When I saw this scene, I realized immediately that the professional examining him was a real professional. This is what we do. We examine our patients and separate ourselves from the reality of the situation to make sure we don't MISS any important clinical finding. This is what we are trained to do. The drama of an emergency is not an excuse to miss anything. We can reassure the patient at the same time that we carefully examine the patient. it's a matter of fulfilling your duty. Best part is that this is pure acting from Tom Hanks. Corpsman Albert, who was the medic in this scene, was very star struck when shooting this scene so Tom Hanks joked around with her and told her to just relax and treat him like she would any other patient. Most other actors would just stay deeply into character but the fact he could break character and still could believably show a man breaking down from trauma once the cameras was rolling showed how amazing off an actor Tom Hanks is.

The woman asking him questions did a fantastic job as well. While watching this with my husband he asked why she seemed so nonchalant. I told him she has to be that way or she can’t get her job done. I know it’s not the same, but I suffered from compassion fatigue from getting too emotionally involved and invested in the deaths and the families of those that died at the funeral home I worked at. I had to keep my distance emotionally. It’s like reading a script eventually.

Forrest Gump might be his most famous movie. But Captain Phillips is the absolute best performance of Hank's career. I was in Highschool when this happened, and the real Captain Phillips was not very public about his personal reaction to everything, he held his emotions in as most people do in traumatic experiences. But Hanks pulled off the most realistic portayal I have ever seen of someone who is completely mentally broken by their experience. From his distance and dead eyes shifting into subtle collection of his surroundings, part of him doesnt really believe its over, and another part doesnt know how to react, he's overwhelmed, and it broke him. No one could have given a better performance.

This was so real, I did a little digging. From IMDB: The hospital corpsman in the infirmary scene was a real Navy Corpsman (Danielle Albert). The director told her to treat Tom Hanks like it was a "regular military exercise". The sequence was unscripted and improvised.
