The shame of Yong's casting is, he is a fine actor. He probably could have played Tomizawa or the creepy trenchcoat guy and done a great job, and not been completely distracting. Meanwhile the guy who voice Sojiro in P5 would be PERFECT casting and he's all over the game as random Hawaii background NPCs. Plus whoever played Keith David in this game was not up to par, honestly.

Three months late, but I think Yong was actually surprisingly good at being Kiryu’s voice except for karaoke. Towards the end he really pulls something (in my opinion) similar to Kuroda’s voice, and honestly I think his acting just got better as the recordings went on lmao I actually couldn’t name any VAs I’d see as Kiryu in English apart from Yong and Darryl, because I’ve already heard them as such. I was pretty shocked how Waikiki is modeled as accurately as it is. Like, I know Yokohama and Kamurocho are also pretty accurate to their respective real life cities, but having actually been to Waikiki beach, its pretty cool to experience noticing the exact hotel I stayed at when Kasuga walked by it at the beginning.

I live in Japan and when I go to Kamurocho in the game I feel like I’m actually in Kabukicho. My husband can send me photos of Yokohama that look exactly like the game. It’s insane. Samurai and Desperado were fantastic. Every male party member either had lasso or fire arrow. The movement in the combat made it so much less of a chore compared to 7. I had a similar scenario with the quiz. Saw the space one. "I know space". First question. "I do not know this". I didnt do anything else but Dondokko Island when it unlocked. Ichiban just disappeared for 29 days. The funniest part is Chi-chan mentioning finishing up the video. Took her a month to edit the video which is a funny headcanon.

I made it a personal rule to learn the Action Star's double damage move and Kunoichi's Substitution Jutusu on most of the cast because the damage was insane. I loved the new inheritance system, it actually felt like you were coming up with new strategies without having to grind for 100 hours first
@weebcraft682910 ай бұрын
Everyone gravitating to the cool jobs kinda makes me sad for a lot of the moves in the less used jobs falling to the wayside though. For example: War Cry from Pyrodancer js actually a stronger Dragon Dance since it lasts longer and contributes to Tag damage. Zhao has the STRONGEST single target physical skill in the game (Dragon Ascension). However, due to Zhao coming late so people dont bother levelling him, or they immediately swap him away from Gangster, literally NO ONE knows just how insane this skill is. Everyone uses Spinning Queen, but actually Tennis Ace has a way stronger AOE thats the same size but trades Charm for Guard Break Freelancer now gets 2 Extreme damage skills. While German Suplex is still meh, the one you get earlier, Atomic Drop, can be the strongest single target grab skill in the game with the right build. The strongest AOE for males isn't actually Lasso or Giga Swing, but Tilt-a-whirl from Linebacker, which can also double as good single target damage. But because of people dismissing Linebacker, no one knows this move exists. Geodancer gets the only Extreme Magic skill in the game. When you transfer it to Idol, you get a really strong single target mage that gives Idol something to do apart from being a Healbot.

I think Like a Dragon should go to more places around the world. It would be great if Ichiban's travels always take him worldwide, but there's always something going on back in his homeland related to whatever he's discovered in the new place. It makes it feel like a never ending hero's journey, venturing across the world, seeing new sights, fixing new things, making the oppressive dark world around him brighter one step at a time.

I imagine if they go anywhere next it will be closer to home, like China or South Korea. With how important the Liumang and Geomijul are in Ichiban’s story it would make sense (though I would love to see Ichiban go to France or Ireland lmao)
@Volvagia192710 ай бұрын
@@GamerNumNums Hmm. If either of those are coming next, I think Ichiban would still be a party member, but if either of those are the next game, Zhao or Joongi would, surprise, get the party leader position. I doubt that's actually happening until Game 10, though. Because...vague spoilers that even the TV Tropes page hasn't included yet, there's SOMETHING they haven't revealed yet about Bryce. They explicitly say he "hasn't aged in 30 years" in one scene and Kiryu even says "so he's a monster" (presumably as in a monster movie sense, not just morally), but that (and how Lani's story just...kind of doesn't add up) are just left to hang. They don't even have whatever is going on with him be a super mode moment in the final boss fight. And they don't let him die, so...yeah, he's probably Game 9's villain too. And I'm thinking this is actually a twist that's been seeded since the start of the Kasuga saga but: My guess is that Kashiwagi, Lau Ka Long, Andre Richardson AND Bryce Fairchild? When we see those four in the Kasuga saga? ALL. VAMPIRES. Not all villains, but all vampires. The first three (and maybe Mine as well...?) got turned by a vampire who was following behind Kiryu in Yakuza 3 (Kiryu being observed (and rejected) as a candidate to be the new vampire king of Japan? Fun reveal if true), and Bryce being turned at an unknown time.

