The timing of triggering honorable restorition determines who you get as the emperor. Before 1852 you get Ninko(仁孝) restoration, who is a Landowner, 1852-1878: Komei(孝明) who is a militarist; 1879-1912: Meiji(明治) - Industrialist; 1912-1928: Taisho(大正), also an industrialist, and after 1928 you get Showa(昭和), a militarist.

You should build the first 15 construction sectors in tohoku. You have plenty of woord/Iron and pops to make them cheap
@cheeseofglass
@cheeseofglass 10 ай бұрын
You should first spread them out. 15 wood-framed cons require 1,125 wood input, which is far more than any one state can produce and is a big deal when you have 60% MAPI. There's also about a 5:8 cotton plantation:con ratio. Tohoku is good for iron-framed, but you shouldn't start out with those. Wood-frames are more efficient until T2 PMs, at least. You can build about 4 iron-framed in Tohoku with its base infrastructure, which outputs 20 construction points and requires ~8400 construction investment. You can get 20 construction points from wood frames in any province(s) with ~7200 construction investment. Tl;dr start by building ~5-9 wood cons in every state (that has pops/produces wood). Once you get T2 production techs you can focus on building up Tohoku
@cheeseofglass
@cheeseofglass 10 ай бұрын
It's more efficient to build wooden sectors in every province. 15 sectors inputs over 1000 wood which is more than you can produce in one state.

KZbin, stop censoring me, omg.
@cheeseofglass
@cheeseofglass 10 ай бұрын
Tohoku can't build enough lumber mills to feed 15 wooden construction sectors so it's better to spread them out at the start. Iron sectors aren't better until Tier 2 PMs. (I had a much more detailed reply but KZbin shadow-censored it for some inexplicable reason.)

When I first played Japan, I managed to become the best nation in the world without ever opening my economy and also maintaining an absolute monarchy with no voting. I did it not because I like a challenge, but because I didn't know how to open my economy nor get voting rights. In the end I got colonies all over the place, conquered nearly everything around the Pacific, and got infamy in the thousands. Even though my infamy was high, no nation can stand against my army and since I had to be self reliant it is not like I needed to trade with anyone. Also, the other nations kept collapsing since I managed to at least get immigration working. So many kept flooding into my empire that I couldn't keep up with making new places for them to work, and other nations could not man their armies nor workplaces. My capital alone had about 100 million living there in the 1890s, and nearly the entire island of Japan looked completely urbanized.

The hardest part of Japan for me is the closed market. I want tools to increase the market output but tools also need iron which conflicts with the more efficient iron framed buildings so you’re always running a deficit unless you build a shit load of iron mines.

As you stated - Japan teaches you to make closed economy. But here is the penny for thoughts - whenever i was playing nations like germany or france, I was highly focusing on exports - making other nations dependable on your goods. Not so big internal market, but huge worldwide connection, getting you on money -> construction rollercoaster. Other nations which are dependable of your economy won't make moves against you, making de facto puppets from great powers as Ming and Russia. (Russia went on detour once, closed market, their prices skyrocketed and SoL dropped so significantly that they immidiately opened their market)

I don't know if they changed the weights for getting a specific IG leader ideology, but I believe that rerroling for a jingoist is still a better strat, you get professional army and any form of colonization. That gives you enough approval in the landowners to be able to get an early homesteading (if you are lucky enough to get that movement, 60% is massive!) Also, to get the "open market" as a wargoal, you should try to attack a British subject, while Britain has the "economic imperialism" focus (again, that's how I remember it worked before the current patch)
@Brimfarm
@Brimfarm 10 ай бұрын

"It's because I want to have direct control over the investment pool [...] at that pointy I will have laissez-faire, and it screws me over [...]" I understand that the script for the AI-queue isn't smart ... but it's the point of laissez-faire to have less control as a government or at least give it up. That's like wanting Command Economy, but capitalist should be happy to throw their money at it. It's also throwing benefit and drawback under the bus.

My best play as Japan was when I triggered a very early civilwar (because I still have no idea how to actually play) and Britain offered to help if I became their subject. I accepted and was in the British market by around 1840. Ended up using France and Germany with superior Navy to prevent British invasion to break free by around 1890. Do you guys think it's worth taking the tribute hit for the market access or was that just a bad deal from the start?

I suggest you turn on autonomous investment, since without it the AI builds waaaaaay less because it doesn't take into account the money it has in it's investment pool when deciding to start building. Try switching to a big country with mostly agrarian economy like East India Company, Russia or China and you will probably see hundreds of millions in their investment pool while they use a fraction of their construction capacity. By 1900 the world can end up being a billion GDP poorer than it should be because of it. Paradox probably doesn't test much on the controlled investment mode and that's why it's so broken atm. It's really sad but right now we have to choose between having full control of our production, in a game that focuses on the economy VS having semi-competent AI enemies.
