Well, maybe. This time on Engine Masters, presented by AMSOIL, we dive into what effect changes to your intake manifold's plenum volume will have on your motor. We want to know if all of the Internet's theories about big boost, big cubes, and/or big rpm needing bigger plenum volume really hold water. Will all of that increased volume really turn into increased power production or are you just creating hood clearance headaches? Watch as we go from straight out-of-the-box to out-of-the-bounds-of-sanity with this plenum volume comparison. #EngineMasters

I went from a stock Tuned Port Injection long tube intake runner making a lot of low end torque... To a Holley Stealth Ram intake with a large plenum and short runners. Love the latte... If memory serves me correctly I think it made an extra 80 hp on a lean AFR

Just watched this. Great stuff 😀😀 Just a thought. That lower intake manifold. The air going into each cylinder may be dictated by the runner size. So no matter what size the plenum above makes no difference. If you look at a V8 Supercar engine for example, They run independent runners with a throttle butterfly on each cylinder, but a massive air intake plenum above it. I would love to see that same engine tested with eight throttles and see if the power is different.

I subscribed to motortrend, I feel it's worth it given all the content besides roadkill. I enjoy the tech in this program and hope it sticks around. I feel like this being a relatively new episode that it may be in jeopardy barring interest. I also miss the short how to segments on the on demand channel.

They would make so much more money if they brought some of these series (like the ones that did really well) back to KZbin. Throw in an ad slot/season sponsor slots and then some of the other shows/newer shows BTS etc on the MTOD program.

We need more real world stuff like this current stock or slightly modified motors like 5.3 5.0 5.7 stuff most people drive today and want to build for everyday street applications

Yes,please. Easy to do mods for most bang for the buck. We do NOT have cubic dollars. Intake runner lengths affect the torque curve,NOT high-RPM power. Street.......We are not all drag racers,I'll guess. I'll spend $50 for a 10% increase in low end torque,not $100 for a 10 % gain in red line power. Thanks.

Hey Dave, big fan of your shows.... you should do a roadkill garage extra building your own AFR gauge for carb tuning so us guys that don’t want to spend $600 on an afr kit

I hope this was a joke episode for Halloween, because I love this show and this episode seemed like a joke. I thought it would have good insight like the carb air filter episode, where we learned a salad bowl can add a few hp's, instead this episode was short and did not really teach anything.

Serps1991 I agree to a degree. I wish they would’ve gone smaller with the plenum as well to show an inverse effect. The plenum they tested first was too big for the mild engine (they said so themselves). Ok so....try a smaller one and see what happens?

@@CraftsmanQuad19 the problem there is to run any smaller of a plenum than what they had would have requored changing the manifold, and then you get into runner size and length changes, and those things do make drastic differences. The common theory is bigger is better, and this proved that isn't always the case. And I'm willing to bet it's fairly accurate and even going smaller wouldn't have made much, if any, difference.

Serps1991 why would you need to change the manifold? All it takes is a little sheet metal and some ingenuity to make a smaller plenum for this existing manifold. They made the big one, why can’t they make a small one?

I don't hold myself in anywhere near the level of reguard, that I do the three of you. However, it seems to me that the hemholds resonance, would be a greater factor if it were a air/fuel charge in the plenum, rather than just air. Due to the added atoms, the resonance has a greater deal of mass to transmit , and or conduct it's wave. I would very much like to know if I am wrong though. Your input on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Louie P.

Yeah, this is great, if you can afford a $6K 6.2 LS, then another $4500 for the cam, Holley intake, and headers!! I can build a BBC from the junkyard for $4000 and make this kind of power, and still be able to grow more!!

Even with driveline loss accessories like water pump alternator and power steering and a good lockup torque converter this engine should put 440-460 horsepower to the backwheels and be capable of 10.80s to 10.60s in a car that weighs 3500 pounds with driver and still be able to cruise 75mph all day on a road trip and last and run good for many years if maintained well and if not constantly beat on

Went to the ap to watch the whole episode, and was disappointed to see that you took away the "watch last month's episodes for free with ads" functionality. I think these heads are stock I'm thinking if the heads were CNC ported and milled to increase compression to 11.0 to 11.5 it should pickup another 20-25 horsepower but 572 is a very respectable number and this motor with the right transmission and gearing should pull very well from 3000rpm to 7000rpm and be totally streetable

That’s like $93 per runner... F that ! The stock manifold will do 500-550 hp as well with a dull cam. I’ll keep a few bucks, go stage 2 cam, decap, tune and be happy.

I normally love Engine Masters, but this one was a bit pointless. You started with an intake you already admitted was overkill for the engine, and fitted an even bigger one. Of course the results would be like that. It may/would have been a different story if you started with one too small. That's like testing a plenty big enough exhaust then an even bigger one then stating bigger exhausts don't matter.

Incase people are here to learn a bit about what they're talking about, In a plenum style intake, the volume of the plenum, expressed in the # of times greater than your engine discplacement, has a direct impact on high rpm power output. Research papers have shown that you get negligible power gain past 10x your engine discplacement, but none of that matters if your intake runner diameter and runner lengths are whack. All the properties of the engine gotta match to perform best in the desired operating range The underlying theory is that the plenum chamber acts like a helmholtz resonator.

power increase becomes negligible past a plenum volume, 10x your engine discplacement. source: On an FSAE team where literally 400 teams study this very phenomenon. Works great for bike engines

@@Matt_T_Garner Not always. In the scenario in the episode it made almost no difference. It might make a bigger difference on bikes like Areg said because they rev to 15,000+ RPM.
