I remember how in High School, I was usually studying and doing homework while listening to classical music. Bach was a favorite for me, along with Schubert and Tchaikovsky. Pacing back and forth, looking through a book or a paper with cello suite no. 6 in d major playing, questions of the study in my head mixing with worries of relationships, friends, my future, and how to hide the more questionable tabs on my computer... Ahh, good memories. Life had purpose back then. Then 2020/21 hit and the world has all gone down into the gutter, now hasn't it?

I'm in my later 50s, and was inspired to study physics in college and graduate school in the 80s in part by educational shows like Carl Sagan's COSMOS. The background score of COSMOS used a variety of great music, including a lot of baroque classical such as Bach and Vivaldi. In my mind a permanent association was established between the contrapuntal harmonies of the baroque and contemplating the motions of the planets and classical Newtonian mechanics, the "music of the spheres". I often listened to the COSMOS soundtrack and classical concertos when studying and working classical mechanics and electrodynamics problem sets in my dorm room. To me, music like this will always embody the beautiful, deep mathematics of nature. Thanks for this!
