I recall Geroge Carlin talking about language being sanitized. Like shell shock is now PTSD (post traumatic disorder). Or special assignments is now assainations. Freedom fighters fight for freedom but then what do we call fire fighters? Republicans think a insurgency by white supremacists =freedom. ITs not exactly doublethink but it sure as hell is close. Or as a mother jones op ed back a few years ago took aim at how the trump administration used "defense" to describe the targeted killing (anther odd term- i mean you kill someone doesn't tht usually mean you did so deliberately?) of a Iranian general when no one was at war. Since when does defense mean attack first? Reminds me of the star trek episode where a grief stricken general in Starfleet justify a preemptive strike on Romulans because he believed they were violating a treaty. Jean Luc is shocked and confused as to why the captain, a respected one, keeps downplaying that what he did was illegal. Jean luc keeps pressing "we? Why are you saying we? i never agreed to anything, Starfleet didn't order you to attack romulans. did you have proof?"

My current favorite doublethink example is when one well-known individual stands in front of a fence, calls it a "wall" and then from that point on everyone else (those who support and those who oppose him) now refer to the fence as a "wall". It's fascinating to witness and frightening to know just how malleable the hivemind of the crowd full of automata can be.

I really like that you dont go the standard way of comparing 1984 to far-right/far-left acts of suppression and dictatorship like so many others, but look at the deeper picture about power structures itself. In a way i think it actually fits pretty good into the style of your videos, because you really have skill in deep diving into concepts and creating an engaging and thought provoking narrative/ worldview. Great video (so far, I'm only about half in at the moment)! You grew to be one of my favorite creators on the platform especially for your view on the topics you discuss, but I sadly sometimes have to postpone watching your stuff because it hits deeper than just surface entertainment. Hope you're doing well and your channel is surely going up again in no time!

It's really just that I get very annoyed by the constant use of "Orwellian" or "its like 1984" only to apply to surveillance or the like, so I really wanted to get into what feels like the real meat of it, the reason behind those things instead of just yelling about the execution. But, thank you for such kind words, I worry about how engaging I truly am, so I'm happy to see this one in a new wrapper, but with the same kind of writing, is being received well! I'm also happy to see that I grew to be one of your favorites; improving myself into that spot is much better to me that simply being there

In essence, Doublethink is something like faithful zeal to a fault. Things are true due to being true. It's why I still to a church function as an anti-theist just not sermons if I can't ask questions there is no value in hearing what I know I will reject. I have become a fixture there because I am so odd but it lets the odd people talk. A gay socialist anarchist polyamorous autistic furry at a moderately conservative Baptist function of wealthy white people is going to be weird. I even make rice for them and this is because I find a kind of perverse comedy in that they all like it despite it being the cheapest food they have had in decades but it makes them easier to talk to. What a range of ideas they have. One lady, the only person I can call a true freind talks a lot about how she does not believe in Hell and about how they should be more feminist and queer-friendly... it's wild. I bring up the rice because she has _"This is a struggle meal"_ she said _"Damn good one, not a damn one of them will know, not even if I tell them"_ she can think through all my ideas to the point she can focus on rice. The dish's secret is just caramelized onions and vermouth. Just roasted onions a a wine they can never really decern the flavor of because it is unpopular... and they are Baptists so many don't drink.

I do really appriciate the praise, it is super validating, but I always shy away from the actual title of "professor," just because at the end of the day I'm just a person with an opinion. @@LostTech-Priest same. Saw the movie first liked it enough, it was kinda odd, then read the comic, saw more reviews via online, learned a bit about anarchism and 80s British and reloaded that Americans do not get what Alan Moore was saying. Alan Moore was not talking about America. He was talking about British politics. Alan was not talking about Islamic terrorists and a 9/11 works (how could he) he was rehashing how a democratic government can turn to fascism willingly. Moore was not saying v for vendetta was a superhero comic in the traditional sense of good versus evil. He was arguing that political terror is still terror, that V while an anti-fascist was still a horrid person who was insane. Heck, the love forces the obligatory romance between the male and female leads (which gets worse when you realize v tortures Natalie Portman), but the movie’s ending is a romantic version of fascism dying. The comic is more blunt, less romantic, and ambiguous. The ending has the fascist government defeated but ..what next? There is no habitants that Britain will return to a safer place, Every has been brought to insanity and now seems to the next V-which actually may be a really bad moment.

I had a similar realization some time ago. The only things we can truly know are the things we personally experience, and that experience can be easily affected by others. I got into an argument with someone whose dad was a moon landing denier because I said, "Nobody here is ever going to walk on the moon themselves, so we have to take it on faith that the moon landing happened." Like, I believe it happened, but it's because I've been told it happened and being a moon landing denier is stupid and wrong in the social background I have. It is completely possible everyone involved was lying, but I won't be able to know because I'll never be able to meet them and judge for myself. I suppose there's the part of me that *wants* it to be true, but that's not going to matter to someone else whose reality is rooted in the moon landing being impossible. To that person, the truth is humans were unable to get to the moon in the 1950s (or whenever it happened, idk). To me, it's that they were. And to both of us, the other is wrong. Replace the moon landing with any sort of polarizing opinion, it still applies.

The depressing thing about this to me is the response to it. Some people will learn this and say "Well, I should learn all I can to compensate then," and others will say "then it doesn't matter what I do or don't learn." How we respond to the subjectivity of "truth" is more important than the actual truth I guess

I remember reading this in high school, and (spoilers) at the end of the book Winston describes his own death in third person. Hearing you talk about how only an individual can be in pain, and if he breaks and becomes one with the party then it is no longer his fears, it is “someone else’s brain” really just like tied it together for me, that his own death is one that can be clinically described as happening to someone else.

