In this week’s episode, we discuss being a lazy photographer and a trap that should be avoided. It's easy to fall into a routine or a certain way of doing things, but if you're not careful, it can suffocate your creativity and progression in photography. I've been heavily into landscape photography for the past 9 years, but 7 of those years were spent entrenched in this trap. And, I firmly believe that if had known what was happening back then, I would have easily been able to correct this and progress much quicker. I hope you enjoy this week's video and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark

Over fifty years ago I was a professional event photographer. I put the camera down for several decades, but once I retired, I began with mirrorless. I too enjoy landscape photography and I generally try to create photo essays which I post on my blog. One of my most favorite type of pictures include serendipity, i.e. a section of drainpipe with a graffiti smiley face surrounded by a flowering weed. Thanks for all your inspiration.

Hey Mark, I guess I'm sitting about 33 years in. I fell in love with photography in the summer of '89 when I saw photos appear in the darkroom. I often still feel like a beginner and know that as much as I'm learning and growing, I still have a long ways to go. I have a broad range of experience, but that doesn't always equate expertise, so I'm still working on that.

Excellent video Mark. I’ve been photographing landscapes for about 12 years. The problem I had at first was I was working 60+ hours a week. Now that I’ve retired, I’ve been trying to get out more. I’m transitioning from the ‘grand landscapes’ to more intimate landscapes. My biggest problem is seeing the small shots in the large!

“…as long as you have a camera in hand..”. So true! I’m just getting back to photography after about a 15-20 year break and feel like I’ve forgotten everything. I started with film and did make the switch to digital when my camera equipment was stolen but never got back to the experiments I did when I shot film. I’m looking forward to getting to know my current camera better and getting back out with planned shoots!

7+ years and I am doing something similar to what you’re talking about……stepping out of my comfort zone and into what I call my “experimentation” zone - playing with ICM and creating abstracts - which is something I’ve never done and also the “intimate” landscape……rather than the grand scene finding those special details. I’m finding I had “writers block” so to speak with my photography and I wasn’t even feeling much inspiration to go out and shoot. These new techniques are offering me the inspiration that I was missing. Thx again for a great video!

I’m in my second year and I will try every type and genre of photography I can. Doing so has made me look at things completely differently and it has expanded my creativity. Sometimes things work and sometimes they fail but unless you give them a go you will never know. The beauty of photography I believe is that it doesn’t cost anything to make mistakes, it’s what you learn from making them and putting them right that matters. When you get things right it is so rewarding. There is too much going on around us to religiously stick to one type of photography, give anything a try when the opportunity arises is my motto 😉

Hi Mark, been taking pix since about 1958 when my dad taught me B&W darkroom work when I was 8. Was a yearbook photog in high school, with a rig consisting of a Kodak Retina 35mm folding camera with an outboard rangefinder in the flash shoe and a tiny light meter in a second flash shoe I epoxied on top of the rangefinder. Bought a Canon FT SLR in 1968 as I graduated high school and used that through college with an 85mm f/1.8 lens. Taught myself color printing in the seventies when home paper and chemistry became available, but put down my camera in the late 1990s as my young daughter hated being photographed. Took up landscape (waterscape?) photography around 2003 as I became engaged to a painter after my wife died (and my daughter decided she wanted me to find her a new mom). Shifted to digital SLRs shortly after, as it gave me control of the whole process. Just went mirrorless this summer with the R7 and I'm in love again. After decades of my DSLRs getting bigger and heavier with each upgrade, I'm now in a rig that's actually smaller than my old film SLR while many times as capable, and with controls that I can customize to make it feel like my old FT. (Fortunately, my artist wife is delighted with her photographer protege.) And yes, I've found myself shooting new kinds of things. While I had gotten focused on water surfaces after finding folks liked that kind of picture, I'm now shooting anything that comes in front of me, even experimenting with birds in flight!

I purchased a used box camera at a thrift store 59 years ago when I was eight. I have been photographing every since. I am a sports and news photographer. I started watching your channel because I am nearing retirement age and am looking at expanding my photographic horizons. For example, we only use photoshop at work and not lightroom because the corporation does not want to pay for hard drives to store the images and catalog on for lightroom. I also started looking at several different photographers feeds to see if I would ever want to start my own photography channel. Appreciate your straight forward approach to teaching.

