The idea that the Goddess Hylia unintentionally learning what it means to be human, and feeling guilty for what she had to do, just fills me to the core. She created a puppet to save the world and herself, and accidentally created a life she never knew she wanted or even, would love. Hylia became Zelda. And when she needed to become Hylia again, she hesitated.

I think there's a very non-subtle indication of this in the game itself when Zelda apologises for having used Link in her grand plan, knowing he would gladly be the martyr she needed and taking advantage of his feelings for her, both as a friend and as a lover.

Damn, that's so cool! Man, I really have to dive into more Zelda lore. It's like switching from an RTS game to an RPG. In an RTS, you see resources and assets. You manage them, seeking advantages and try to maintain the system. You see the whole but not the individual. In an RPG, you get to know people. Their lives, their hopes and struggles. You see each and every one as vital and irreplaceable. But what if, you do something in the RTS that would benefit the whole in the long term but with a price. You measure the risk, and deem it a good trade for the greater good. Then, you get your boots on the ground, and suddenly no risk is too small. Any sacrifice is too great. And you just can't.. On another note, Maze Runner has a similar concept(spoilers). Thomas, the MC, is thrown into a death trap maze with no memories where he has to fight to survive against the denizens of the maze alongside others who are trapped. He thinks that it is cruel. And the shadowy organisation, WCKD that put them there are psychopaths. Many deaths and sacrifices later, they escape and he discovers that he _helped_ design the maze. Before losing his memory he worked for WCKD and thought it was worth it to test for a cure for a virus ravaging humanity.

What I really like with this, is that, unlike other similar interpretation I saw, it doesn't show Hylia has a monstrous mastermind behind Link's suffering. It's just a simple fact that, she made herself human to save humanity, and by becoming so, she grasped the full experience of what being human means, and she wasn't truly ready to become a goddess again after that.
@darkyami12141
@darkyami12141 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, you know I never really was able to realize that little aspect of it, but it is true. The way how I always saw it is that Hylia herself was very indifferent about the hero, only seeing him as a means to end the war against Demise. But after she becomes a hylian/human herself it changes everything. As Hylia she just saw her people as a queen/goddess would, as subjects that she would protect, there was no bond or interpersonal relationship (except for maybe the first hero) she had with any of them. But the moment she becomes Zelda, she suddenly had a family, friends and acquaintances that she got to know and love. It became different, so when she started to remember and see more of her past life it's clear she didn't want to, but knew she had to. Despite her sworn duty as Hylia, Zelda on the other hand didn't want it
@llRooll
@llRooll Жыл бұрын
@@darkyami12141what makes it even more impactful for me is that Link WAS her first interpersonal relationship. Most likely she saw the other tribes as fellow warriors, but Skyward Sword's Link was the FIRST hero, the one she truly interacted with since even in the introduction scene, we see multiple tribes standing besides her but none of them show any kind of "preferential treatment" or anything.

There was a comic in Hyrule Historia detailing that, adding even another detail. In a nutshell, Zelda is made by Hylia's soul and Link by the soul of the Hero of Skyloft, a warrior similar to Link but darker and less hopeful, as he was betrayed and reviled by humanity all the time for his battle prowess And here goes the part tying with this beautiful comic: Hylia admits she and the other goddess made the Hero the way he was At first subtly, when the Hero was jailed and trapped because the other Hylians were jealous of him, she orders him to be freed, shows him the Goddess Sword, breaks it and orders him to reforge it in the Master Sword as "Humans can wield something godly only when it's broken beyond all repair and reforged by human hands" Then the Hero does something typical of Link: he goes with the Master Sword to keep Demise and his army at a bay until every single human is safe, and delirious because of his wound and his life slipping away, begs to know if the few people showing him kindness are now safe and wishes to see it with his eyes Hylia comes to him and confesses tearfully that she herself masterminded his suffering, because as the Master Sword had to be broken to be reforged, the Hero's soul itself had to be shattered beyond all repair to steel the Hero enough to fight. She however starts crying and regretting that, telling him that if they had another life she'll guide him with love and never with pain. After that, the Hero does and Hylia enacts her blessing: Hylia will be reborn, over and over, to watch over Hyrule and Skyloft and protect it from the Demon King But also, the Hero will be reborn, to witness Hyrule going on because of his efforts and be finally praised for it And also, the Hero will seek and find Hylia, throw himself at her service every time, but this time he will be rewarded with love and care, knowing deep inside Hylia loves him back. The end result is the same: Hylia planned Link's life, every single Link's life, but in her eyes she's redeeming herself giving Link the love he lacked the first time

Not a huge fan of overly heavy deconstruction. She has some elements of that, but it all seems like they're both as much slaves to fate and duty as anything else. I never got the feeling she *didn't* love the protohero, just that she had a love for and duty to all her subjects. Basically I don't think Hylia herself felt any better about it than Zelda did, possibly worse.