Shinada was basically just a happenstance fall guy for the match-fixing by Fujita, the owner of his baseball team. Kurosawa used Fujita to make the Omi a shit ton of money that he could leave to Aizawa, who he wanted to inherit the Omi. I think Shinada was basically supposed to represent the innocent civilians that end up involved in yakuza politics; he only relates to the plot by sheer chance.

Glad you mentioned the way the series keeps on writing people out of the story for no good reason. I constantly hear people say "well, duh, they can't keep every character around, you just want fan service, but it's more realistic that way" but I swear those people must have either missed the point or have severe brain damage, because in what way is this more realistic? I get that writers shouldn't bring back characters for no reason other than fan service, but a good writer also doesn't just suddenly forget their previous characters. Wrap up their stories in satisfying ways, show us what happened to them, and _then_ you can leave them alone. Besides, even when they don't play an active role anymore, an important, well-written character leaves their mark on their world and the people inhabiting it. Small references here and there have never hurt anybody, just _anything_ to acknowledge the fact that they still exist, or at the very least _used to_ if they're dead. People see fan service and immediately freak out, but there is nothing wrong with giving fans what they want as long as it's not forced or excessive. Just like everything else in a story, it simply has to serve a purpose, this one being consistency and world building. IW may have some writing issues in other areas, but this one thing it did so much better than pretty much any other Yakuza game aside from Y0 that it's still one of my favorites story-wise.

I feel what you said about never returning to LaD7. Because although I absolutely fucking loved every second of it, this game is such an incredible improvement. It doesn't mean I love 7 less than I did at the time. But I love 8 so much more. And regarding Yong, look, I don't even think it was that bad. Sure, some characters were weirdly cast (particularly Daigo and Akiyama), but the directors and actors were so coordinated that they were still able to make it work somewhat. When Kiryu has a sick fit, Yong definitely sounded pretty sick. When Akiyama got mad, he definitely was mad. Were they the best? Maybe not. Did they *do their* best? Absolutely. The directors put their whole directussies into their work too.

Stephen Fu is an amazing voice actor, and Ryuki from AI: Nirvana Initiative and Sadamoto from LJ are big proof, but he just doesn’t fit as Akiyama to me. He lacks the sort of suave/sleazy vibes Koichi Yamadera gives to Akiyama. (SPOILER WARNING) The Akiyama crumbs they gave us is not enough. I need him in the story and we need a Gaiden like game for him.

it is the best RGG game hands down. I was salty about the MTX controversy and the translation accusations but once I bought it I didn't refund and continued to play for 200 hrs and loved the whole thing

Kiryu's voice would of been strange if he was voiced by a black man. But a cool black party member would be a cool adition to ichiban's party.

Literally my favorite game series ever. In all of gaming... I've been gaming since OG NES release and on, my mom was an Attari kid. We both did arcades a bunch. Yakuza is my favorite gaming series in all of gaming from NES and on. I'm not joking. Not everyone will love it, but it is unironically taking me back to my childhood. The first time I played Mario, Metroid, Zelda on NES and SNES, my first Ocarina play threw, ect. I've never played a series with such well-crafted continuous story and character development, were talking 8 games and spin offs that all go hard and play off each other, like old school comics or something. Story continuity. Also, no other game ever has contained so many different emotions successfully conveyed without throwing things off. You know how sometimes you see a movie, it's trying to blend humor and sadness, but the balance is just off? It makes it all feel wrong. Yakuza can make me tear up as a 34 year old man, from happiness, sadness, romance. It has absolute balls to the wall action, it has that over-the-top ridiculous humor, it tugs at your heartstrings, it has drama, mystery, noire, jokes, sarcasm. Like everything in one game. Normally I play a game and it's like oh this is a action game with humor. Yakuza literally does everything, mini games, incredible side quests. It's my favorite series ever dude. You owe it to yourself to buy kiwami1 on sale and give it a shot! Everyone says start with Yakuza 0 but actually imo start with Kiwami 1 and 2, then 3 and on until Infinite Wealth. Even the side games are amazing imo, Lost Judgement go hard af!!!

New subscriber! I’m in Japan. I’ve lived here half my life and speak both Japanese and English. I love love loved LAD 7, and the new characters, especially Han Joongi and Zhao. I was so excited to get to play as Seonhee, as well. The story is incredible, and maybe I’m a cry baby, but I cry every time I play the game. It’s such an emotional, heartfelt game. There is sooooo damn much to do, so much you can grind and so much Kiryu is asking to do. The only complaint I have is not actually wanting to get good at mahjong, koi koi, Oicho Kabu, or play all the gambling games, just to satisfy Kiryu. 😂 Edited to add: I love your breakdown of the characters. A+. I’d love to hear your thoughts of the individual characters, your breakdown of how the characters became how the are. You’re very insightful!