I'm currently 8 months into my photography. I bought a Sony a7iii. The first lens I bought for my camera to use along side the kit lens, a 28-70mm, was the Tamron 70-300mm telephoto. I'm happy I did, I use it a lot. In these 8 Months I've taken over 4000 photos. I'm one who likes to shoot a lot and pick through them afterward for the ones I really want to edit and post to my various social medias and occasionally get a few printed. I absolutely love photography and see myself doing this for a long time. Thanks for the videos and the tips you've given.

Totally agree Mark, have just started using my telephoto more (actually the lens I use for bird photography) to explore more compressed and localised compositions. I have bought and sold so many wide angle lenses over the years because I rarely felt I could get an image I was happy with as opposed to the standard 24-120mm and telephoto. You will enjoy the macro lens, it opens up many opportunities for exploration, the hardest thing is remembering to 'think tiny' not just 'think close up'. Enjoy. Been doing landscape photography most of my life, on and off again. Last 6 years dived back in, in a serious way using tripod and sony a7r 3, and more recently a7r 4. Appreciate your channel, you often confirm the things I've learned, and often give me new ideas to try out. Many Thanks! 50mm is a good compromise for the wide angle lens' busyness. I mostly use 90mm though (sometimes ZoomG, when in the tall old growth trees). My go-to subject is white water rapids, time lapse. (in Oregon). I've found that you can adjust the ISO, to dial in the Time-slice windows, without sacrificing Aperture sharpness. (much easier than the Shutter setting, for burst mode). I've done the pan-blur thing too in the tall trees: a circular spin, can give a "North Star-Pole" effect too. Sometimes quite stunning, the green, blue and black circular trails. I've tried out a new technique lately: Spot-meter Linked to the Focus box. Been nailing the White-water exposures much more often since doing that. Definitely worth exploring if your camera supports it. PS I get some good abstracts, with my 90mm macro. Also been trying to intentionally "unfocus" with it lately (with 16+ Aperture) -- this gives interesting watercolor effects sometimes, by focusing close-in with distance colorful blocking.

Thank you for the videos Mark. I picked up photography a little over 2 years ago. Your videos have been super beneficial. I've wanted to buy a wide angle for those "grand landscapes", but just haven't pulled the trigger and always used the 18-55mm on my D3500 and now the 24-120mm on my Z6ii. Anytime I feel stagnant I go through social media and look at types of photos that I haven't done before or editing techniques. I think I've started to figure out my "style" and just trying to expand it into different genres. I love this video!

5 years in (started with a pocket camera). This year picked up a 17-40 f/4 and then a 16-35 f/2.8. Yes, I was obsessed with wide angle lens for most of the summer. Finally, I got some sense back in my head and now my go-to lens is the 24-105 f/4. I do like using the 16-35 f/2.8 at 35mm for macro shots. the f/4 isn't the same (not as good) as f/2.8 for background blurriness. I shoot mainly in forest areas, no mountains.

I am at the stage of getting brave enough to realize and explore photographs that make me happy; also to realize that it is the process of photography and not just the photograph that I love about photography. Oh, I am well beyond 7+ years, but I didn't really start taking photos for myself until I retired from working full-time. 1-2 years into this journey as a hobby. Started with a repairable Canon T2i that just needed about 20 minutes of attention with a screwdriver and began snapping shots: pets, wildlife, landscapes, and some I guess would be considered abstract. I basically take pictures of what I like to see, entirely for myself. Your videos about lens choices, composition, editing and storytelling have been extremely helpful to me. I came away from a recent Yellowstone trip with a few lucky shots, a few successful landscape images and 1-2 that others have told me look like they belong in an art show.

I've been at it for 4 years now. I started with birds and landscapes, then found I love waterfalls. Here in southern Minnesota we've had two years of drought and dry waterfalls, so I've really enjoyed chasing aurora borealis and doing star trails. I still do my majority of photos with wildlife, which is great because the deer rut is on right now, and bald eagle season will kick off in January here. Like you, I've gotten away from the grand wide landscapes and do much more with the 100-400. One of my favorite autumn photos this year was of across this large valley where a road cut through the trees. It was taken at 600mm and probably at least 2 miles away.

