Started lpn school at 39 and graduated at 40. Here I am at 41, working my first job that I was always told I wasn’t smart enough (my fourth grade teacher told me I wasn’t smart enough to do the spelling bee and that just robbed me of my self worth). I’m going back to school next fall to continue on and become a RN. I went down the wrong path in my twenty’s. God had a plan for me, and here I am doing a job I never thought I would do.

English is my second language; I could not score high enough on the English and reading part of the exam. Two years later, I thought I was over it, but I still have that lingering desire to pursue a Nursing career. I have been a nail tech for over 30 years, and many of my clients are aging. I've always wanted to get into nursing but was very intimidated and felt like I stood no chance competing for a spot into the ADN program at my local community college. I then applied for Nuclear Medicine Technology and was accepted for one of the 7 spots! My dad then fell ill and passed away during my first semester and I was mourning and couldn't get through my program, so I withdrew. That was in 2019. Fast forward to 2022, my husband got ill and nearly died. I took care of him for months. When he got better, we started a business together, but nursing never left my mind. My passion for nursing became much more stronger.... almost like an itch. The more time I spent being in the hospital, the more I wanted to become a nurse. So here I am at the age of 35... waiting to start my BSN program in May of 2023. It's my calling!

There was no way I could have gone into nursing when I was in my 20s. I had no interest in nursing (at that time), could not commit to that kind of job. At age 35 (had some college credits from a community college I went to years ago), 2020 happened and I lost my old job. I had 2 choices, look for a new job or go back to college. I got on unemployment and spent the first year taking care of my nursing pre-reqs. It was a grind at first. Science classes are tough and there were times I thought about dropping out. However, while taking my Microbiology class, it clicked. I never liked science classes, I thought they were a chore. Then I figured out, learning is not memorization, it is more like you are adapting. No one is born a nurse, or doctor or any other job. You first need to learn it, master it. College tests your ability to follow instructions, adapt, process new information. I did not have that level of maturity in my 20s.

Its been 35 years since I graduated college and I spent most of my career in my own business, unrelated to health fields. Now, I'm doing prerequisites to enter a nursing program. I will be 63, by the time I have my BSN, but as long as I'm strong and healthy, I am almost convinced it doesn't matter. Im 46 was in special ed throughout school, I dropped out of jr college 20 years ago because my grades were so bad. I had a 0.8 gpa and I have never worked a day in my life, seriously, not one. My IQ is 86. What are the odds I would succeed?

Nursing is a very challenging program and you need a strong background in science in order to be successful. My suggestion would be to start with college-level science courses and see how it goes!

Hi Anthony, start by researching the schools you are interested in. They will have all the details for what is required on their websites. Best of luck to you!

We don't say "older student" anymore. It's now known as "non-trad student" aka non-traditional. :)

I'm with little kids. Some are very spoiled and task oriented. I have worked my whole life I am an LVN and married to a fire captain. Thor is very little support for us they assume we are fine while the little kids get all the nice comments and support. I definitely shine in clinical. But this has been disappointing

I'm sorry you're experiencing this. Is it possible the younger students are getting more support is because they need it, whereas you are performing at a higher level? Just something to think about. 💕 Regardless, I am proud of you!!!! I hope your next clinical rotation is a better experience...keep on believing in yourself :-)

A very thankless career. A career that will give you PTSD. Wreck your back and spirit. Otherwise a "great job."
