Hi Jason and brooke. I knew about trying the wood but I never knew that you went back and took the char off I just thought you leave it on there. But it looks really nice. When I built my bed with the railroad ties I used brackets with lag bolts to connect the post together. But I used a long drill bit and drilled down to drive rebar down into the ground also. So it was connected at the ground and also connected to each other with the brackets. I really miss gardening...

Stager the joints at the ends so when you drive rebar through to the ground on the end, you catch one beam going each direction. If you do two levels stger in the opposite direction for the next level, like laying bricks. Think like a log cabin.

Zerk continues to improve = great news! That's a wonderful way to start the week! MaryCarl is so devoted to her babies - as are her parents. So many admirable traits in this devoted family. That technique is labor intensive now but it's longevity and durability will be rewarding. Years ago I visited a friend in Canada that was searching for a paint for his newly built barn. Dealing with so much snow he was concerned the wood wouldn't last. I suggested the shoshugibon technique. After some research he bought the equipment and three of us started the process. I did the lower six feet, they installed scaffolding and torched the upper areas. The results were stunning. He later decided to torch the inside walls and replaced his fireplace mantle with torched wood. We torched the barn in the mid 1970s. Almost fifty years later his barn remains intact. Since Jason's kitchen garden doesn't have to deal with feet of snow for many months every year I anticipate it could thrive for over 70yrs.

In 1972 we had raised bed gardens (6) that were 4' by 16' by 2', and it was the best way that we could have gardening. We had one garden that was 50%/50% top soil and sand that was where we planted our sweet potatoes. We tried to rotate crops on the other five gardens. One thing that I learned is to space the gardens wide enough to be able to get a wheelbarrow and lawnmower through and around the gardens. We raised enough food to be able to share with others. 💝 NOTE: I used 2" by 12" pressured treated lumber and lined the sides with 9 mil plastic. I had no problem with the pressure treated lumber effecting the plants in the garden.

Consider stagering the logs. Overlap one long side top piece on a short bottom end piece. More stable this way than each piece even on top of each other. The charring method seals the wood. No need for anything else. It's a Japanese style of preservation.

Praise God and the vet that Zerk is doing better. MaryCarl must be so relieved. So glad that the Portégé garden is starting. I used to be a landscape designer, so I’ve been waiting with great anticipation to see what you guys will do. Nice hat Jason! The North wind is part of a Polar Vortex that is hitting the US this week. Where I live in Louisville, KY we are expecting temperatures as low as -2F below zero. I am 63 years old and have never experienced any temperature lower than 12F in my life. I am having to bring my Turkey and all of the chickens into my house for the week.😮Talk about a mess😢!! Jason if you want very stable sides for your raised beds, but don’t want rebar showing get a drill bit the size of rebar and drill all the way through the bottom log and hammer the rebar down into the soil so that only 4 inches of rebar is sticking up out of the top of the bottom log. Repeat that 3 times on each long side. (1 at each end and 1 in the middle) on the short sides, repeat 1 on each end of the log. 10 rebar stakes for each bed. You must be consistent with how far the rebar sits above the top of the bottom log. Measure the rebar and use masking tape to mark your drill bit 1/4-1/2 inch more than the length that the rebar is above the bottom log. CAREFULLY CHOOSE THE BEST SIDES OF THE TOP LOGS TO BE SEEN! Carefully measure and mark the top logs to match where the rebar needs to go into the top logs. Then drill the top logs from the bottom up. Then just set the top logs on top of the rebar and bottom logs. Since the rebar doesn’t go all the way through the top logs no one will see the rebar but the stability will be there for years and years to come. Also DON’T put the linseed oil on the inside surface of the beds, but do do extra burning with NO CLEANING on the inside of the beds. Study up on making Biochar. Make or buy some Biochar and spray the inside surfaces of your raised beds with the inoculating solution that you use for the homemade Biochar. Mix pieces of Biochar, compost and earth worms into your soil in the raised beds and your protégé garden will grow 10 times better than your wildest expectations. Ben of Holler Homestead did a good video on homemade Biochar. I hope this helps. Also if you take a cattle panel and arch it over the tomato beds, you can tie up your tomato vines and produce more tomatoes. You can even toss some clear greenhouse plastic over the arched cattle panels to get an earlier Spring start and a longer fall harvest time on your tomatoes. See videos by Jessica Sower-from Roots and Refuge and also Justin Rhodes grew tomatoes in a greenhouse on string. You will have so many tomatoes that Brooke will be able to make a year’s supply of gourmet tomato sauces.