Zelda is Hylia, she did what she had to do as a Goddess to save the world and she literally gave up her divine being to save the world, she just learned and got other feelings too that she didn't expect when she turned human, she loved the one she had chosen to save the world and for whom she had deviced a plan as the Goddess so that he would do it and achieve it and reach the end, she did all that as a Goddess with her divinity, her divine mind and thinking, she wanted to save the world and its people, HER people, it's even stated in the game, she is still noble and amazing, she would be the personification of goodness and nobility in the game, that's why Link and Zelda exist and are very closely related to her in the first place and are the counterpart of evil and who have to face it and vanquish it, they clearly have a golden and pure heart, like the Goddess, she just had to do what she had to do as a Goddess to save the world and her people, some sacrifices were necessary and she sacrificed herself and her divinity without a doubt and she also needed her hero who had an unbreakable will to help her at her side, who was already with her as her hero when she was Hylia, she knew that he would do everything for her, that he would do everything for Zelda, who was her, Zelda is still Hylia, but she learned and felt many things as a human, she really got to care for and even love Link romantically, which isn't to say that she didn't care for him before, she did, and he was already her chosen hero before, the Goddess who is Zelda herself just having taken a mortal form, who was reborn in Zelda's body was his childhood friend, she considered him a close friend and even fell in love with him, the same Goddess that made those choices, so she regretted some choices that she had to make in order to save the world, Hylia in a mortal body, in Zelda's body which she had taken the form of regretted it, but as a Goddess, as the protector, she had to do and make what was truly for the greater good, what would save the world and her people

Hyrule Historia claim that's the point: in their very first lives, Goddess Hylia and the Hero of Skyloft, Hylia already got her martyr. She puppetereed the entire life of the Hero to break him over and over and make him stronger and more heroic, because "A Goddess' sword must be broken and reforged by human hands to become actually stronger", but seeing him die for her made her regret that. She ended up giving Link a series of lives in which she'll not break, but support Link, and Link won't be battered and broken, but loved. What terrifies the part of Hylia that still lives with Zelda is, again, a world in which Link gives his life for her, throwing away every bit of love and happiness.

i mean link would absolutely die for her any day of the year in skyward sword. Not because he's some kind of hero but because he's a nice dude who cares for his childhood friend. He is lazy and oversleeps every day but in the end he gets the job done and he saves everyone. I love skyward sword. Many people didn't for reasons that are both valid and understandable. But both link and zelda have personalities that are refreshing for zelda games. The other example i have of this is in phantom hourglass where tetra is zelda, but she's still a pirate with a lot of attitude. BOTW is also pretty cool with all the backstory of zelda and link knowing who they are and what's gonna happen even if they don't know how and when. I think Link has an heroic spirit and he would have gone and saved the world if things came down to it. I think Zelda/Hylia gambled on Link's affection towards her being enough motivation for him to do all heroics. Fi herself admits she had a whole set of arguments planned if Zelda's safety wasn't enough for Link to jump into action. So, maybe unpopular, but I think Hylia choose the path with less casualties. Only Link and she would need to face darkness as people in Skyloft were safe and sound.

@@tarnw3301 Add the fact that most Link are orphans too. Like, most of them, we don't even know their family. The only one we know are, in a link to the past (I think) he had an uncle, in Wind Waker he has his sister and grandma, but they are the only relatives he actually grew up with. Sure, in a flashback for breath of the wild, Link's father is mentionned to be a knight, but we don't know if Link knew his father and his mother is never mentionned, so she could have died after the birth of his (scrapped) little sister. Some have parent like figures : The great Deku tree (Ocarine of time), Zelda's father (for Skyward Sword)... but actual relatives ? In most games, there are none. The thing that’s interesting about the legend of Zelda is that link isn’t the hero. Zelda is. He’s the guy in love with the hero. He inserted himself into the story because he fell in love with the chosen one. And because of that as long as Zelda continues to exist Link will follow through every life. She did, though I don’t believe Hylia enjoyed the fact. She was benevolent, and sacrificed everything to bring an end to Demise; she couldn’t use the Triforce herself, so she absolutely needed to make someone capable of doing so. It was a necessary evil, and Hylia probably just felt even worse than she did before after living a human life alongside the person she thrust the fate of the world onto.

