As someone who normally doesn't play a whole lotta fighting games, save for the TMNT arcade cabinet all two times I've ever seen it in the wild (which isn't the same, I get that), I have to say I've never had so much fun with a fighting game as I have with Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost ON. Got it for myself and a friend, relatively new Gundam fans, way back when it first went 50% off, and I got us both the Barbatos Lupus Rex DLC too. It may never have as much cultural impact as Street Fighter (esp. SF2 and its 13.7 billion versions), Mortal Kombat, or any of the other ones from back then; but there's something about EXVS MBON that just... clicks with me. Something _beyond_ the giant robots. And now that I've had the time to watch the whole video, I understand what it is now; it's the fact that the game gives incredible combat and combo potential without requiring that I perform a bunch of excessively-complicated and inhuman combos; it's extremely accommodating to newcomers, and it takes only learning how to use cancels and chains properly, not performing literally the most counterintuitive actions that have ever existed on a joystick and six buttons, to reach your full potential, still offering great depth in its mechanics without asking you to sacrifice ever making human contact again. And if I wasn't already hooked on MBON, this video alone certified that I'm sticking with the $70-80 I sunk in total, and I'm gonna go all the distance to learn this game from top to bottom, come hell or high water. Excellent video, absolutely earned a subscription from me.

It's a console-only offshoot, created to both introduce the series to western players as well as recoup the development costs of the engine created for the game, which went on to power EXVS2, the current arcade iteration. With that said, most players (myself included) consider MBON to be vastly superior. Having years worth of arcade playtesting really helps the game when it hits consoles.

Just occurred to me that this game basically took the Budokai Tenkaichi arena structure and relatively simple moveset, and beefed it up and perfected it for online team-based PvP. As someone who has never been crazy about 2D fighters but absolutely LOVED the Tenkaichi games, this game just keeps sounding better. Love that it's accessible yet high skillcap. Been eyeing this game for like a year due mostly to this video, but didn't wanna pay full price. It's now on sale for $20, so I'm gonna grab it. I'm excited. Great video.

Technically, this franchise predates the DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi series. The very first game in this particular genetic lineage was Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation Vs. Zeon, originally released in 2001. Every game released since then has been an iterative improvement upon that original base. The EXVS series that spawned this particular game began in 2010.

It's still going pretty strong. Gundam Versus was the first worldwide release of the series in what is considered the online era, and that game was practically dead a year after launch. MBON has multiple packed Player Match lobbies every night, and this has been the case for 18 months. In fact, I started a PSN account just to host a Player Match lobby 24/7 on one of my PS4s. Okay, lots of questions, let's see if I can help you here: **Still curious if/how/when/where tournaments were/are held.** This version has a LAN mode for local system link play, specifically for hosting tournament events. Online, there are official Sony-backed ESL tournaments, and these are accessible through the online match menu. **Does this game have rollback netcode?** No. While I wish it did, it would be incredibly hard to implement, because there are four simultaneous players to consider, and due to the open nature of the playfield, projectile tracking, etc., there's a lot of math and frame data to keep 1:1 with four concurrent sessions. Creating a rollback solution for that would be unholy summoning levels of impressive. And scary. **How many characters are there?** There's 185 suits available to you the moment you fire the game up. All of them have their own utility, toolsets, and general gameplan. **Do combo routes change based on victim (bigger vs smaller hurtboxes, etc.)?** I'm sure they could, but I have never personally witnessed it. What hits one suit is usually guaranteed to hit every other suit the same way, and since all suits have universal dodge mechanics, they will usually avoid them using the same tools...but not always. Single-player mode boss stages have big enemies that are far easier to guarantee hits on, but they also have far more powerful weapons / larger health / hit hella hard. **How long do matches take? Is there a Timer?** The timer is 240 seconds. I, personally, have never won or lost a match due to the clock running out. **Why have I literally never heard of this game before?** Because until Gundam Versus in 2017, the EXVS franchise was import-only on consoles. **How did you hear of/ get started in this game?** A friend introduced me to it in the PS3 era, with Gundam EXVS Full Boost. He knew I liked an old arcade game called Virtual ON, and said if I liked that, I'd probably like this. He was right. **30 years holy smokes, what's your story?** It's long. Probably deserves its own video. Just know that my first "I must practice to get stronger" FG experience was on SF2 cabs in a skating rink, circa 1991. **How long has this specific version of the game been out and is there a new installment on the horizon?** This version has been in arcades since 2016, and all of the roster additions, balance updates, revisions, etc. have been baked into this console version. The current installment is EXVS2 XBOOST (crossboost), which is actually two iterations ahead of this game. It's only in Asian arcades, and probably won't be headed to consoles until at least 2023. **Does this game get patches?** It gets updates, new modes, new slight tweaks to better the online environment, but nothing really in terms of balance updates. After four years of dominating arcades and collecting data for the developers, all of the balance updates that are currently in the game have been created and tested well before the console version was released. This version is largely seen as the "stable" competitive balance. - - - Hope this helped!

This game is wild in the sense that the sense pick-up-and-play ease is so strong, but the longer you remain playing it and the more you learn about it (cough cough gundamguide.com), the level of tactical depth available to you as a player becomes so unimaginably massive. Unfortunately, that won’t happen. Not a fan of FPS games, for the most part. Gundam Evolution does absolutely nothing for me.

@@keo_bas The thing to realize is that ranged tactics are far better for survivability than melee tactics are, as they are inherently less risky. Branch out and try some suits that are more distance-based, and you'll see what I mean.

What's wild to me is how having to deal with two potential incoming firing lines not only influences how you attack enemies, but how you move in order to avoid those attacks, but also your positioning in order to ensure your attacks have a higher chance to hit, AS WELL AS keeping your opponents in visual confirmation as to not get nailed from behind.
