Another irony in admiring Patrick is completely missing the point of the end of the movie. He's not free from society, he's trapped by it. He's stuck in a job he hates with people he hates more, and depending on if the murder spree was in his head or not, he's either having a mental breakdown and nobody notices or cares, or he can get away with killing like 20 people because he's too unremarkable to pin blame on.

What I find funny about the idea of Bateman being viewed as hyper-masculine, is that I remember throughout the 90s and early 2000s, the idea of a man putting large amounts of effort into things like personal hygiene/skin care routines, clothes, hairstyles, etc., was generally viewed as feminine and "metrosexual" behavior. To be clear, I'm not saying I agree with this, or that it can't often be a positive thing to put effort into your hygiene and appearance, I just find it funny how mercurial and contradictory our collective idea of "manliness" has been throughout history.

I think sigmas are ultimately the same way, the reason they're obsessed with independence from social pressure is because they care deeply about what others will think of them, and reject the notion of conforming to expectations altogether because they are afraid of trying and still falling short of those expectations. all that to say, i think sigma patrick is a valid interpretation because patrick tries to come off as aloof and untouchable while the audience knows from being inside his head that all he ever thinks about is other people's opinions

There are 2 reasons why people admire Patrick bateman. One is just surface level. They see how hes charming, well dressed, is rich and at the top of the social ladder, is funny and look up to him. They say “literally me” as a joke boasting about how good their life is. There is also a satirical aspect as anyone who knows about bateman knows hes a serial killer that has no redeeming qualities. The second reason is on a deeper level. In the movie people dont listen to eachother, are malicious and fake. Patrick feels like nothing he doesnt have any control or impact on the world, thus he resorts to murder to feel like he has some sort of power. They dont admire him specifically as a character, but instead the ideas and themes associated with him. They dont like patrick bateman, they like american psycho

"He's literally me" Thats the point. He's trying to fit in with everyone, to the point that he literally keeps getting mistaken for others. When he does try to be different, stand out, using his murders as a way to show everyone how he is not just some spineless, shallow, snobby businessman like them, no one cares, everyone just acts like he didn't do it or just ignore it, cuz they're no better, no different (hinted by how his lawyer jokingly says how he would've believed it if Bateman said one of his colleagues is the serial killer) If you're "literally him", you're just an empty husk who is nothing more than anyone else.

That's a great video man!. I am italian and I recently discovered this culture of sigma, alpha, redpill, black pill and all modern "movements". I'm doing my research watching tons of youtube videos from different sources to analize every position and I really suffer acknowledging the feelings of modern young men. I don't have this problem of "not fitting in" because I don't have this desire. Of course I'm not an outsider, I have a girlfriend a group of friends, an academic career and I feel blessed everyday for all of this. But really guys, don't try to fit into capitalism and masculinity idea, that is bullshit. Of course we need social validation, but try to get that from people that apprecciate you for who you are, and if this doesn't happen try to work on yourself developing hobbies that REALLY interest YOU and so on. It's ok to be feminine, it's ok to be masculine, I don't mind wearing nail polish sometimes but that doesn't make me less of a man. The only thing you should care about is studying and/or assuring you a job that doesn't make you miserable (and I don't mean only economically), some hobby or side interest and then working on your social skills. Oh, if you can, try to work out, like even twice a week is enough and do not eat shit; you don't need to be strict. If you want to get drunk, reduce that to once per week, don't eat chips and stuff every single day, eat more fruit and veggies, try to cook more often, drink water, it's really that simple. Oh and sleep at night, not during the day. I struggle to get a healthy sleep schedule and that affects my mental health a lot, so I try do sleep at least 8 hours (I fail 60% of the time but it's fact that you keep trying that counts). Beside these things guys, you shouldn't care about having tons of sex, being dominant over you peers or achieving a luxurious lifestyle; those are evanescent things, they don't really matter unless you wanna end up like Bateman: full of hatred. Love yourself and leave alone this bullshit of blackpill and stuff like that. Plus, if you're an incel, remember that getting laid it's not a natural right; women (or in general other people) don't owe you shit. Try to work on yourself and leave away all this hate. If someone had been mean to you, then he/she's a dickhead, don't worry about these people, but please don't generalize and don't think that if just a single woman treated you like shit (and if she refused you doesn't mean she treated you bad automatically) then all of them is going to; that's delusional and uselessly harmful. Peace