When I first played Skyward Sword, I realized about this. This Zelda acted so different from the others when her duty was revealed to her by Impa. If you look at the Zelda from other games like OoT, she keeps her whole personality all the time, even though there is a role she must fulfill. And now with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom we can really see that Zelda is Zelda. It feels like the only remains of the goddess in Zelda's soul are her powers.

When you look in the water in those Trials from the First Person point of view your reflection is the TriForce, and The Temple where you get it before the Wish has 3 trials of Spirit that allow you into the part of his Spirit where those were sealed. Though that just ads to the issue that Zelda is thinking about, Would she have been drawn to him even before getting the Memories if he wasn't literally set up to grow into a Hero protecting it? Did he ever have a choice in falling for her? What about him and his life were planned by the Goddess who controls Time? How / Why would that Goddess Chose him and Why reincarnate at the same time if he was meant to be trusted to protect it? So many fun questions from that Game :)

I knew the Gods were wicked ever since Twilight Princess and then retroactively since Ocarina of Time. Now, I'm not talking about their treatment of the Twili. It was harsh, sure, but their crimes were incredibly severe, they were a massive threat to all life and the Realm of Twilight, if quite bleak, let them develope their own society and culture with seeningly no major deficites. What I meant was blessing Ganondorf, blessing the vessel for Demise's hatred, with the Tri-Force of Power. They were willing to empower Ganondorf, let him ravage across first the Realm of Twilight and then Hylia, leaving untold terror and carnage in his wake, just so they could better control him, make the story play out in a way that best favours them. The Sages could have ended him then and there but then another would have been born and while he would surely be just as wrathful and megalomaniacal, his exact steps would be unknown. But throw him a bait, lure him towards the champion and his guide in search of the remainibg Tri-Force and they will defeat him like they always have and always will. In an eternal battle, they chose attrition to ensure stalemate.

The sages mistook Ganondorf getting the triforce of power as a divine prank from the gods. But it was actually Zelda and the Hero of Time themselves who accidentally gave the triforce to Ganondorf. When Link returned back in time with his triforce of courage still in hand before the triforce was supposed to be split. It created a time paradox that caused the triforce to split even if no one touched it. And just like it did when Ganondorf tried to take the triforce in the Adult timeline the other two pieces went to seek the people who represent them the best. And as evil as Ganondorf is, there is no one else that best represent power.

@@voidjockey82 A lot of lore of Zelda is told through environmental storytelling. So I can't really point to a specific source but I can point to the clues that lead the fanbase to this conclusion. Firstly we can clearly see the triforce of courage still on Link's hand at the end of Ocarina of Time when he meet Zelda for the "first" time once again. This probably gave his words a lot of weight when he warned the Royal Family of what Ganondorf was about to do despite being a kid. Secondly despite that first fact we can still collect the triforce of courage shards in Wind Waker that the Hero of Time supposedly left behind when he went back in time. What we think actually happened is that when the new timeline detected a second triforce of courage out of nowhere it split in pieces. The triforce of wisdom went to Zelda, power went to Ganondorf and the remaining second piece of courage was warped to the Adult timeline. It make sense that such a failsafe would be put in place since as we have seen with Lorule. A world created by the three goddesses cannot survive without the triforce. If you want more details NintendoBlackCrisis did a pretty good job covering the theory in a video called Why Ganondorf Execution Failed In Twilight Princess.

Except the Golden Goddesses never chose Ganondorf? Like... all of this hinges on the idea that Ganondorf was _Chosen._ He very much was not chosen in any game. Any time he has the Triforce of Power, it's because the Triforce split itself as a failsafe and gravitated towards the person in the land who best embodied that trait. You could call the Golden Goddesses neglectful given that they really did leave the world after making it, with only their Oracles acting in their stead. But never once have they willfully empowered Ganon or Ganondorf.

