The tip on the Eric Johnson lick to use your second finger backed up with the third is gold. These are the easily overlooked little tricks that can really unlock your speed, or just make certain licks much easier. This is why I watch videos that may seem elementary at first, yet you never know what very useful things you can pick up. Great lesson!!

Dudes playing the guitar well are common nowadays. However, dudes not only playing well but TEACHING also well, are rare. You are one of those rare dudes, keep up the excellent work.

Absolutely correct, expensive teachers, tab and scale books. I've learned more the last 6 months from videos like these than I did 1988-1990! Thank God I picked the guitar back up. I'm in❤ all over again with it. Just old as shit now.😅

On the first two licks, I naturally want to alternate up and down picking on each lick. is that a problem instead of going all downward picking?
@mrp4103 ай бұрын
same here. It probably comes down to the speed you want.. Going up and down is less efficient perhaps than straight down and milliseconds probably make a difference?

I wish KZbin was around in the early 70s. Guitar Players now have it made. I couldn’t afford lessons because I was too young to Work. So I had to Play a Record over and over again to learn the Song and the Lead Parts. I learned all the Chords mostly by Books, and also by Ear. I then learned how to read Tablature. I eventually got to the point where I could play almost all of Van Halen’s Songs, and moved on to learning Satriani Songs, mostly by Tablature. But back then we are talking about Hours and Hours of Practice, and really learning to recognize Patterns by Ear. Now you just click on KZbin and get excellent Free Lessons. I really liked the Eric Johnson Style Lick you were Teaching. Great Video and a Great Teacher. I plan on watching all your Videos. You’re never too old to learn some new Tricks. Subscribed.😁👍👍❤️

I had lessons in Jr High and it was worthless. They didn't even touch on basic essentials such as pick thickness, holding pick correctly, anchoring hand, angle of attack, pointing out I would go nowhere with the cheap JC Penny guitar with an action way off and strings an inch above fretboard (well close to it). I did learn to play somewhat reading music but have forgotten most of that and it's unnecessary.
@walksuponwater72614 ай бұрын
There are lots of excellent guitarists that offer to show you the way to play beautifully. But in reality they just are taking to themselves and other elites in guitar playing. Their demonstrations are at lightning speed and nothing is actually learned, it is more of a show off of their skills. Your little video is packed with learning the speed tips and encouragement that us intermediates need to improve quickly. Funny I saw a video of Kiss doing a lead bit and it was just the sequencing pentatonic scale you just showed us! You demystify the guitar for us Eddie thanks man and long may you run!

Great lesson. The section on the Eric Johnson lick - I noticed that Joe Bonamassa picks this differently and he uses fewer pullofffs. You can tell this especially when he plays with no effects and with a small amp. He takes this concept to another level.
@joemusicman647 ай бұрын
I noticed during that lick you start at about 11:10 that you play all down strokes when you play slow then you seem to do up/down/up, repeating when you speed up. Is that what I'm seeing? I've tried doing all down, then doing all alternate picking, and doing it your way (up/down/up). I'm trying to figure out what's the best habit to get into for the picking hand. Is it what feels best/most natural? Doing all alternate picking is complicated at first but seems the fastest when you get the hang of it (down/up/down, up/down/up). Let me know your thoughts. I ask this from a student perspective because these riffs are new to me.

You can generally get away with playing minor pentatonic over most chord progressions, especially in rock and blues. This lesson is focused on speed building, but we have plenty of other lessons on the channel that’ll help with playing over chord changes!
@mo-em1ke8 ай бұрын
Put a backing track on and make up random combinations of notes within the scale and try finish random strings of notes with a note that's in the chord that's backing you. Backing tracks will help you alot even when just running the scale over them