An incredible and thought provoking video. I think this take on 1984 is most likely closer to what Orwell intended to communicate. Most interpretations tend to be very surface level and revolve around the element of government control which is just the tip of the iceberg. This book will, in my opinion at least, never cease to be relevant, no matter what time we live in we are always under this ever present threat of human complacency, especially so now seeing how so many people have so little interest in seeking the truth (Christ that sounds like such a cliche). Come to think about it, things might have always been this way with the only difference now being the uncontrolled spread of opinion. I am grateful that you put the time and effort into making this video.

The core concept behind not succumbing to the seemingly insurmountable weight of the ease of a hand wave or the difficulty of suspending your belief of something entirely because it matches too well with what you already agree with is such a powerful one. Seeing the prevalence of using blurrily defined abstract concepts to achieve this ease is one of the most frustrating things to see, and the growth of 'debate bro'-style content made me really pessimistic for a large span of my time in undergrad. I think it was exurb1a's video on Absurdism that got my mind out of that rut, and this video helped me connect the dots on why it did. It formed largely as a counterpoint to Existentialism in saying "yeah nothing might matter, but something might matter. honestly, who cares if there even is something that matters, I'll still try to find it". I don't think it works as a counterpoint to Doublethink as a concept, but on a felt level. Most of the drive from it comes from feeling a desire for meaning and deciding that feeling is valid without thought. In a sense it is a revolt against the pressures imposed by thought. I think the act of asking one to consider ones self as valuable enough to persist through a painful existence simply to continue a potential, and in some eyes unlikely, end of a search for meaning does work to use the same concept employed by big brother but in feeling rather than thought. If I feel I currently have no real meaning, and therefore I feel everything COULD be my real meaning. If real meaning could be anything, then any action not of rebellion against your situation for not presenting it to you is one against your self interest. I think the power exists in that is that it re-frames the individual at the center of their drive, if you truly look for purpose you need to see things for what they are which would be an impossibility while considering one's self as the same as their cause. I feel like this fluctuated between addressing the mental state caused by Doublethink the conditions leading to it in a kinda meandering way but I felt some connection between the ideas and this is my rambly exploration.

More serious thoughts time. Plato teaches that democracy always devolves next into tyranny. As members of a democracy, we have to act remembering that we are just one step away from tyranny at all times. Aristotle teaches that “no man becomes a tyrant to get out of the cold.” Certain leaders will claim to seize government in the name of providing for our wants or needs, so we must be wary that those who rise to power on such claims may be after power for power’s sake. As Orwell teaches us, there are those who think power is an end…

Historically, the evidence that societies that fall into this cultural cancer self-destruct... eventually, is no comfort, no cure for the pain. I thank you for this. Hope demands that your words will reach enough ears, inspire enough hearts to reject nihilism and reach out in kindness to those around them. It can only win against the isolated and alone that has no hope of succor to turn to.

That's one of the hardest parts to really hold in my mind, that just because my country seemed to rule the world for a while doesn't exclude it, and maybe even makes it more likely to happen here. That image of "what once was" but never really was that drives it forward. I hope we can all care for each other throughout. I worry about my own capacity to do so at times, but a crucial aspect of Winston's manipulation and end was that he was alone, so we should do our best to prevent anyone being alone

Like I wanna specialize in oil paints cause they dry slower and don’t have to worry about the paint I set aside to dry out, but I wanna specialize in gouache cause it dries faster and I can apply the next layer more quickly, I don’t have time to specialize in both. This is something that’s always missing in these conversations about double think.

Recognizing it as a contradiction is an immediate removal from doublethink. You're considering two options and truly weighing which makes one more valuable than the other. They aren't fully right or wrong, but simply compromises. Doublethink would be simply choosing whichever is more convenient in the moment without a thought of dedicating to one at all, asserting that it is the objectively correct one, and then the next momemt saying the opposite. In very short words, being aware of a contradiction at all defeats it
@kevin4061

this was a really good and terrifying refresher on a book i haven't read since high school lol. maybe it's just me being self centered, but *damn* if $95 million spent in less than a year on anti trans ads doesn't sound like the two minutes of hate...... even the changing of the target from gay people to trans people. just.... hhhhhhhhhhh

Ther is the galaxy quest quore "never give up , never surrender" that while cheesy, yes. Its over when its given up, and thank god said people in power have often a gfragile ego that very much can be hurt, maybe manipulated, that make people harder aware sell progressive stuff harder as people still, have power if they really can get behind something, or at least have a chance of something, whatever, also the system is broken and things probably need to change a lot and peoples relations if apathy is that dangerous and voting is taking as comfort, not a duty. And at least looking to the picture and not ignoring it. And ignorance doesnt make happy, if, ther ewouldnt be so many people be able to have fears exploited, if they were happy grounded people. Dunno but its probably time to educate people harder in basic people arguments nudging to have to think about it, And Truth , justice, compassion, love, can you have objective proof, its constructs, , but that can made be real if people believe. Ok i think it needs with something, you gotta have one opinion, start with something to be behind and correct if you have to. Ther ar ethings that can have meaning regardless, there can be some . I think thats the answer, we really need more room to trust in each other more i guess to, yeah. Also i really reccomand the serie sLexx thats really unique and good and , philosophical, if very horny. And the episode brigadoom is great, what i really find inspiting its so cartoonish bad in a cartoonish bad universe thats , really bad and we follow Three people still trying to fing a home, be horny i guess and do actually kill the divine shadow. Its dark but, good. Also philosophical pretty interesting stuff. Like the main trio is inspired by no exit. ther eis a name of the rose episode, and its a fun series. Plus the brunnen G song is really inspiring.