1) Link doesn’t reincarnate. Now, each Link is an incarnation of the soul of the hero, but there’s no strings attached to previous incarnations. They embody the altruism and unbreakable will, but The Hero Of The Sky is not born in an endless cycle. That’d be really messed up if that were the case. 2) Yes, Zelda is Hylia at the same time, but that doesn’t mean she can’t feel… weird about it. It is quite literally a different life than the one she’s living now, so though she may be technically the same person, and remember her past life, it’d still really mess with her sense of self.

She isnt powerful enough to destroy a Master Demon like Demise, so it's logical that she needs to do such steps to do so... And taking These stels, this is something what makes us (and what makes even a goddess like) Human

I mean, for all we know the goddesses are just playing a game: Nayru becoming Zelda to discover what being human (or hilyan?) was, just out of curiosity, Din empowering Ganon ( forcing the reincarnation if the Herald of Death) just to create a monster, a bad guy, for her sisters to defeat, without thinking what each reincarnation actually wanted, Farore and her endless supply of martyrs, each Link forced into a terrible life that will ask too much from him, leaving deep scars thay will never heal (One example being BOTW and how Link lost Mipha, or Ocarina of Time (and Majora's Mask) where Nayru literally forced Link to be an outcast by sending him back in time, Twilight Princess (enough said), etc, etc, etc). The Golden Goddesses aren't particularly good, they just want a story to unfold, and they will destroy the lifes of countless Links, Zeldas and Ganons, to get it.

Except we learned from the tales that the Golden Goddesses left the land of Hyrule with the Triforce marking their original point of exit. Ganon, and by extension Ganondwarf, is the Hatred of Demise reincarnated into a physical form. Hylia, supposedly the goddess of time and the guardian of the Triforce, becomes Zelda, while Link is someone born with the spirit of the hero.

The Golden Godesses aren't them nor the triforce nor did they themselves consciously chose any of the bad that happened, only the Goddess Hylia became Zelda by choice leaving her divine form behind willigly to be able to save the world in Skyward Sword, the triforce was just created by the Golden Goddesses as a heritage of them to the earth they created and for the mortals in it with their almighty power and thus fueled by it and it is bound to fulfill the wish of whoever gets it, that's why the Golden Goddesses knowing this put Hylia as its protector and gurdian, to keep it from evil's hold

@@doloresgronenberg5882 If the Goddesses wanted to keep her power from evil, even having Hylia as a protector, why is the triforce of power (the most powerful triforce, the one imbued with the essence of Din, the one that makes his wearer inmortal, invulnerable to all weapons except the master sword, gives extreme physical and magical capabilities, etc, etc, etc) fated to Ganon? Y'know Ganondorf the literal reincarnation of *THE GOD OF DEATH AND EVIL?* Why would one of the Goddesses (the most powerful of them all) empower him?
@ezronco.8671
@ezronco.8671 Жыл бұрын
@@hasturthekinginyellow5003 the godesses don't really control the triforce they just gave it some rules to follow and left it behind. Ganondorf has the triforce of power because he exhibits the traits befitting of the triforce of power even if he is evil just like how link has courage and zelda has wisdom. The goddesses have been shown to be neglectful at times which end up biting them in the ass. Also majority of the time it wasn't given to him he usually steals it for himself.

I still think of Hylia and Zelda as different people who have made their own choices. While Zelda may hold the Triforce, which makes her closer to Hylia in some regards, Zelda is not to blame for Hylia’s actions. She is her own being and she says so. Still her father’s daughter and still Link’s Zelda. She is her own person, regardless of what someone else’s plans made Hylia’s actions seem like hers.

Manipulation, or a path to victory? How can you know how your plan will succeed in the years to come? You lay the way forward for the future, your children. The gods left Hyrule, entrusting the realm to its current inhabitants to guard and keep safe. They have the free will to live as they please, but also the responsibility to fight those that threaten it. You can claim to be used, you could have walked away, let some other sap be the foolish hero, but YOU still chose to walk that path so close to oblivion. And you do so courageously.