Milestones: - Planned photography outings (landscape or street photography) with a good Friend of mine: we have been learning so much during preparation, interaction when looking for the best composition, and afterwards when sharing some of our photos… the Way is the goal ;-) - Camera on a daily basis, whatever the wheather, mood, … but keeping some control by choosing the lens of the day - at best a prime, in order to walk, ie to actively compose -,… - Printing out my own photos, which is a recent game changer: Soft proof editing from start (with C1) with several outputs/papers for my printer, usually a matte (carefully chosen for the subject/fine art print) and a satin (for daily use/reference print). And the immense pleasure to handle my prints and share them with Friends and Family, and starting some photo boxes (later to work on a book?). - next one: to upgrade to XT5 for more creativity when cropping images, which is crucial with composition, without loosing too much in resolution (starting from 40Mpx instead of 26 for XT3 and 4). - ultimate one: Workshop with a sound pro photographer, like i did, many years ago, during a diving cruise with interesting challenges such as: ‘’During this dive, you will shoot no more than 10 photos’’, so powerful for creativity. Many thanks Mark, one of your best YT vids. Greetings 🇨🇭eric

Returning to photography after 20 years as a military photojournalist - 1977-1997. When I left the service digital was just coming into reality. I returned to photography in about 2012 with the Nikon V-1. Today, I am finally feeling comfortable, learning digital was a great experience especially with the online educational pieces. Thanks for helping me along.

I am a amateur photographer involved in various types from product, portrait, event and nature and landscape photography for the last 50+ years. Film processing, printing and digital processing using Lightroom and Photoshop. Now I just take a couple cameras when I go out. Film photography has taken a back seat as film processing providers are few and far away and I cannot develop in our condominium Association ( septic systems) I enjoy your videos so keep them coming!

Great video. I’ve been into photography since I was perhaps 10 years old. So that would be 40 years of photographic experience behind the shutter now. Digital changed everything. From how we process images, make prints and all the magical things that we can do with photoshop that were never possible in the film days. Digital changed a great number of things but not the core concepts and techniques that one needs to make a great photograph. Keep making your wonderful videos, my wife who is not a photographer enjoys your videos as do I and is always amazed at all the things that get taken into consideration when taking the image. She frequently nudges me and asks, “did you know about that”, frequently the answer is yes. But she’s always amazed by the videos please keep up the great work

Hi Mark. I recovered my interest in photography 12 years ago while recovering from cancer, discovering a love of close ups of the abstract images in the bark of Australian indigenous trees. Really appreciated this video. I’m actually more into close ups of nature than I am of wide angle landscapes along with ICM and impressionist type photography. But I still get a lot out if your videos. I was intrigued by your divided landscape images. They reminded me of a concept called the “edge effect”. There’s a podcast on the topic on the Hidden Brain podcast which you might appreciate.

After many years of travel photography with an SLR, I became more serious about photography when I switched to digital twenty years ago and learned post-processing skills. Now I do “local photography” - gardens, woodlands, wetlands, wildlife and an occasional automobile meet-up. This takes me from macro to telephoto. Thanks for the good ideas on more ways to expand!

I have been doing photography for many decades, primarily in film. There was an unfortunate hiatus for about 10 years but have now jumped into the digital age in the last 1-2 years. I thought it would be like riding a bike and I would pick things up quickly, but that has not been the case. It has been more like starting from scratch. I agree that challenging oneself with new types of photography is great. I have recently tried doing some cityscape shots and each time I go out I learn something new about our local city and about my relationship with my camera. Really enjoy your videos in all aspects. Your tutelage has helped me immensely. Thanks.

Had a entry level camera for years but didn't get serious until April 2022 on a trip to Ireland when I saw the possibilities of landscape photography. Updated my gear and started going out as much as possible. Attended workshop in Yosemite last week (worthless) so booked another for Death Valley in December.

Good video Mark, very thought provoking. I'm in my 2nd to 3rd year of photography and like you the big grand scenes have been a feature of my work. Recently however this is changing to more focused objects.

I was a ‘photographer’ in high school 30+ years ago and only picked the camera back up again 2 years ago. Boy has digital changed the genre, I was used to rolling my own film (mostly b & w) and developing and printing my own images. Every image was precious then, but today “they’re just pixels”!!

