Though Disney showed how Tarzan’s parents’ ended up in the Jungle, they never really gave the audience much information about who they were, and it turns out those details were pretty important. You see, according to the original story that Tarzan was based on, the vine-swinging wildman actually had a deeper connection to the movie’s villain because of who Tarzan’s dad was. In fact, who exactly Tarzan’s father was, had led to huge implications for Clayton, and why exactly he and Tarzan were destined to feud.

that was never the story. in the book. tarzan is john clayton the 3rd lord of greystoke. his father being clayton the 2nd (who in the book is killed by kerchak not sabour(who is infact the name for all lionesses) and kala swaps her dead baby for tarzan. she dropped the baby after kechak beat her up. kerchak is the leader but not kala's mate either) 20 years later a group of treasure hunters were stranded by mutineers. in the group is jane porter (who is American in the book) archimedes q porter (jane's father) and William cecil clayton current lord of Greystoke. (tarzan's cousin) in the end of the 1st book jane promises to marry William Clayton and tarzan doesn't reveal who he really is. there's also some french naval officer who tarzan rescues who teaches him the ways of man. tarzan also really hates black people. because a native tribe member kills kala. but in the book lets just say black people aren't the best portrayed. ERB was a very racist man.

Some of the things referenced are in the books and films of Tarzan In one of the versions of Tarzan, Tarzan's parents were Lord Clayton and Lady Alice Greystoke and in Greystoke - the Legend of Tarzan, Alice died of jungle fever not long after giving birth to Tarzan and Clayton was attacked by and killed by Kerchack, but he had jungle fever too.

Having been given of a more broader scope about Tarzan's true name and his family connections would make an excellent serious plot twist into the story for Clayton being Tarzan's family relative as his own cousin. While for the story from the book and the Disney's animated film similar and yet different style to the beginning of Tarzan's origins where he was raised by apes and became as the Guardian of the Jungle, meets other like him and finally have found love in the end with Jane.

I’m still bitterly upset that Disney didn’t include this fact about Tarzan’s human connections with Clayton. That would’ve make understandably sense to the Burroughs novels. I wish they would’ve add that in Season 2 of *The Legend of Tarzan* series because it would’ve connect brilliantly to the classic novels. Though I’m still disappointed that they didn’t do that due to Disney’s contract expired.

I like that they were actually related, and I hope there's still a chance that they are if the disney iteration ever continues. Him finding out that after Clayton's demise would be a very interesting scenario

I would also point out that, far from the sadistic maniac was depicted as in the Disney film, William Clayton was a very honorable man. When he discovered that Tarzan was his cousin and the rightful Earl of Greystoke, his conscience tormented him, as he knew he should surrender his position. He also willingly brikenhis engagement to Jane because she loved Tarzan and ended up dying to save her despite her leaving him. The Tarzan books are not exactly great works of literature; there is a lot of coincidence driven plots, Tarzan gers amnesia multiple times, and he also meets several doppelgangers who try to pretend to be Tarzan. But they are really fun to read, and some of them ARE really good. I especially liked Tarzan Untamed, which covered Tarzan's actions during the First World War.

I rather enjoyed the first book. My library doesn't carry the others in the series, unfortunately. In more recent years someone reimagined the first book from Jane's point of view. It's more realistic, as modern books tend to be. But quite good.

Maybe it’s just because I like happy endings but I prefer the Disney version however if the had made Clayton a distant relative of Tarzan in the movie I don’t think it would’ve made the movie any weaker may have made Clayton’s death even more powerful and tragic

Agree. Yeah that would’ve been a great twist. It also would’ve explained Tarzan’s parents origins, where they came from, and where they were heading too. I recently been wondering if anyone back where they came from, ever looked for them. Come to think his father does look a bit like Clayton.

In the Disney version, yes. But in the original Burroughs novels, William Cecil Clayton is the only blood relative of Tarzan (aka John Clayton II, Viscount Greystoke).