Warning!!: Extremely long message. If you read it all, thankyou so much!! If not, i dont blame you Okay, not gonna lie, i hate this. Not because it isn't good, because it is, i just dont like how it takes one of my favorite Zeldas and turns her into something else. If this was like a different story that wasnt a game already then i would have loved it. So here is how i would have done this: Leave Skyward Sword alone because the game itself doesnt display a Zelda and Link that fits this. The closest Zelda and Link we have that could be used like this is the Link from Hyrule and Zelda from Lowrule, thus we should create our own story. We could keep the origin story of Skyward Sword. The goddess Hylia is being pushed back against demise. Hylia sees legion after legion of her subjects charge into battle to meet a doomed fate. Battle after battle, loss after loss, Hylia is losing troops, power, options, and territory. There is only one soldier that is always willing to fight for her, but it's the one soldier she doesnt want to let go. Finally, she is completely out of options, she needs a hero, and she knows who it is. A heart all too willing to die for his queen. Unwilling to see him die, she goes off instead to try and hold off the impeding darkness. During a skurmish, she gets wounded and tries to fall back. She sees the last remnants of Hylians gathered around the triforce left behind by her predecessors Din, Farore, and Nayru. With the power of Din, she rips the ground and gives the Hylians a sactuary in the sky. With the power of Farore, she fills the skybound paradise with everything it needs to sustain life, and lastly, she uses the power of Nayru to do what she so desperately wanted to avoid but inevitably knew needed to happen. She binds the soldier to a perpetual loop that swears his soul to her service. Before her incantation was complete, mosters surround her. In fear and desperation, she calls out her warrior's name. Her emotions infuse with the magic, causing a fork of reality. Her knight wasn't far and before she knew it, his warrior's cry filled the air as he plunged himself from the land she created to keep him safe. In a furious rage, he crushes the monsters without mercy. It was clear, her emotions twisted the spell and caused him to go berserk. An ominous dark aura started to form around him. Before her eyes, this loyal knight who had a gentle spirit was being twisted into a knew form of darkness. Hylia had a little strength left, she used the last of it to forge a sword that would seal away evil, including that which plagued the her knight. The sword was complete, but she was overcome with exhaustion. Still, she needed to stop the rampage. Dragging the newly fromed blade behind her, she clawed her way over the corpses of fallen monsters. She called out on more time, and her knight paused and turned to her. The blade shown a bight light that periced through him, seperating the evil energy from him. Both collapsed and strugfled back to their feet. Hylia placed the blade before the knight and as soon as he touched it, a flash of gold and blew caused time around her to freeze. The voices of the three goddesses called out to her; Nayru: "Your emotions have caused a deep curse on the one you love." Din: "A curse that ways on you as well." Farore: "A cycle never to end and never to fade." All three: "To love and be loved, or the safety of your people. Which will you choose dear child?" Hylia: "I.. I dont know..." Farore: "Then I shall choose for you. Your soul bound to his. Forever together, forever apart. Both will die, both will be reborn. Each life anew, each one a clean slate. You shall love him and he you, but you shall bear the weight of your guilt and will be burdened with knowing his fate will always be death by the sword." Hylia: "This is far greater than I can bare! Please, there must be something you can do!" The triforce split into three and two flew up to the land in the sky, but one remained. Din: "Your spell still needs to be completed. I shall do this for you. It will be as Farore said, your fates will be intertwined, but you shall always be given a chance for eachother. But this shall come with a cost. A third power will follow you, one whom will seek to destroy you both. Each life you have together this evil shall be reborn. Be warned, this evil may threaten the very ones you wish to protect. Deaths will happen and it will all weigh on you. Will you bare this burden?" Hylia turned to her knight with the sword in hand. "As long as he is with me, I can bare it." Din: "Thus it shall be. You will never have him so long as this evil remains. Until the evil is vanquished, you will be bound by duty to protect the people of Hyrule above all else. Once the evil is vanquished, then you shall be free." This is long but i think it creates this dilemma you portrayed so perfectly. I am not a good writer but i feel like this creates a new world of Zelda that demands Zelda to lock her emotions away and demands that Link never stops chasing her. We can wven see tragedies where Zelda dies, or as you showed, Link dies. We can even see that there will be times where Link is overcome by the spell of Hylia that caused him to go berserk and Zelda will have to use the sword made for Link against him.

An idea I had for a story was pretty much a male gerudo (because I don't think anyone said there could only be one MALE gerudo at a time) joins the hero in return for his freedom because he is believedto be a threat. After fighting to sperate himself from his ancestor, he dies by willingly giving up his life to allow a damaged mastersword to control the malice to repair the sword as well as heal link whenever the blade bites into a creature of malice.

At the risk of ruining the mood, this is why I just really did not like Zelda in Skyward Sword. Manipulating Link the whole time was just cruel and unneeded, she could have like left him a note at some point explaining things, he's still 100% do all he could to save her in the end. The whole staying silent plot was nothing but cruel.