Good point[s] ... but keep in mind that there are degrees of "uncomfortable" that may be at minimum counterproductive. While a replacement word doesn't immediately occur to me, I'd suggest that an alternative be found.

I've been trying "serious" photography for 10-12 years, but have seen the largest improvements in my technique and photos within the last 4 years or so, when I started taking a higher proportion of artsy photos, going out specifically for photography, upgrading my gear, etc. Your channel has really helped me analyze certain aspects of photography where I could feel the photo wasn't quite right but I couldn't exactly determine why it wasn't working. Thanks much for all the excellent tips, pointers, and clear breakdowns of why you do things in a particular way!

Hi Mark, I’m 17 and I bought my first camera (a 1970s SLR) a bit more than a year ago. I shoot 95% of my portfolio worthy images on film. I currently own four lenses, all primes, a 20mm, a 24mm, a 50mm, and 200mm. The 200 and the 24 are my favorite of the bunch; the 200 in particular is so much fun.

Hy Mark, great video as always. I go seriously focused about 18 months ago on 3 different types of photography. Astro, landscape and floral. Landscape has be come my main go to. Nightscapes with startrails and the milkyway come in second. Then, hey with can't resist a great shot of flowers. I'd say I am just starting to hit my stride where you now know enough to creat and that generates ideas and concepts for future images. Now that I'm getting the hang of Lr I can invision an image before I shoot it. The technical aspects of photography I haven't mastered. Like exposure equivalent and storing up or down to be more efficient while on location. I just look at my histogram and make adjustment with test shots until I get what I want. As for wide or zoom. I have a Tamron 18- 400 f3.5- 6.3 lens. I basically us that kens for everything. It is an all in one adjust as you go lens. It is not as high quality as prime lense or som high end lens, but it makes some amazing images. In fact the city I live in is using my fall images in thier communications dept. I also just sold 5 images of a 100 ur old farm.. hey if it work that is all that matters. Good stuff bud.

Great video. I’ve been interested in photography since I was very young but it it was always in the background with other things in my life. I’ve been retired for 10 years and I’ve spent a lot more time shooting and learning since then. I also found that shooting the more intimate landscape images is more satisfying than the grand view. I think one reason is that it has become much more difficult to find locations that haven’t been shot to death and thus it is more difficult to create a new image. With the advent of social media and good quality cell phone cameras we are literally bombarded. You are certainly in good company- I attended a seminar by Art Wolfe on shooting small scale abstracts and immediately recognized the value of it. Thanks for all of your videos- I find them helpful and engaging.

Very inspirational. I have perhaps 9 to 10 lenses for my camera and purchased my very first Zoom lens last year. The zoom is a 70 to 200 and I have used it for maybe 4 to 5 test snaps. I was shocked over how heavy the lens is, even though this is supposed to be the lightest of the telephoto zooms (a big change compared to even fast primes). That said, this video has inspired me to take the lens out of the closet and put it in my bag. Thank you.

Mark, love your channel. Started photography in the 80's Minolta film camera shooting my children sports, family events, vacations and landscape. My equipment was stolen when digital cameras started to hit the scene. Knew film was on the way out and digital was the new technology but not advanced enough to my liking so gave up photography until the Nikon D70 arrived. I love many subjects to shoot, from travel, landscape in USA national parks, grandchildren, sports and abstract. Hardly an expert photographer just trying to get better every time I shoot. Still make plenty of mistakes. That is what I love about photography it seems like your always learning be it a new camera or new software.....preservation of memories.

Always a pleasure to follow your videos. im in my 2nd year of my photografy journey. I have to say, a dont stuck into a specific focalrange dispite i dont use longer focalranges that often i "should" do. The thing i most strugle with is, to get good images in my local aerea. I often got good images when i up into the mountains or so, but at home, its more challaning. So i also bought a marcro lense, and this is realy fun i have to say.

Thank you for the videos Mark, new subscriber and have been catching up with your older content. Photography has been a hobby for, good grief, 60 years. First pictures for high school in the late 50’s. Still have my first SLR, a Minolta SR1. It went with me to Korea in 1962, and off and on until the DSLR came along. Shoot local sport car tracks, landscapes, macro, birds. Master of none however. Mirrorless now, and BW film with a 70’s film SLR.
