Director walked me out then I got a rejection email 2 weeks later. This stuff sucks and I’m tired of my time getting wasted.

@@Potentpotion Yes, UBI; the magical fix to everything. You introduce UBI (for instance: $12,000 annually like Yang was suggesting) and you'll run the US into hyperinflation within 5 years. We already saw what setting the Federal funds rate at 0.25% did to the markets. Massive stimulus and loans out the wazoo that drove prices thru the roof and inflated the markets to kingdom come. UBI is essentially a 0% loan that everybody will use to push the demand in markets up. Beef alone would probably double or triple in price within 18 months. Then you have to give CPI adjusted raises to the UBI each year. It's a horrible idea; the market always corrects itself.

I’m old enough to remember job hunting in the 80s, 90s, 2000s. Back then, there was a sense of ambition. You could buy a house with a non skilled job. Nowadays, every sector feels saturated with an oversupply of people. AI is going to eat our lunch. Cost of living has decoupled from earnings. I have enough money not to work for several years just by pure luck of “being born early”. I really feel for younger people.

As a younger person who had been making my living on unskilled work and getting jobs mostly based on good interviews and good communication, I’ll take some of that pity. If you have friends still in the workforce, tell them to get their HR to flip it and go after less skilled folks. We’ll learn whatever you want on probationary salary and prove our worth rather then expecting to be handed a job with a specific salary because we jumped through the hoops.

@@avernvrey7422 nowhere near as low as today compared to cost of living. I lived in the UK in the 1980s, 1990s to the mid 2000s. I know of many people who bought semi-detached or even detached property on unskilled wages (on one wage, to be clear) in both the 80s up to the late 90s. Absolutely impossible today. It was around 2001 to 2007 when house prices exploded, and even the 2008 crash didn't retrace back those gains. Perhaps I am wrong to include "2000s" in my initial comment, but it was more possible to buy property in the early 2000s than today, no doubt. Essentially, younger generations will never have it as easy as Gen X or boomers without some humongous (80% to 90%+) crash.

It feels like the Twilight Zone out here. After applying to several jobs online, I did something I haven't done in a while and went to a career fair to meet recruiters face-to-face in my area. It was utterly terrible. All of the recruiters except for two were either on their phones, literally joking with each other while fixing their hair in the mirror, talking to each other, or sitting around looking like The Guardians of the Work Destiny - just weird attitudes. They were completely uninterested in being there and it was beyond disappointing and demoralizing. Sadly, I felt it was a huge waste of time, not just for me and other hopeful job-seekers, but for the recruiters who obviously didn't want to be there.

Get a name if you can, and it's 2023... companies WILL reject you for the "wrong" politics. So e-stalk the name you get and check to see if there will be a clash, but I digress. One of the biggest mistakes is doing "interviews" with people who are only 1 month ahead of you in the job because the _actual_ hiring manager is who knows where.... or when the "hiring manager" is really just a glorified hiring _advisor_ who answers to somebody else. So after you get that sorted.... clarify all the common "bait and switches" that you see in job listings (and to come clean about anything you "fudged") at the START of the interview: "The listing said X, and I while I have X; I just want to clarify that this is recent/current/correct or are you really looking for 2X/Q/a dog person instead of another cat person so you have someone to talk to about your Corgi" (yep, it can be _that_ stupid sometimes... allegedly) OR "The listing said X, but I have 1.5x/T/a cat, is this going to be an issue or no?

Exactly this! It annoys me when I try to seek help from older people from my university and they say “why do you feel stuck?” Or “Don’t worry this won’t affect your portfolio” Yes I am stuck. I lost my live event design career due to Covid. Graduated into the middle of the pandemic. Took a job in a different state out of desperation in my field, and yet I’ve been stuck in an unhealthy sink or swim scenario trying to outlast the turnover rate (people only last a week because they are viewed as a number). With the job market only data collecting and not actually hiring. I will probably only have a chance at doing a job that qualifies for $40/hr but is being posted for $18-25 max….it is frustrating businesses are taking full advantage of trying to get cheap labor to make the most profit but still tell people they need to manage their money better. We are suffering and I’m stuck eating carrots I stretch through the month, one meal a day, to survive and make sure my bills are paid. This is insane!!

A few months ago, I made the decision to leave my job and take a calculated much-needed mental break. However, as I reenter the workforce, a sense of regret lingers. The journey to secure quality employment has proven to be more challenging than I anticipated, leaving me feeling uncertain about what lies ahead professionally. The job market has evolved during my hiatus, making it harder to find the right opportunities with my professional experience. Regret creeps in, questioning whether my choice to take a break was the right one. Yet, amidst these emotions, I realize that uncertainty is a natural part of growth and change. Navigating this uncertainty highlights the importance of taking risks. While it may feel uncomfortable, taking a chance on ourselves can lead to unforeseen opportunities and personal growth. Embracing uncertainty means embracing the possibility of failure, but it also opens doors to new paths and unexpected successes. It's essential to keep refining skills, exploring different avenues, and remaining open to new possibilities. By taking risks, we expand our horizons and discover the untapped potential within ourselves, leading us towards a brighter professional future. Having said that, good luck to everyone that is seeking employment now. I feel your pain and wish you all the best!

