answer your question Alteroi you're pretty much watching a Betty Boop base running on anime fuel. Best way I could describe it. Also you should watch symbiotic titan that show is insanely good unfortunately it was written off early so it's incomplete but the story, the character, and art style amazing (and smexy).

I liked the show until that debacle of a finale. Emma fumbled the ball hard at the end then had the audacity to try and act like she didn't, and that they still had this and were gonna win no matter what. Girl, you done oofed the entire space time continuum due to your instability and inability to make a hard decision. She didn't deserve that gung ho moment at the end, she should've hung her head in shame and apologized to everyone

Nah, I don't hate you Alteori. I do like the show though, and I am looking forward to seeing more. But you do bring up some good points. I knew the art style wasn't going to be for everyone. I'll admit, it took a while for it to grow on me. And the pacing could've been handled a lot better. The reason why the art-style doesn't feel like Genndy's, is because the style is actually Stephen DeStefano's: A long time friend and collaborator of Genndy's. The story as well isn't entirely Genndy's either. Unicorn's head-writer is Darrick Bachman. Much like DeStefano, him and Genndy go way back, working on projects like Sym-Bionic Titan and the fifth season of Samurai Jack. Genndy has his own distinct style of story telling when he's 100% the head of the story. And in my opinion, his style of story telling is best seen in Samurai Jack, Primal, and The Clone Wars: Mini-Series. Which is all on KZbin and I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't. You'll see what I mean.

I kind of agree. Tonally it feels more like Symbionic Titan than Primal and I know with Symbionic Titan it took it a while to get going and for me to actually like the characters so this may be similar. It actually annoyed me because right at the point where I really got invested the story ended due to cancelation. Art-wise this feels like something between the Asterix comics and old style cartoons, definitely a retro feel. The reincarnation storyline I gotta be honest I was watching and the only thing I could think is “Fantastic Children did it better.” Because the storylines have similar premises, in both cases you’ve got a group of travelers who are being reincarnated regularly, in both cases something calls them back to their intergenerational task, in both cases this task is about tracking someone down although for different reasons. Fantastic Children did a better job with the tension between the past life goals and the present life desires, which is something Unicorn Warriors is playing with with the tension between Emma’s desire to return to her fiancé and Malinda’s duty to continue to fight. I found the fact that the warriors were willing to just forget about their current life’s attachment and goals to be jarring, especially in light of the way the characters in Fantastic Children were written. But I do feel like this is more of a slow burn where it will take a few episodes for the story to start coming together. Emma’s design reminds me of Betty Boop, including the placement of the lips.

I can see the problem here. It's not so much the old style animation but what it's used for. If it was a cartoon like Betty Boop or Felix the Cat with a short simplistic storyline it would fit. But a show of this caliber should have animation as complex as its story. This would have been better suited as an anime. And yeah, the voices sound really off. Like it wasn't recorded in a studio, or the voice actors aren't proper voice actors. It really sticks out.