I do feel like Infinite Wealth is a huge improvement in every aspect over LAD EXCEPT story. No spoilers obviously, but to me it felt like they didn’t have clear direction on who they want the antagonist to be and we end up with characters that do not feel as well developed as Aoki from LAD. There are also some pretty weird character inconsistencies and the supporting cast feels generally weaker than LAD’s. There are some stand-out individual character moments, but in terms over overall quality of writing, it felt like a step-down to me. Everything else in this game is practically perfect and it’s still my absolute favorite entry in the series, but I couldn’t help but feel somewhat disappointed in the story by the time it reached its conclusion.

To add to your thoughts about Yongs Kiryu voice, people who complain about voice acting for Japanese media even though if you showed them some of the best acting in the world they'd still say it "sounds terrible" They often compare the sound of a voice to bad delivery or bad acting when those two things aren't the same. Yong does mostly fine on his acting and delivery, but you can tell he's just too young for Kiryu and his ability to sound tough is actually holding him back a bit. He's fine. He gets a lot better I think in the second half of the game, but he's not like some abysmal performance that some people think he is.
@brandonsclips774110 ай бұрын
(Spoilers) To add to this as I've played more, There's a moment in the game where Kiryu relates what's happening to another girl as how Haruka first felt when she was all alone. He has a moment where he essentially says that they need to be that girls hero right now. That they need to be the light out of her darkness, and I think he captures Kiryu's soft, stoic love for his daughter quite well. There's other moments like I think there are some walk and talks around the city in Japan where he gets Kiryus weird, poetic tangents super good. Again he was miscast, but he ain't a bad actor. Ironically I think he plays villians a lot better than he plays heroes -granted I've only SEEN his other villian roles, but he could have played one of the games villains just fine.

Randomly saw Yakuza: Like A Dragon on PS Plus. Before that, I had never played a Yakuza game in my life, and all i knew about it was Kiryu singing Baka Mitai. Downloaded it, played it and it genuinely changed my outlook on life. I absolutely adore Ichiban as a protagonist. Its so refreshing to see a MC who is not dark and sulky or has some horrible past he has to overcome. Hes just a genuinely kind and caring person and would do anything for his friends who, by the end of the game , become his new family he never had. And Infinite Wealth is just as fun! If anyone is on the fence about playing Like A Dragon, do yourself a favor and pick it up!

I agree with you on Kiryu's English dub, but also want to thank you for talking about it in a constructive criticism sort of way. I don't think he's a bad voice actor, just that they should've gone with a different voice for a 50 yr old legend whose seen a lot of crap go down in his life. In an alternate timeline, we could've had Kevin Conroy (R.I.P. legend) as the voice of Kiryu. I just imagine his iconic Batman voice, but with some tweaks, and it would fit Kiryu really well.

I got yakuza 0-6 for like 6.24 AUD each, plus 7 for like 18 bucks. I sure ain't paying any more money for DLC for an already expensive game, when I can just wait for another game I want to play to go on sale. Despite the lack of post game content I did enjoy the game from start to finish. The new jobs were all fun but Samurai and Kunoichi were so OP that I just made everyone that, except Nanba and Tomi, I made them hosts. I also put Cho back as mafia after I got the samurai skills for him. All three jobs are OP since they excel at fire and/or gun which most enemies are weak to. Plus Samurai's iza shutsujin move is such a quick way to fully buff your attack when you've got two samurai on your team. (I played the Japanese version so I'm not sure what it's called in English) Outside of the jobs it seems the game really rewarded the player's exploration and experimenting with everything they get their hands on. I felt OP and I didn't even use the workshop much, I just used the equipment I found in Hawaii and in the 2 dungeons and I was mostly strong from those. Plus ichiban's laser and the countless delivery help people were an extra layer of damage goodness. I put nearly 100 hours into it and there are still Sujimon masters I haven't beaten, side quests I haven't finished and equipment I haven't found. honestly I was going to 100% it if it wasn't locked behind a paywall. Apart from that my only major complaint is that there isn't much point in grinding beyond level 53 (which I think is the final boss level) I was the same level as the final boss and I still felt overleveled as I could kill almost any non-boss encounter before it could get a turn. Even though most of that is because I could just summon and deal 1000 damage for $5000/500000 yen. It feels like there's a difficulty spike a little before the halfway point and then it's pretty easy from there, and the weapons you get from just exploring are so strong that grinding materials to craft weapons just doesn't mean much. (though I felt that way with the last game as well) I do still think that this game is a lot better than 7, It does a lot of things better but maybe the bigger scale of the game just made some of the issues already in that game just stick out to me. Luckily the game's positives are way greater than the negatives though.