I now have a full remote company that has a 4-day work week and I also got a 16% pay increase at the same time. it's not a life of luxury by any means, but in this market it's just about as good as I could hope for thank you for your content and if anyone is reading this, there are companies that are sticking to these values. there's a hell of a lot of propaganda about RTO being inevitable. Big companies are leaning heavily into this direction, but there are plenty of mid to smaller size companies that remain remote. Yes because most of them are talent pipelines to get pool of candidates for future positions. A lot of those job postings are fake, they are just intended to get more resumes in for screening but nothing else. One way you can differentiate if its a real position or talent pipeline is by evaluating the application process, talent pipelines usually focus more on collecting basic information and rather than having a deadline or end day they have more open ended deadlines. You can also differentiate between the two by looking for the company LinkedIn profile and see if there are any supervisors or managers hiring for that role you’re applying; if the job is only advertised by a recruiter then most likely is a talent pipeline.

I start Monday (June 26), and feeling grateful. Gonna step into this and do my best to maintain it. I do wish all my fellow job seekers (especially the ones laid-off) the very best of luck and the best success.

I've seen multiple people sign on a job, turn in 2 weeks notice, and then wind up with their offer rescinded and their old job kicking them out the door. The rescinding company then complains they get bad glassdoor reviews by the slighted employee. Companies are essentially insuring that people will stop offering two weeks notice and instead just keep both jobs until they are satisfied the new job is stable. That's what vacation time will be used for if it's an onsite job.

SUCH PERFECT TIMING. I just got rejected by an automotive company that I applied for via staffing agency. Their reason? “We feel like you’re overqualified and would not be happy in the role, so we will keep searching.” Like… I’m sorry, what? So did I just apply and interview for the role (which I feel like would help expand my skill set in marketing, btw) for fun? Or did they conduct the interview for fun, already knowing that I’m somehow “overqualified”?! Like seriously, it wasn’t even in my Top 3 of jobs I interviewed for this month, but STILL. Not to mention, I’ve experienced many clients for staffing companies flake last minute for contracts that should be mine. It’s actually ridiculous.
@OanaTheMeerkat

Just trim your resume in such a way so that companies will not feel that you're overqualified. Basically, if they feel you're overqualified, they'll reject you because they think you just applied because you're desperate. And the moment you find a better job that fits your qualifications, you'll hop. Just keep in mind this --> make the company trust you (meaning, let them know you are docile, hard-working and no problem creator) (and then job hop if necessary, nobody needs to know your intends)

I would personally ignore whatever reason a company gives for not giving a job. They lie about positions and hiring all the time. Of course they would have known by just your resume and application if you were 'overqualified', so either that's not the real reason, or the person in charge of hiring was replace or re-focused or... It could be pretty much anything. It could be they are keeping the position listed, but since listing they have decided to wait and see if the finances work out. Typically as a company you really don't want it made public that you can no longer afford to hire people, especially if publicly-traded. It could be your interview performance. Companies prefer to ghost canidates rather than reject them - even by email, which can be completely automated - so once you do get an interview and it becomes difficult to ghost someone who is actively waiting on an answer then they might feel the need to get creative with it. It could be anything, really. Which makes it impossible to know if there's something you could or should be doing differently or if there was nothing that could be done.

Or have 2 trades or 2 jobs. And just save your ass off and cut a lot of your expensive bills like cable and cell phone to something cheaper like cricket. A lot of us young people have given up. We had to realize we have to have 2 or 3 jobs or roommates or both. So, no it's no picnic for the young generation either. Not going to lie, I'm feeling very discouraged right now about my career. I just spent the last two years applying for and fighting for my dream job with my favorite employer. I interned with them in college and love the work they do. I just finally finished going through their hiring process for the 3rd time (somewhat normal for them, unfortunately), passed their 2 interviews, written test, and more. I was put on their hiring list and after not hearing a word for over 2 months since i passed, I emailed today to check in. They said they dont always have job offers for people on their eligible hiring list and that I may not receive an offer at all. If I don't get a phone call or offer after so many rounds, they'll remove me from the list and i would have to reapply and start over completely with them. I don't understand how they can do this to people, especially when I'm a current employee of the company (I'm in a completely different field than my dream job and my qualifications, needs, and interests are better suited for the other job) and their hiring process can take literally a full year. I took my current job because they said they take care of their current employees and it would help me land the job I actually want. I get paid so little and feel like im wasting my degree on an underpaid job that only requires a HS diploma. I've never felt so undervalued until now. If I don't get this phone call before being removed, I don't think I can stay. I'm going to have to give up on my dream and find an employer that might at least give me a chance.