Great video that sums up the themes of American Psycho really well. One thing I can't just agree with is that Patrick Bateman is the ultimate victim. He sure is a victim as he's a man inserted into the world he cannot live sanely in, but at the same time - a rich kid of a rich dad who makes lifes of the less fortunate around him miserable because he needs someone to take out his anger for not being even higher up the ladder on. He's a pitiful anti-hero, the main character of a cautionary tale if you will. He's a product and a blunder of the system at the same time, but it only explains his actions, not justifies them, thus making him an intermediary victim but also the perpetrator
@michawrzosek54175 ай бұрын
It's more apparent in the novel. He's the type of young prick who in his teens raped a woman with a toilet brush on his upper-class skiing holidays in Norway and has neither regretted it nor faced the consequences. “He’s literally me” He doesn’t even exist. There is no Patrick Bateman. He is not there.
One thing I find particularly concerning is the age of the people relating to him. I feel like their concerns are the same we used to have during a "midlife crisis" : we did everything we were told to, but still feel empty, without goal or meaning. It's like we managed to have a few decades of chill and casual life before realising the pointlessness of it all and the absurdity of shutting yourself up for your boss/compagnie. But now we get midlife crisis at the start because we have zero solutions from the start, we are already broken from out first jobs. And we need to find our own meaning outside of the capitalistic framework way sooner.

You, good sir, do not "get" Patrick Bateman at all. His personality is not that of a Psychopath. The people around him, his co-workers and social circle are psychopaths. Patrick is just trying to fit in. He wants to out-psychopath the psychopaths. Mergers & Acquisitions (or Aquisitions) is among the most cold-blooded positions one can hold on Wall Street, requiring, almost by definition, psychopathic behavior. Patrick's problem is pure Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He is insecure, he feels empty, his colleges sense this and consider him a dork. NPDs are driven to present as superior and quickly become rage filled and malevolent when treated otherwise. NPDs can become quite dangerous. Probably more so than the average psychopath. The psychopath sees others as a means to an end and will quickly discard you and move on when it doesn't work out. The Narc's goal is to destroy your very soul out of their malevolent envy. I was once married to a NPD. Do not underestimate them. They will fuck up your world.
@jooname3 ай бұрын
NPD is actually not a form of psychopathy (and psychopathy is not an actual DSMV diagnosis or official disorder). What people usually mean when they say psychopath or sociopath are wrapped up into "anti-social personality disorder". ASPD does share a spot in cluster B disorders with NPD however, and NPD is often co-morbid with borderline and ASPD, so it's not like you are totally wrong about them (often) being linked. Also I fully agree about NPD being the most dangerous of ALL psychiatric disorders. Someone with ASPD might be rude, loud or socially abrasive but not cruel. Someone with NPD will ruin your life with slow and careful manipulation just because they want to feel powerful. I do agree Bateman has NPD and ASPD. He's the "full package" malignant narcissist.

No you're right. Patrick Bateman is literally me instead.

Extremely ironic, considering that Patrick Bateman is a beta in his movie. Dude he can barely get reservations to Dorsia. He constantly gets mistaken for someone else constantly.

I for one just gave up on society, realized most people are dumb and delusional (some of which is not of their own doing but that of media and those who raised them) and that I should trust my instincts and intuition and not others's confirmative ideas, but my own. I speak without thinking about others' feelings. I do what I want as long as it doesn't impose other's will. I also grew a beard. My girlfriend says I am the most masculine man she has ever met. All of this comes from giving yourself quiet, alone time and meditation and thought. Most people either don't do this or are too distracted by drugs, alcohol, media, or sex to even think for themselves.

Nothing brings me more joy as a woman then seeing ‘men’ be in love and obsessed with Patrick. The edits are exactly like the ones I used to see of One Direction in 2014. They’re just fan girlies like the rest of us and no better. But the best part is that Patrick in actuality represents not only toxic masculinity (which is a bad thing, something his idols keep forgetting) and of why we need to disband the patriarchy because he doesn’t benefit from it. I love American Psycho because it’s a feminist film, it’s a socialist film. Patrick like Thomas Shelby (another of their heroes) ends up miserable, they’re cautionary tales. But that isn’t my favourite part, it’s that the actors who play them, and the people who wrote the characters, hate those type of toxic men and speak against the negative values of patriarchy. It’s sad the these wonderful films, tv series, characters etc are co opted by hateful men who miss the point of it. It goes straight over their heads and only like the media because it has violence, violence against women, and s3x. Deep down they’re in love with these men and they just don’t know it.

It's not feminist nor socialist. You should reevaluate your rtrd opinion.
