Alex has complex physical and mental health needs, and cannot walk unaided. But due to a severe lack of accessible housing in the area, Alex has to live in a first-floor flat. Alex’s life has been drastically affected by a series of Tory cuts, reforms and changes to disability benefits and a growing crisis in social care and housing. This is the story of people living and working with disabilities in modern Britain.

I feel so bad for her. :( I've been disabled since birth and I can say that, sadly, this is the kind of garbage those of us who are disabled live with every day. No one cares. No one gives money and we are expected to live on little SSI or SSDI. The only way things will change is if society actually cares enough about those of us who are disabled to give us enough money to live better lives. Those of us who get $1,000 a month are lucky but that's not even enough to pay for an apartment. There are many of us who are disabled who DO in fact still need help. It's the same in the US and the UK. Everyone is different. The system is BROKEN.

They not only pay you only about $1000 a month in disability benefits they then bring the government in the US tells you how much money you can make if you make a penny over some small amount, poverty level under 15 grand you lose all your benefits, but being disabled, cost way more money than not being disabledmy car cost $125,000 when it needs to be replaced and it’s a pick up truck

It's not like disabled people contribute more than they consume. Why should the public have to foot the bill for someone who will have no return on investment? I'd rather have more money in my pocket.

This video speaks volumes. Ableism seems like the biggest plague on society to me. I have a progressive disability and while I can still manage a lot of physical tasks, things are getting harder. I wish I could work. I also wish I felt more like part of society. Alex's laboured breathing while descending the stairs in this video made me want to cry and scream in frustration. Alex is a remarkable survivor. They do this every day and there are multitudes of others out there living like this. I'm in Ontario Canada, and I can't say it seems much better here. It is darn near impossible for anyone to find accessible housing. I had it at one point and I had to give it up. I currently live in a place that requires more adaptations for my needs... anyway, there seems to be no way to get that done. At least my building has an elevator. I feel really fortunate for that. People with disabilities need way more support. Able people and government and other institutions need to stop treating us like sub-humans. Thank you for this video.

Individuals that are physically disabled and unable to work suffer all around the world. If you do not have family able to help physically and with monetary resources...the "slaughter" is slow and inhumane. I am convinced of the existence of an elite group of worldwide powers that control the economy. They only have use for laborers, and those that serve their interests.

This is appalling and wrong. I remember when I was a child, I crawled on the floor for 15 years because I didn’t have an accessible house then in 2005, I moved into an accessible flat. I now have a university degree, I learnt to drive a car and have gone and got myself a job working in a government department. For 15 years, I crawled on the floor like a dog so this brings back c painful memories for me, it’s shocking that people are still having to live like this in 2021, and is a gross breach of the equality act 2010. Does anybody know what happened to this woman did she eventually get an accessible property or at least a property with decent adaptions in the form of a stairlift or even a ground floor flat???

And her mentioning being hurt on the stairs...This is truly, truly heartbreaking, the inner strength this lovely woman has motivates me to continue my life with my disabilities, Please God bless this woman and make her life easier, please grant her a wheelchair and a wheelchair-friendly apartment, she doesn't deserve to have to struggle even more than she already is... sending lots of positivity and hope and light to her and all of those who go through this..

They must never again be allowed to take over Labour! I have a chronic illness and disabilities. It's VERY personal. JC4PM

Problem is that being on the right is thought of as being the centre ground now that Corbyn is talking about a return of mass re-nationalisation, keeping the NHS out of the FTSE, plus the return of mass council house building if he becomes prime minister like a proper labour prime minister he gets constantly lambasted with a constant barage of smears by the gutter press as him being an extreme loony left wing soviet style communist even though the UK was in no way communist when the UK had same type of mass nationalisation under previous labour governments like Corbyn intends if elected. Those who blamed the high inflation and interest rates in the 1970's entirely on labours policies of nationalised industries and council house building being in full swing think they know it all when they don't. Inflation was higher when Heath left office than when Callaghan left office, but the right will never tell you that.

Thank you for this. Very brave of Alex to allow them self to be filmed whilst being so utterly vulnerable, and it's just so utterly moving seeing the very embodiment of the digusting effects of the government's shrinking of the state. I might finally have something I can show those close to me who make snide remarks about my politics and believe without question in the horrible hate-rags that are our "free press" to make them understand the impact of the nonsense they willingly embrace. I've never been political, I've always just been a person who has fundamentally wanted people to be decent to each other. Everything has changed thanks to my belief in the Britain I thought I grew up in utterly vanishing over the last decade or more, where the weak and vulnerable are demonised as an excuse for why ordinary people are themselves suffering - in reality of course it's never been true and no caring person could ever believe it and our politics and government are utterly sick. I'd give away every damned penny I have and every luxury if I knew it could help people like Alex to live a life with some dignity and respect. I deserve nothing more and nothing less than Alex - and every money grabbing arsehole that can't see that saddens me deeply.