Torching the wood is the oldest way to persevering wood. My great grand parents did this to the log cabin that still stands on our property. But we did our wood planters this way. We did each piece individually so that all exposed sides were sealed. Then we put them together. They are still up after 17 years and no rot. Dad did each piece of wood fencing for the surrounding fence of our property. I was two years old when he built the fencing. It's still standing 70 years later. Watching My Self Reliance build his cabin, he used this method. So did another family when they built the A-frame house. It's a dirty job, lol, but it works great. We enjoy your videos Jason and Mrs. Brooks are so interesting...watching a woman on a tractor is the best thing ever. GOD bless you all and stay warm.

Jason, Tiny Shiny Home is a terrific KZbinr that torch all their wood, then put Linseed oil, I think, on each board. I always learn a lot from them because they research everything and make sure to do all their projects the "correct" way. They are building a homestead in the Arizona dessert and have already finished some amazing projects. But, several months ago, they had a few wood torching videos. And explain the benefits very well. Plus, they have great music on each video! I have also seen a Japanese gentleman who lives alone in the forest, do some wood torching. He has made everything, even his furniture, lot of tools, etc. himself! I was glad to see you had heard about the wood burning and Linseed oil, that you put on for protection and endurance. Your garden beds will look beautiful even longer!

Remember to torch the wood on all sides to protect the wood. Between the beams is important to keep rot out. And remember to oil it afterwards to add a few years to the wood.

Interesting and beautiful technique! If it makes the wood durable enough to last 80 years, that's well worth the trouble!

“Shou sugi ban” is a extremely effective method of preserving wood by charring. This 18th century practice was used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned/torch until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil to create a resistant coating, plus it looks cool!

Remove the top layer of each box and use them for a bottom layer on the next 2 boxes. Then cut new posts on the 4 foot ends that will extend over the 8 foot posts. You will then be able to lock them all together by drilling and driving rebar in each corner and 3 on the 8 foot sides. Cut rebar 18 inches longer than height of box then drive rods all the way in to anchor to ground. This will keep the soil from pushing boxes apart. However it’s best to overlock all 4 corners on the rest of your boxes.

Not finished watching yet… but don’t give up!! After torching, brush all sides down of the torched wood with a good brush, then brush on linseed oil over all the wood.

I don't know what size it is but you need to make sure you can get the wheelbarrow between there because it's so much easier if you can get a wheelbarrow between those rows love your channel

I know it's too late to suggest but if you over lap the corners and you can run lags down through the top into the bottom timber. The holes in thee torch may just be corroded and need to be cleaned out. Orifice drills or torch cleaners from the gas supplier or welding shop will fix you right up. jack

Interlocking the top and bottom layers of the timber beds (like corners of a log cabin) will allow you to drive a pair of rebar spikes through both layers in each corner. This will lock the entire assembly together. It's unlikely that these will need to be strongly anchored due to its sheer mass once locked together.

Boiled oil won't be sticky. There is an old timers saying. Apply once a day for a month, once a month for a year then yearly. This is for all wooden handle tools. Boiled only.

My son lives in an old log house built from log/trees where a forest fire had gone through. The house was built in the late 1800’s! You can still see the burnt wood on the beams of the basement.

Jason, I'd drill a holes into ties and drive rebar into the ground to hold it together. If possible do a "brick stack" on the ties it will add to the stability.

About 16 years ago my late husband used this charring technique for Tudor style woodwork on the front of our house. As yet there is no sign of wood rot. He used new planks that needed no prior cleaning.

If you stack them alternating your corners, you can drive a piece of rebar through the corner down into the dirt to stabilize them.