It can be heartbreaking, but in time you heal and become a stronger person for it. Thanks for your words of support. It can be lonely stuck in hospital, so when I say it means a lot it really does. @@duncansherman-hailcaesar3513 A lot of individuals care, but the government doesn’t, people who work in health and social care don’t. You wouldn’t believe how many times carers uses to say to me they could get paid more for stacking shelves in a supermarket! There was just absolutely no awareness of how that would make the person they are caring for feel. There are some great carers you have empathy for, sadly they seem few and far between. Too many people are pushed into the job by job centres as well so they don’t really want to be doing the job. You can’t have empathy though when they come out with things like what I said about getting paid more for working in a shop in the middle of changing you. I don’t think a lot of carers appreciate disabled people have feelings and will be hurt by comments like that and other various throwaway comment they have to deal with about their bodies as such, which in any other environment should be classed as some kind of bullying or harassment. If it is reported m it gets batted away as with you must have misunderstood or maybe they were having a bad day. Yet if you say anything negative at all , he’ll comes down on you and you get threatening letters, absolutely no understanding or acknowledgment about how any of your conditions could have impacted on something you said may have been misconstrued or resulted in you for one moment being short tempered , even if you apologised. Particularly for someone, say who has neuro issues or is diabetic. Yet when they do it , no apology. Just constant double standards. I’ve now insisted every conversation I have is by email so there can be no ‘misunderstanding’ and they still email and say can you ring to discuss further! I’m like erm …. No, I prefer email. They keep telling me I can’t record conversations in the home without their permission which they don’t want to give! What a surprise, but just discovered as it is my home, legally I can. So I want to look at how we can do that now. It is awful that these steps have to be taken Though against people who should be among the most trusted in society. We just want to be treated as humans beings too and recognised that we also have worth. During the pandemic it was publicly acknowledged that if disabled people had care then if they got seriously Unwell they wouldn’t be offered intensive care or treatment because their life wasn’t worth as much as someone who was more healthy. Doesn’t matter that for all the doctor knew that disabled person might have had a much more fulling life than the lazy person healthy who just sat on their sofa all day watch tv. It is dangerous territory when they start to make those kind of choices. We have a famous tv celeb who’s husband got sick and spent a year in itu, he is now as or more disabled than some of those people that the doctors are saying they wouldn’t have saved during the pandemic which I find slightly ironic. He has returned to hospital several times because of complications. Also the average person would not have been kept alive in itu that long either which begs the question if you are middle class and have fame and money , are the rules different for you than for joe blogs when it comes to health care?

From my own blog: This was very hard to watch. Yet I was not surprised. Issues such as this also happen in Australia. When Government cuts funding to welfare services, disability services and yet has a budget for military expenditure over the social and medical needs of its citizens, you have a problem in the system. Of course government spokespeople and spinmasters will blame it on the foreigners or terrorists, but what it comes down to is the priorities of the governments of our societies do not have their priorities right. You don't sell off social housing to investors, you build more. You build disability accessable homes for those that need it, not put them on waiting lists and leave them to fend for themselves. If I sound like a radical socialist, so be it. I believe that the taxes I pay should go into schemes that help people not kill people.

Petar I've been in a similar situation myself here in Australia a few years back, but let me tell you the direction both countries are currently going couldn't be more opposite! The NDIS has some major teething issues, but when you look at the size of the scheme & extent of changes, this is to be expected. I'm still transitioning, so can't comment for sure, but so far I feel VERY positive about it! If nothing else, a woman like this would automatically get a new additional payment of about $60 per fortnight paid into her bank account for "transport" for her to use however she liked, just to help her get out socially. If she was working 8 hours or more a week, then it's over $100 for transport. That is in addition to a funding package to allow carer supported transport for doctor's appointments, social activities, work etc (so she'd have funding for a carer of her choice come to her home & assist her down the stairs & drive her where she needed to go & then assist her back up again). continents products and their delivery are also fully covered under the NDIS, including things like gloves as well as the pullups etc. Housing could still use some work, but it's no-where near as bad for someone with this level of disability as it is for an average person. There's a significant number of public housing properties that are designated as being for people in wheelchairs, that are then leased to non-wheelchair people if no-one in a wheelchair needs the property at the time, but wheelchair users & other severe disabilities do get priority Australia has got it's priorities right on this stuff & we are going to see the payout long term! the new system is focused on early intervention & linking people into the community, education & workforce, therefore preventing deterioration that costs more long term & instead integrating people into regular life in a way that will result in a lot less people on disability pensions & needing extensive care. About the only negative I've seen in this regard when actually applied is they've funded me for a human cleaner instead of a robot vacuum cleaner (non-transferable). I felt a robot vacuum would be cheaper in the long term & that I can do all the cleaning except the floor, but I guess they either want more support there or it doesn't fit with how the system works or whatever, but overall the system is designed to spend money now to improve quality of life & reduce costs long term. I REALLY feel for people with a disability in the UK right now! It's shocking some of the crap they're being put through & as Australia is showing, it doesn't have to be like that!

This is bad, but it happens in the US too, and the current administration is trying to cut more funding for US help for people with disabilities. (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) -- Alex needs not only accessible housing and a wheelchair, but other adaptive/assistive aids, help with getting food and other necessities, and -- a roommate, whether an assistant or simply some other real live person who is there to help if/when Alex needs it, or simply needs someone to talk to, to be around, a friend.Politicians and the general population have NO idea what the needs are for the typical impaired person or anyone with a long-term condition, because they've never been around anyone long enough to know. If the US Congress or the UK Parliament had to live for one month the way most handicapped people or poor people do, I'm sure they'd be begging for change. It's cruel and wrong, in countries that are well off enough, we should never have anyone living like this, or without food or adequate housing or a job...or simple social contact, support, friends. The UK and US so outstanding in other ways. This needs to change. Or someday, it will come back to bite us all. How we treat others, especially those who cannot help themselves, is a reflection on how truly (un)civilized we are.

Ghleehanna Leslie I made it to a protest against Trump earlier in the year. It's the biggest thing I've done all year, and it was totally exhausting. A man approached me and started to grill me about my atheism, telling me that "being in a wheelchair keeps you from sinning". These days I'm mostly bedbound, and without support from my partner and home carers coming in, I'd have died years ago.

I've got all this money... so I can take care of them... but if you're poor... then you're screwed...
